Effects of a nonadiabatic wall on supersonic shock/boundary-layer interactions
Direct numerical simulations are employed to investigate a shock wave impinging on a turbulent boundary layer at free-stream Mach number M=2.28 with different wall thermal conditions, including adiabatic, cooled, and heated, for a wide range of deflection angles. It is found that the thermal boundary condition at the wall has a large effect on the size of the interaction region and on the level of pressure fluctuations. The distribution of the Stanton number shows a good agreement with prior experimental studies and confirms the strong heat transfer and complex pattern within the interaction region. An effort was also made to describe the unsteady features of the flow by means of wall pressure and heat flux spectra. Numerical results indicate that the changes in the interaction length due to the wall thermal condition are mainly linked to the incoming boundary layer, which is in agreement with previous experimental studies
Cosmic rays in the TeV region with the ARGO-YBJ detector
Very High Energy (VHE) γ-astronomy and cosmic ray physics are the main goals of the ARGO-YBJ experiment. The detector is located in Tibet (People’s Republic of China) and is a full-coverage Extensive Air Shower array consisting of a carpet of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). Altitude and full coverage ensure an unprecedented reconstruction of showers close to their maximum size. The performances of the detector and the present results concerning TeV cosmic
ray physics will be presented
Person, capabilities and Human Rights. Two contemporary trends.
Contemporary theories of justice may be categorized in mainly political
and natural justice theories. The former are generally conceived as an
instance of the Kantian philosophical tradition, whereas the latter are rooted
in classical-philosophy theories. Each of them is furthermore grounded on a
different conception of the person: "political", or "ontological". This paper
aims to bring them in rapport, taking in special account Martha Nussbaum's
and Sergio Cotta's justice theories. The paper argues that the universal respect
of individuals' rights -which is at the core of Nussbaum's theory- finds better
support in Cotta's onto-phenomenological approach to justice, rather than in
Rawls'political liberalism
Reverse-Safe Data Structures for Text Indexing
We introduce the notion of reverse-safe data structures. These are data structures that prevent the reconstruction of the data they encode (i.e., they cannot be easily reversed). A data structure D is called z-reverse-safe when there exist at least z datasets with the same set of answers as the ones stored by D. The main challenge is to ensure that D stores as many answers to useful queries as possible, is constructed efficiently, and has size close to the size of the original dataset it encodes. Given a text of length n and an integer z, we propose an algorithm which constructs a z-reverse-safe data structure that has size O(n) and answers pattern matching queries of length at most d optimally, where d is maximal for any such z-reverse-safe data structure. The construction algorithm takes O(n ω log d) time, where ω is the matrix multiplication exponent. We show that, despite the n ω factor, our engineered implementation takes only a few minutes to finish for million-letter texts. We further show that plugging our method in data analysis applications gives insignificant or no data utility loss. Finally, we show how our technique can be extended to support applications under a realistic adversary model
