    On the Hilbert eigenvariety at exotic and CM classical weight 1 points

    Let FF be a totally real number field and let ff be a classical cuspidal pp-regular Hilbert modular eigenform over FF of parallel weight 11. Let xx be the point on the pp-adic Hilbert eigenvariety E\mathcal E corresponding to an ordinary pp-stabilization of ff. We show that if the pp-adic Schanuel Conjecture is true, then E\mathcal E is smooth at xx if ff has CM. If we additionally assume that F/QF/\mathbb Q is Galois, we show that the weight map is \'etale at xx if ff has either CM or exotic projective image (which is the case for almost all cuspidal Hilbert modular eigenforms of parallel weight 11). We prove these results by showing that the completed local ring of the eigenvariety at xx is isomorphic to a universal nearly ordinary Galois deformation ring.Comment: The material in the introduction and the final sections was reorganized.     Asia-Pacific food markets and trade in 2005: a global, economy-wide perspective

    Rapid industrialization in East Asia, particularly China, is raising questions about who will feed the region in the next century and how Asia will be able to pay for its food imports. The paper ®rst reviews existing food sector projections and then takes an economy-wide perspective using projections to 2005, based on the global CGE model known as GTAP. After showing the impact of implementing the Uruguay Round, the paper explores several alternative scenarios. A slowdown in farm productivity growth is shown to be costly to the world economy, as is slower economic growth in China. Failure to honour Uruguay Round obligations to open textile and clothing markets in OECD countries would reduce East Asia's industrialization and thereby slow its net imports of food. On the other hand, the trade reform that is likely to accompany China's (and hence Taiwan's) member- ship of the World Trade Organization (WTO) adds 30 per cent to estimated global gains from the Uruguay Round. Their WTO accession is projected to boost exports of manufactures and strengthen food import demand by not only China but also its densely populated neighbours with whom it trades intensively.International Relations/Trade,

    Application of cupuassu shell as biosorbent for the removal of textile dyes from aqueous solution

    AbstractThe cupuassu shell (Theobroma grandiflorum) which is a food residue was used in its natural form as biosorbent for the removal of C.I. Reactive Red 194 and C.I. Direct Blue 53 dyes from aqueous solutions. This biosorbent was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption curves. The effects of pH, biosorbent dosage and shaking time on biosorption capacities were studied. In acidic pH region (pH 2.0) the biosorption of the dyes were favorable. The contact time required to obtain the equilibrium was 8 and 18 h at 298 K, for Reactive Red 194 and Direct Blue 53, respectively. The Avrami fractionary-order kinetic model provided the best fit to experimental data compared with pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and chemisorption kinetic adsorption models. The equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips and Radke–Prausnitz isotherm models. For both dyes the equilibrium data were best fitted to the Sips isotherm model

    Reclutamiento de la merluza argentina, Merluccius hubbsi, del stock patagónico: una revisión de las principales características que afectan el potencial reproductivo y la supervivencia durante las primeras etapas de la vida

    Understanding the causes that generate variability of recruitment in marine populations constitutes one of the greatest challenges in fishery science. Our predictive capacity to explain these variations is relatively low, due to the interaction of exogenous and endogenous factors, which vary across time and space within populations. In order to gain information on recruitment fluctuations of the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi) from Patagonian stock, we reviewed the results obtained analyzing the reproductive ecology, trophic and energetic dynamics during different stages of development of this species, and its relationship with environmental variables. We observed that the reproductive potential is strongly influenced by characteristics of the parental stock, particularly females, in terms of their size, age and condition. This feature, called ‘maternal effect’, suggests that the spawning stock biomass, commonly used as an index of productivity in fishery assessment, is a poor predictor of recruitment. We also observed that survival during hake early life is affected by the spatial coincidence with the North Patagonian Frontal System, characterized by a high concentration of nutrients, high productivity, and food availability. Physical conditions and larval density in the nursery area affected the nutritional state and mortality of hake, mainly by competition for food or predation. It was observed that the transition of juveniles from pelagic to demersal habitat occurs over a longer period than previously recognized for this species, stressing the importance of using acoustic information to complement data from bottom trawls. This is one of the main topics to be further developed in order to estimate new recruitment indices for Argentine hake, along with other research items proposed to improve stock assessment.Comprender las causas que generan la variabilidad del reclutamiento en las poblaciones marinas constituye uno de los mayores desafíos de la ciencia pesquera. Nuestra capacidad predictiva para explicar estas variaciones es relativamente baja, debido a la interacción de factores exógenos y endógenos, que varían en el tiempo y el espacio dentro de las poblaciones. Con el fin de obtener información sobre las fluctuaciones en el reclutamiento de la merluza argentina (Merluccius hubbsi) del stock patagónico, revisamos los resultados obtenidos analizando la ecología reproductiva, la dinámica trófica y energética durante las diferentes etapas de desarrollo de esta especie y su relación con variables ambientales. Observamos que el potencial reproductivo está fuertemente influenciado por las características parentales, particularmente de las hembras, en cuanto a su tamaño, edad y condición. Esta característica, denominada “efecto materno”, sugiere que la biomasa de la población reproductora, comúnmente utilizada como índice de productividad en la evaluación de pesquerías, es un predictor deficiente del reclutamiento. También observamos que la supervivencia durante los primeros años de vida de la merluza se ve afectada por la coincidencia espacial con el Sistema Frontal Norpatagónico, caracterizado por una alta concentración de nutrientes, alta productividad y disponibilidad de alimento. Las condiciones físicas y la densidad larvaria en la zona de crianza afectaron el estado nutricional y la mortalidad de la merluza, principalmente por competencia por alimento o depredación. Se observó que la transición del hábitat pelágico al demersal en los juveniles se produce durante un período más extenso que el reconocido anteriormente para esta especie, lo que destaca la importancia de utilizar los registros acústicos para complementar la información de las redes de arrastre de fondo. Este es uno de los principales temas a desarrollar para estimar nuevos índices de reclutamiento de merluza argentina, junto con otras líneas de investigación propuestas para mejorar la evaluación del stock

