is there a way to rate insecticides that is less detrimental to human and environmental health
Plant protection is essential for providing high-quality food in adequate quantities. However, the use of insecticides often induces adverse effects on environment and human health. The Agency for the Environmental Protection of Tuscany (Italy) arranges pesticide ingredients in five classes basing on their impact on human health. We classified the pesticide treatments carried out by 48 winegrowers of the Veneto Region (Italy) in relation to the active ingredients contained into the used pesticides over a three-year period (2015–2017). It was found that the cost of insecticides and their class of impact were related, and that the cost's pressure led farmers to favor insecticides with active ingredients having a high negative impact on human health. The same active ingredients are used worldwide. We propose to implement taxation measures and subsidies to deter the use of the most harmful insecticides. X-ray redshifts for obscured AGN: a case study in the J1030 deep field
We present a procedure to constrain the redshifts of obscured ( cm) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) based on low-count statistics
X-ray spectra, which can be adopted when photometric and/or spectroscopic
redshifts are unavailable or difficult to obtain. We selected a sample of 54
obscured AGN candidates on the basis of their X-ray hardness ratio, ,
in the Chandra deep field (479 ks, 335 arcmin) around the QSO
SDSS J1030+0524. The sample has a median value of net counts in the
0.5-7 keV energy band. We estimate reliable X-ray redshift solutions taking
advantage of the main features in obscured AGN spectra, like the Fe 6.4 keV
K emission line, the 7.1 keV Fe absorption edge and the
photoelectric absorption cut-off. The significance of such features is
investigated through spectral simulations, and the derived X-ray redshift
solutions are then compared with photometric redshifts. Both photometric and
X-ray redshifts are derived for 33 sources. When multiple solutions are derived
by any method, we find that combining the redshift solutions of the two
techniques improves the rms by a factor of two. Using our redshift estimates
(), we derived absorbing column densities in the
range cm and absorption-corrected, 2-10 keV
rest-frame luminosities between and erg s, with
median values of cm and erg s, respectively. Our results suggest that
the adopted procedure can be applied to current and future X-ray surveys, for
sources detected only in the X-rays or that have uncertain photometric or
single-line spectroscopic redshifts.Comment: 22 pages, 18 figure
LBT-MODS spectroscopy of high-redshift candidates in the Chandra J1030 field. A newly discovered z2.8 large scale structure
We present the results of a spectroscopic campaign with the Multi-Object
Double Spectrograph (MODS) instrument mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope
(LBT), aimed at obtaining a spectroscopic redshift for seven Chandra J1030
sources with a photometric redshift >=2.7 and optical magnitude
r_AB=[24.5-26.5]. We obtained a spectroscopic redshift for five out of seven
targets: all of them have z_spec>=2.5, thus probing the reliability of the
Chandra J1030 photometric redshifts. The spectroscopic campaign led to the
serendipitous discovery of a z~2.78 large scale structure (LSS) in the J1030
field: the structure contains four X-ray sources (three of which were targeted
in the LBT-MODS campaign) and two non-X-ray detected galaxies for which a
VLT-MUSE spectrum was already available. The X-ray members of the LSS are
hosted in galaxies that are significantly more massive
(log(M_*/M_sun)=[10.0-11.1]) than those hosting the two MUSE-detected sources
(log(M_*/M_sun)<10). Both observations and simulations show that massive
galaxies, and particularly objects having log(M_*/M_sun)>10, are among the best
tracers of large scale structures and filaments in the cosmic web.
