    Explosion reactivity characterisation of pulverised torrefied spruce wood

    Wood and other agricultural powders have been recognised as hazardous for a long time. These kinds of materials are also now being used for power generation in 100% biomass plants or mixed with coal as a way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, safety data for biomass is very scarce in the literature, and non-existent for upgraded biomass products such as torrefied biomass, largely due to the challenges that biomass poses for explosion characterisation in the standard methods (1m3 ISO vessel or 20L sphere). The Leeds group has developed and calibrated new systems for the 1m3 ISO vessel that overcome such challenges and thus, this work presents the first data available in the literature for torrefied biomass explosion characteristics, results for untreated Norway spruce wood and Kellingley coal are included for comparison. Also flame speeds and post-explosion residue analysis results are presented. Results showed that torrefied spruce wood was more reactive than Kellingley coal and slightly more reactive than its parent material in terms of Kst, Pmax and flame speed. The differences between coal and biomass samples highlight that it should not be assumed that safety systems for coal can be applied to torrefied or raw wood materials, without suitable modifications

    Flame Propagation of Pulverised Biomass Crop Residues and their Explosion Characteristics

    Pulverised agricultural crop residues were investigated using the ISO 1 m3 turbulent explosion vessel. This was modified to enable the spherical flame propagation flame speed and the heat release rate in MW/m2 to be determined. From the turbulent flame speed, the laminar flame speed and laminar burning velocity and global heat release, MW/m2, were determined. In addition the equipment was used to determine the biomass explosibility, Kst (= dP/dtmaxV1/3), and the minimum explosion concentration (MEC). Two Pakistani crop residues bagasse (B) and wheat straw (WS) were investigated. Particle size distribution, elemental and proximate analysis and surface morphology for the raw powders and for their post explosion residues were carried out. It was found that these crop residues have explosibility characteristics comparable to wood biomass powders. MEC values as low as equivalence ratios of 0.18 to 0.3 were found which were lower than for gaseous hydrocarbons, but similar to other measurements for biomass using the Hartmann explosibility equipment. Peak turbulent flame speeds were measured at 3-4 m/s. There was a significant post explosion residue of unburned material which was shown to have an increase in char content relative to the raw biomass, while the volatile content was reduced. The BET surface area of the post explosion residue of bagasse was higher than that of the wheat straw residue, showing a higher release of volatiles for bagasse with a more porous char residue in the burnout indicating higher reactivity. These crop residues are a viable renewable fuel for existing coal power plants or as a basis for a new generation of small scale steam power generators in Pakistan

    Biomass Explosion Residue Analysis

    On account of its greenhouse gas advantages there is increasing use of pulverized biomass in power generation. However, there is little information on the combustion properties of pulverized biomass and on the explosion hazards they create in the mills, dust conveyor systems and biomass storage silos. This work uses the ISO 1 m3 dust explosion equipment to study the explosion properties and combustion characteristics of pulverized biomass dust clouds. An unreported feature of this apparatus is that in rich concentrations only about half the dust injected is burned in the explosion. This work was undertaken to try to understand, through measuring the mass and composition of the debris at the end of the explosion, why all the pulverized biomass injected did not burn and the consequences for the measured parameters of flame speed, Pmax and Kst. One possible explanation of the results is that the residue material was formed from biomass dust blown ahead of the flame by the explosion induced wind and deposited on the vessel wall, where it was compressed as the pressure increased in the vessel. The flame side underwent flame impingement pyrolysis and the metal side was heated and compressed in the explosion but not burned. This was supported by photographic and pressure decay data that indicated the presence of a “cake” of dust being formed on the wall of the vessel. The results also show that the overpressures remain high for very rich equivalence ratios of up to 6. The reactivity of biomass was higher than coal for the two types of biomass investigated. No rich combustion limit was found. This challenges the general industry assumption that operating in very rich conditions in mills is safe. An explanation is proposed for the high peak pressures under rich conditions

    Explosion characteristics of pulverised Colombian coal, pine wood and their mixtures

    Co-firing of coal and biomass is a readily implementable, cost effective option of introducing biomass into the European power generation capability. Pulverised coal and biomass can be blended in various proportions and used as fuels in co-firing plants with a subsequent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Coal powders have well known explosion hazards and the explosion characteristics for many coals are available in the literature [1], however, data for biomass explosibility are scarcer due to some characteristics of biomass that prevent their characterisation using the existing standard methods [2]. The explosibility of coal/biomass blends is also unknown. The aim of the present work is to provide explosion characteristics and combustion properties such as flame speeds and burning velocities of coal and biomass blends and compare their reactivity to that of coal and biomass alone