    Indução de aderência intrabdominal por prótese de retícula de polipropileno:: estudo experimental em ratos

    INTRODUCTION: The correction of groin hernias using a transperitoneal videolaparoscopic method with a polypropylene mesh is becoming increasingly common. This could lead to an increased incidence of adhesion formation.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The incidence of adhesions induced by mesh placement and by reperitonization was observed in 40 male adult Wistar rats, randomlyallocated to four groups of 10 rats (Group A = no mesh, no reperitonization; B = no mesh, reperitonization; C = mesh, no reperitonization; D = mesh and reperitonization). After opening the abdominal cavity, the iliac fossa was identified and a peritoneal opening, measuring about 2 by 2 cm, was done on the parietal wall. In the rats in which a polypropylene prosthesis was used, a piece of Marlex mesh, measuring about 1.5 by 1.5 cm was placed on the peritoneal opening. A simple suture was performed in the animals submitted to reperitonization, using a 5.0 monofilamentar polypropylene thread on a cardiovascular (atraumatic) needle. The animals were killed 15 days after the operation. Macroscopic analysis was done by an investigator blinded to intervention group. Fisher’s exact test and the c2 test were used for statistical analysis of the results. A P < 0.05 was considered as significant.RESULTS: Adhesions were significantly more common in the groups in which the prosthesis was placed (59% vs. 95%; P = 0.01), as well as in the groups in whichreperitonization was performed (58% vs. 100%; P = 0.03).CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that polypropylene mesh placement and reperitonization are each independent factors that have a role in inducing the formationof adhesions.INTRODUÇÃO: A correção de hérnias na virilha através de um método videolaparoscópico transperitoneal está se tornando cada vez mais comum. Contudo,este método poderia levar a um aumento na incidência de formação de aderências.MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: A incidência de aderências induzidas pela colocação de retícula e pela reperitonização foram observadas em 40 ratos Wistar adultos, machos, divididos aleatoriamente em quatro grupos com 10 ratos cada um (Grupo A = sem retícula, sem reperitonização; B = sem retícula, com reperitonização; C = com retícula, sem reperitonização; D = retícula e reperitonização). Após a abertura da cavidade abdominal, a fossa ilíaca foi identificada e fez-se uma abertura de aproximadamente 2 x 2 cm na parede parietal. Nos ratos em que uma prótese de polipropileno foi utilizada, uma retícula Marlex com 1,5 x 1,5 cm foi colocada sobre a abertura peritoneal. Nos outros animais, a reperitonização foi feita com sutura simples, utilizando-se fio de polipropileno monofilamentar 5.0 com uma agulha cardiovascular (atraumática). Os animais foram sacrificados 15 dias depois da operação. A análise macroscópica foi realizada por um investigador cego quanto ao grupo de origem dos animais. A análise estatística utilizou o teste exato de Fisher e o c2. Um P < 0,05 foi considerado significativo.RESULTADOS: As aderências foram significativamente mais comuns nos grupos nos quais a prótese foi utilizada (59% vs. 95%; P = 0,01), assim como nos gruposnos quais foi feita a reperitonização (58% vs. 100%; P = 0,03).  CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados sugerem que a retícula de polipropileno e a reperitonização são fatores independentes entre si quanto à indução de formaçãode aderências

    Diseño y desarrollo del compostaje Bokashi con perspectiva de género para productoras del MTE rural en transición agroecológica

    El cinturón hortícola de La Plata se constituye como uno de los polos de producción de alimentos para consumo interno más importantes de nuestro país. En esta propuesta, se trabaja específicamente con mujeres agricultoras, permitiendo poner en valor su trabajo, a la vez que construyendo saberes, prácticas y herramientas específicas que maximicen los resultados de su labor a través del diseño. En este sentido, la técnica del bokashi como un bioinsumo de fabricación propia en la producción fruti-hortícola es una estrategia sustentable para el ciclado e incorporación de nutrientes y microorganismos benéficos al suelo. Sin embargo en su elaboración es necesario palear frecuentemente la totalidad de la pila en el suelo, razón que limita la posibilidad de que las mujeres productoras lo lleven a cabo. Proponemos el diseño y auto-construcción del dispositivo “bokashiera” que elimina el “paleo”. La “bokashiera”, compuesta de materiales reciclados y de bajo costo, tiene la capacidad de rotar en forma manual sobre un soporte, sin ningún esfuerzo. A través de talleres teórico-prácticos organizados en la cooperativa proponemos el abordaje de la técnica del bokashi y la materialización a través del diseño de la “bokashiera” para empoderar a las mujeres del MTE Rural, logrando la apropiación no sólo material sino simbólica para colocarlas en un lugar de autonomía personal y social.Facultad de Trabajo Socia

    Muchos países en vía de desarrollo han experimentado un significativo descenso de la mortalidad infantil en las últimas décadas. Pero aún persisten problemas tales como la desnutrición, anemia e infecciones parasitarias que afectan el desarrollo físico e intelectual de los niños. La alimentación es un derecho básico y universal y no han sido suficientes los esfuerzos para garantizar su acceso a toda la población mundial. La desnutrición y deficiencia de micronutrientes son problemas de salud pública en los países en vías de desarrollo, por el impacto que ocasiona sobre la salud, educación y economía; afectando principalmente a niños.