Consequently, our result can explain why X-ray-detected AGN have also been
shown to be efficient tracers of large scale structures.Comment: 16 pages, 9 Figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomy and

The quasar-galaxy cross SDSS J1320+1644: A probable large-separation lensed quasar
We report the discovery of a pair of quasars at , with a separation
of 8\farcs585\pm0\farcs002. Subaru Telescope infrared imaging reveals the
presence of an elliptical and a disk-like galaxy located almost symmetrically
between the quasars, creating a cross-like configuration. Based on absorption
lines in the quasar spectra and the colors of the galaxies, we estimate that
both galaxies are located at redshift . This, as well as the
similarity of the quasar spectra, suggests that the system is a single quasar
multiply imaged by a galaxy group or cluster acting as a gravitational lens,
although the possibility of a binary quasar cannot be fully excluded. We show
that the gravitational lensing hypothesis implies these galaxies are not
isolated, but must be embedded in a dark matter halo of virial mass assuming an NFW model with a
concentration parameter of , or a singular isothermal sphere profile
with a velocity dispersion of km s. We place constraints on
the location of the dark matter halo, as well as the velocity dispersions of
the galaxies. In addition, we discuss the influence of differential reddening,
microlensing and intrinsic variability on the quasar spectra and broadband
photometry.Comment: Published in The Astrophysical Journa
SDSS J133401.39+331534.3: A New Subarcsecond Gravitationally Lensed Quasar
The quasar SDSS J133401.39+331534.3 at z = 2.426 is found to be a two-image
gravitationally lensed quasar with the image separation of 0.833. The object is
first identified as a lensed quasar candidate in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Quasar Lens Search, and then confirmed as a lensed system from follow-up
observations at the Subaru and University of Hawaii 2.2-meter telescopes. We
estimate the redshift of the lensing galaxy to be 0.557 based on absorption
lines in the quasar spectra as well as the color of the galaxy. In particular,
we observe the system with the Subaru Telescope AO188 adaptive optics with
laser guide star, in order to derive accurate astrometry, which well
demonstrates the usefulness of the laser guide star adaptive optics imaging for
studying strong lens systems. Our mass modeling with improved astrometry
implies that a nearby bright galaxy apart from the lensing galaxy is
likely to affect the lens potential.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures. ApJ, in pres
Redshift identification of X-ray selected active galactic nuclei in the J1030 field: searching for large-scale structures and high-redshift sources
We publicly release the spectroscopic and photometric redshift catalog of the
sources detected with Chandra in the field of the =6.3 quasar SDSS
J1030+0525. This is currently the fifth deepest X-ray field, and reaches a
0.5-2 keV flux limit =610 erg s
cm. By using two independent methods, we measure a photometric redshift
for 243 objects, while 123 (51%) sources also have a spectroscopic redshift,
110 of which coming from an INAF-Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) Strategic
Program. We use the spectroscopic redshifts to determine the quality of the
photometric ones, and find it in agreement with that of other X-ray surveys
which used a similar number of photometric data-points. In particular, we
measure a sample normalized median absolute deviation
=1.48||-||/(1+)=0.065. We use
these new spectroscopic and photometric redshifts to study the properties of
the Chandra J1030 field. We observe several peaks in our spectroscopic redshift
distribution between =0.15 and =1.5, and find that the sources in each
peak are often distributed across the whole Chandra field of view. This
evidence confirms that X-ray selected AGN can efficiently track large-scale
structures over physical scales of several Mpc. Finally, we computed the
Chandra J1030 3 number counts: while the spectroscopic completeness at
high-redshift of our sample is limited, our results point towards a potential
source excess at 4, which we plan to either confirm or reject in the
near future with dedicated spectroscopic campaigns
The production of electrical energy in Veneto is currently characterized by a high dependence on conventional resources such as coal and natural gas. Recent European regulations have set new national targets for the production of electricity from renewable sources by 2020. In addition, the EU has placed a declining cap on CO2 emissions for large plants.
What level of renewable energy production is realistic for the Veneto region to achieve? What different technologies will be utilized in realizing this level? What degree of subsidy will be necessary to achieve goals set by the European Union?
To answer these questions, we built VES (Veneto Electricity Simulator), a system dynamics model that can be used to analyse the complex systems in the electricity sector, which are characterized by many interacting variables such as production, energy mix, and the external effects of such activities.
In this paper, we discuss the use of VES to examine the expenditures and the externalities associated with 1) the proposed changes in one of the EU renewable energy production subsidies and 2) possible changes in the market price of CO2 emissions.
