    The Air Force's social responsibility to communities affected by base closures

The problems and adverse affects of an Air Force base closure upon the civilian community and civilian personnel involved. 2. The current programs, policies, techniques, and procedures, used by the Department of Defense and the Air Force, in helping communities affected by a base closure to adjust to the inherent economic problems. 3. The Federal government's and in particular the Air Force's social responsibility to the communities and civilian personnel affected by a closure action. The main contention brought out in this thesis is that the Air Force is not acting as socially responsible as it could toward communities affected by closure actions. However, greater social responsibility is possible through a better informed Air Force. Therefore, the offered solution points toward the Air Force Information Officer and his responsibility to promote the social responsibility concept

    Endophyte Growth on Two Species of Conifers on the Shawangunk Ridge, Mid-Hudson Valley, New York

    The Middle Silurian Shawangunk Formation is underlain by the Upper Ordovician Martinsburg Formation in the mid-Hudson Valley. The Shawangunk Ridge is composed of a very resistant quartz pebble conglomerate whereas the Martinsburg consists of less resistant shales and graywackes. Endophytes are fungi growing asymptomatically in plant tissues that are thought to act as a support system for the plant, protecting against desiccation and pathogens. We compared the diversity of endophytes colonizing two species of conifers, Pinus strobus and Tsuga canadensis, on two different substrates, conglomerate and shale. We hypothesized that there would be a marked difference in diversity between the two substrates, resulting in different microenvironments for the endophytes, since differences in diversity between species would occur if endophytes are host specific. We collected 7 individuals of each of the two conifer species along with pH readings of the soil at the base of the trees. Readings were taken at several sites on the Ridge last spring (2015). The needles of the specimens collected were surfaced sterilized and plated within 48 hours, then grown for 8 weeks on an agar plate. There was no difference in pH between the two substrates. To date, we have grown over 90 morphotypes of endophytes, including fungi from the genera Cladosporium, Chaetomium, Alternaria, Lophodermium, and Phoma. We expect to continue this project as we investigate endophyte growth on other genera such as Quercus, Hamamelis and Acer

    Notch-mediated expansion of human cord blood progenitor cells capable of rapid myeloid reconstitution

    Delayed myeloid engraftment after cord blood transplantation (CBT) is thought to result from inadequate numbers of progenitor cells in the graft and is associated with increased early transplant–related morbidity and mortality. New culture strategies that increase the number of cord blood progenitors capable of rapid myeloid engraftment after CBT would allow more widespread use of this stem cell source for transplantation. Here we report the development of a clinically relevant Notch-mediated ex vivo expansion system for human CD34+ cord blood progenitors that results in a marked increase in the absolute number of stem/progenitor cells, including those capable of enhanced repopulation in the marrow of immunodeficient nonobese diabetic–severe combined immunodeficient (NOD-SCID) mice. Furthermore, when cord blood progenitors expanded ex vivo in the presence of Notch ligand were infused in a clinical setting after a myeloablative preparative regimen for stem cell transplantation, the time to neutrophil recovery was substantially shortened. To our knowledge, this is the first instance of rapid engraftment derived from ex vivo expanded stem/progenitor cells in humans

    Basis-independent methods for the two-Higgs-doublet model II. The significance of tan(beta)

    In the most general two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM), there is no distinction between the two complex hypercharge-one SU(2) doublet scalar fields, Phi_a (a=1,2). Thus, any two orthonormal linear combinations of these two fields can serve as a basis for the Lagrangian. All physical observables of the model must therefore be basis-independent. For example, tan(beta)=/ is basis-dependent and thus cannot be a physical parameter of the model. In this paper, we provide a basis-independent treatment of the Higgs sector with particular attention to the neutral Higgs boson mass-eigenstates, which generically are not eigenstates of CP. We then demonstrate that all physical Higgs couplings are indeed independent of tan(beta). In specialized versions of the 2HDM, tan(beta) can be promoted to a physical parameter of the Higgs-fermion interactions. In the most general 2HDM, the Higgs-fermion couplings can be expressed in terms of a number of physical "tan(beta)--like" parameters that are manifestly basis-independent. The minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model provides a simple framework for exhibiting such effects.Comment: 56 pages, 5 tables, with Eq.     Application of time–stress superposition to viscoelastic behavior of polyamide 6,6 fiber and its “true” elastic modulus

    The viscoelastic behavior of semi-crystalline polyamide 6,6 fiber is exploited in viscoelastically prestressed polymeric matrix composites. To understand better the underlying prestress mechanisms, strain–time performance of the fiber material is investigated in this work, under high creep stress values (330–665 MPa). A latch-based Weibull model enables prediction of the “true” elastic modulus through instantaneous deformation from the creep-recovery data, giving 4.6 ± 0.4 GPa. The fiber shows approximate linear viscoelastic characteristics, so that the time–stress superposition principle (TSSP) can be implemented, with a linear relationship between the stress shift factor and applied stress. The resulting master creep curve enables creep behavior at 330 MPa to be predicted over a large timescale, thus creep at 590 MPa for 24 h would be equivalent to a 330 MPa creep stress for ∼5200 years. Similarly, the TSSP is applied to the resulting recovery data, to obtain a master recovery curve. This is equivalent to load removal in the master creep curve, in which the yarns would have been subjected to 330 MPa creep stress for ∼4.56 × 107 h. Since our work involves high stress values, the findings may be of interest to those involved with long-term load-bearing applications using polyamide materials

    Searching for the Kuhnian moment : the Black-Scholes-Merton formula and the evolution of modern finance theory

    The Black-Scholes-Merton formula has been put to widespread use by options traders because it provides a means of calculating the theoretically 'correct' price of stock options. Traders can therefore see whether the market price of stock options undervalues or overvalues them compared with their hypothetical Black-Scholes-Merton price, before choosing to buy or sell options accordingly. As a consequence of this close relationship between options pricing theory and options pricing practice, a strong performativity loop was activated, whereby market prices quickly converged on the hypothetical Black-Scholes-Merton prices following the dissemination of the formula. The theory has therefore had significant real-world effects, but how should we characterize the initial instinct to derive the theory from a philosophy of science perspective? The two books under review suggest that a Kuhnian reading of the advancement of scientific knowledge might well be the most appropriate. But, on closer inspection, it becomes clear that the publication of the Black-Scholes-Merton formula should not be seen as a Kuhnian moment with paradigm-shaping attributes. It is shown that, at most, the formula acts as an important exemplar which, via its use in the training of options pricing theorists and options pricing practitioners, reinforces the entrenchment of finance theory within the orthodox economics worldview