    Monophasic synovial sarcoma presenting as a primary ileal mass: a case report and review of the literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Synovial sarcoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor mainly arising in the peri-articular tissue in young adults. There are few cases reported in other areas.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 29-year-old Saudi woman of Arabian ethnicity with synovial sarcoma arising primarily from the ileum who presented with abdominal pain, a palpable mass and incomplete intestinal obstruction. A literature review was performed to gather information on this rare gastrointestinal tract sarcoma.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although it is a rare tumor of the pre-articular tissues, synovial sarcoma can present, in exceedingly rare cases, in unusual anatomical sites such as the gastrointestinal tract. We believe the reporting of all rare or unexpected presentations of sarcoma will eventually improve our understanding of this relatively unusual malignancy.</p

    Hemolytic uremic syndrome following the infusion of oxaliplatin: case report

    BACKGROUND: Oxaliplatin is a platinum derivative, which is used in the treatment of colorectal cancer. A small number of oxaliplatin-related hemolytic and/or thrombocytopenic reactions have been reported. We present a case of hemolytic-uremic syndrome that developed during the 4(th )cycle of combination chemotherapy with oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old-male was administered chemotherapy with oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin for a Duke's stage C colorectal carcinoma. Three cycles of chemotherapy had been administered without complications when, at the beginning of the fourth cycle, the patient developed clinical and laboratory abnormalities consistent with the development of the hemolytic-uremic syndrome. Treatment was discontinued; the patient was managed with monitored IV hydration and loop diuretics, high dose corticosteroids and fresh frozen plasma infusions and recovered completely. CONCLUSION: The hemolytic-uremic syndrome may be a rare complication of oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy. Clinicians need to maintain a high index of suspicion to diagnose and treat this life-threatening adverse event

    Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks, 1990-2015: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015

    SummaryBackground The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 provides an up-to-date synthesis of the evidence for risk factor exposure and the attributable burden of disease. By providing national and subnational assessments spanning the past 25 years, this study can inform debates on the importance of addressing risks in context. Methods We used the comparative risk assessment framework developed for previous iterations of the Global Burden of Disease Study to estimate attributable deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and trends in exposure by age group, sex, year, and geography for 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks from 1990 to 2015. This study included 388 risk-outcome pairs that met World Cancer Research Fund-defined criteria for convincing or probable evidence. We extracted relative risk and exposure estimates from randomised controlled trials, cohorts, pooled cohorts, household surveys, census data, satellite data, and other sources. We used statistical models to pool data, adjust for bias, and incorporate covariates. We developed a metric that allows comparisons of exposure across risk factors—the summary exposure value. Using the counterfactual scenario of theoretical minimum risk level, we estimated the portion of deaths and DALYs that could be attributed to a given risk. We decomposed trends in attributable burden into contributions from population growth, population age structure, risk exposure, and risk-deleted cause-specific DALY rates. We characterised risk exposure in relation to a Socio-demographic Index (SDI). Findings Between 1990 and 2015, global exposure to unsafe sanitation, household air pollution, childhood underweight, childhood stunting, and smoking each decreased by more than 25%. Global exposure for several occupational risks, high body-mass index (BMI), and drug use increased by more than 25% over the same period. All risks jointly evaluated in 2015 accounted for 57·8% (95% CI 56·6–58·8) of global deaths and 41·2% (39·8–42·8) of DALYs. In 2015, the ten largest contributors to global DALYs among Level 3 risks were high systolic blood pressure (211·8 million [192·7 million to 231·1 million] global DALYs), smoking (148·6 million [134·2 million to 163·1 million]), high fasting plasma glucose (143·1 million [125·1 million to 163·5 million]), high BMI (120·1 million [83·8 million to 158·4 million]), childhood undernutrition (113·3 million [103·9 million to 123·4 million]), ambient particulate matter (103·1 million [90·8 million to 115·1 million]), high total cholesterol (88·7 million [74·6 million to 105·7 million]), household air pollution (85·6 million [66·7 million to 106·1 million]), alcohol use (85·0 million [77·2 million to 93·0 million]), and diets high in sodium (83·0 million [49·3 million to 127·5 million]). From 1990 to 2015, attributable DALYs declined for micronutrient deficiencies, childhood undernutrition, unsafe sanitation and water, and household air pollution; reductions in risk-deleted DALY rates rather than reductions in exposure drove these declines. Rising exposure contributed to notable increases in attributable DALYs from high BMI, high fasting plasma glucose, occupational carcinogens, and drug use. Environmental risks and childhood undernutrition declined steadily with SDI; low physical activity, high BMI, and high fasting plasma glucose increased with SDI. In 119 countries, metabolic risks, such as high BMI and fasting plasma glucose, contributed the most attributable DALYs in 2015. Regionally, smoking still ranked among the leading five risk factors for attributable DALYs in 109 countries; childhood underweight and unsafe sex remained primary drivers of early death and disability in much of sub-Saharan Africa. Interpretation Declines in some key environmental risks have contributed to declines in critical infectious diseases. Some risks appear to be invariant to SDI. Increasing risks, including high BMI, high fasting plasma glucose, drug use, and some occupational exposures, contribute to rising burden from some conditions, but also provide opportunities for intervention. Some highly preventable risks, such as smoking, remain major causes of attributable DALYs, even as exposure is declining.     Potential of Resveratrol Analogues as Antagonists of Osteoclasts and Promoters of Osteoblasts

    The plant phytoalexin resveratrol was previously demonstrated to inhibit the differentiation and bone resorbing activity of osteoclasts, to promote the formation of osteoblasts from mesenchymal precursors in cultures, and inhibit myeloma cell proliferation, when used at high concentrations. In the current study, we screened five structurally modified resveratrol analogues for their ability to modify the differentiation of osteoclasts and osteoblasts and proliferation of myeloma cells. Compared to resveratrol, analogues showed an up to 5,000-fold increased potency to inhibit osteoclast differentiation. To a lesser extent, resveratrol analogues also promoted osteoblast maturation. However, they did not antagonize the proliferation of myeloma cells. The potency of the best-performing candidate in vitro was tested in vivo in an ovariectomy-induced model of osteoporosis, but an effect on bone loss could not be detected. Based on their powerful antiresorptive activity in vitro, resveratrol analogues might be attractive modulators of bone remodeling. However, further studies are required to establish their efficacy in vivo

    Microarray profiling of mononuclear peripheral blood cells identifies novle candidate genes related to chemoradiation response in rectal cancer

    Preoperative chemoradiation significantly improves oncological outcome in locally advanced rectal cancer. However there is no effective method of predicting tumor response to chemoradiation in these patients. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells have emerged recently as pathology markers of cancer and other diseases, making possible their use as therapy predictors. Furthermore, the importance of the immune response in radiosensivity of solid organs led us to hypothesized that microarray gene expression profiling of peripheral blood mononuclear cells could identify patients with response to chemoradiation in rectal cancer. Thirty five 35 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer were recruited initially to perform the study. Peripheral blood samples were obtained before neaodjuvant treatment. RNA was extracted and purified to obtain cDNA and cRNA for hybridization of microarrays included in Human WG CodeLink bioarrays. Quantitative real time PCR was used to validate microarray experiment data. Results were correlated with pathological response, according to Mandard´s criteria and final UICC Stage (patients with tumor regression grade 1–2 and downstaging being defined as responders and patients with grade 3–5 and no downstaging as non-responders). Twenty seven out of 35 patients were finally included in the study. We performed a multiple t-test using Significance Analysis of Microarrays, to find those genes differing significantly in expression, between responders (n = 11) and non-responders (n = 16) to CRT. The differently expressed genes were: BC 035656.1, CIR, PRDM2, CAPG, FALZ, HLA-DPB2, NUPL2, and ZFP36. The measurement of FALZ (p = 0.029) gene expression level determined by qRT-PCR, showed statistically significant differences between the two groups. Gene expression profiling reveals novel genes in peripheral blood samples of mononuclear cells that could predict responders and non-responders to chemoradiation in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. Moreover, our investigation added further evidence to the importance of mononuclear cells’ mediated response in the neoadjuvant treatment of rectal cancer.This investigation was supported by the Fundación Investigación Biomédica Mutua Madrileña.
