    Parameters of the Magnetic Flux inside Coronal Holes

    Parameters of magnetic flux distribution inside low-latitude coronal holes (CHs) were analyzed. A statistical study of 44 CHs based on Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/MDI full disk magnetograms and SOHO/EIT 284\AA images showed that the density of the net magnetic flux, BnetB_{{\rm net}}, does not correlate with the associated solar wind speeds, VxV_x. Both the area and net flux of CHs correlate with the solar wind speed and the corresponding spatial Pearson correlation coefficients are 0.75 and 0.71, respectively. A possible explanation for the low correlation between BnetB_{{\rm net}} and VxV_x is proposed. The observed non-correlation might be rooted in the structural complexity of the magnetic field. As a measure of complexity of the magnetic field, the filling factor, f(r) f(r), was calculated as a function of spatial scales. In CHs, f(r)f(r) was found to be nearly constant at scales above 2 Mm, which indicates a monofractal structural organization and smooth temporal evolution. The magnitude of the filling factor is 0.04 from the Hinode SOT/SP data and 0.07 from the MDI/HR data. The Hinode data show that at scales smaller than 2 Mm, the filling factor decreases rapidly, which means a mutlifractal structure and highly intermittent, burst-like energy release regime. The absence of necessary complexity in CH magnetic fields at scales above 2 Mm seems to be the most plausible reason why the net magnetic flux density does not seem to be related to the solar wind speed: the energy release dynamics, needed for solar wind acceleration, appears to occur at small scales below 1 Mm.Comment: 6 figures, approximately 23 pages.     Non-perturbative effects and the resummed Higgs transverse momentum distribution at the LHC

    We investigate the form of the non-perturbative parameterization in both the impact parameter (b) space and transverse momentum (p_T) space resummation formalisms for the transverse momentum distribution of single massive bosons produced at hadron colliders. We propose to analyse data on Upsilon hadroproduction as a means of studying the non-perturbative contribution in processes with two gluons in the initial state. We also discuss the theoretical errors on the resummed Higgs transverse momentum distribution at the LHC arising from the non-perturbative contribution.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figure

    Effect of rituximab treatment on T and B cell subsets in lymph node biopsies of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

    Contains fulltext : 205472.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)OBJECTIVES: The exact underlying mechanism of rituximab treatment in patients with RA is poorly defined and knowledge about the effect of B cell depletion on immune cells in secondary lymphoid organs is lacking. We analysed lymphoid tissue responses to rituximab in RA patients. METHODS: Fourteen RA patients received 2 x 1000 mg rituximab intravenously, and lymph node (LN) biopsies were obtained before and 4 weeks after the first infusion. Tissues were examined by flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry and quantitative PCR. LN biopsies from five healthy individuals (HC) served as controls. RESULTS: LN biopsies of RA patients showed increased frequencies of CD21+CD23+IgDhighIgMvariable follicular B cells and CD3+CD25+CD69+ early activated, tissue resident T cells when compared with HCs. After treatment, there was incomplete depletion of LN B cells. There was a significant decrease in CD27-IgD+ naive B cells, and CD27+IgD+ unswitched memory B cells including the CD27+IgD+IgM+ subset and follicular B cells. Strikingly, CD27+IgD- switched memory B cells persisted in LN biopsies after rituximab treatment. In the T cell compartment, a significant decrease was observed in the frequency of early activated, tissue resident T cells after rituximab treatment, but late activated T cells persisted. B cell proliferation inducing cytokine IL-21 was higher expressed in LN biopsies of RA patients compared with HC and expression was not affected by rituximab treatment. CONCLUSION: Rituximab does not cure RA, possibly due to persistence of switched memory B cells in lymphoid tissues suggesting that factors promoting B cell survival and differentiation need to be additionally targeted

    Neutrino mean free paths in spin-polarized neutron Fermi liquids

    Neutrino mean free paths in magnetized neutron matter are calculated using the Hartree-Fock approximation with effective Skyrme and Gogny forces in the framework of the Landau Fermi Liquid Theory. It is shown that describing nuclear interaction with Skyrme forces and for magnetic field strengths log10B(G)≳17log_{10} B(G) \gtrsim 17, the neutrino mean free paths stay almost unchanged at intermediate densities but they largely increase at high densities when they are compared to the field-free case results. However the description with Gogny forces differs from the previous and mean free paths stay almonst unchanged or decrease at densities [1−2]ρ0[1-2]\rho_0. This different behaviour can be explained due to the combination of common mild variation of the Landau parameters with both types of forces and the values of the nucleon effective mass and induced magnetization of matter under presence of a strong magnetic field as described with the two parametrizations of the nuclear interaction.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

The results suggest that the combined use of P-rich chicken litter (organic matter) and inorganic P sources can be used to close the growth gap between the sole use of organic fertilizer and the use of conventional P fertilizer.     Differential Cross Section for Higgs Boson Production Including All-Orders Soft Gluon Resummation

    The transverse momentum QTQ_T distribution is computed for inclusive Higgs boson production at the energy of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We focus on the dominant gluon-gluon subprocess in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and incorporate contributions from the quark-gluon and quark-antiquark channels. Using an impact-parameter bb-space formalism, we include all-orders resummation of large logarithms associated with emission of soft gluons. Our resummed results merge smoothly at large QTQ_T with the fixed-order expectations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, as they should, with no need for a matching procedure. They show a high degree of stability with respect to variation of parameters associated with the non-perturbative input at low QTQ_T. We provide distributions dσ/dydQTd\sigma/dy dQ_T for Higgs boson masses from MZM_Z to 200 GeV. The average transverse momentum at zero rapidity yy grows approximately linearly with mass of the Higgs boson over the range MZ<mh≃0.18mh+18M_Z < m_h \simeq 0.18 m_h + 18 ~GeV. We provide analogous results for ZZ boson production, for which we compute ≃25 \simeq 25 GeV. The harder transverse momentum distribution for the Higgs boson arises because there is more soft gluon radiation in Higgs boson production than in ZZ production.Comment: 42 pages, latex, 26 figures.     Joint Resummation for Higgs Production

    We study the application of the joint resummation formalism to Higgs production via gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC, defining inverse transforms by analytic continuation. We work at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We find that at low Q_T the resummed Higgs Q_T distributions are comparable in the joint and pure-Q_T formalisms, with relatively small influence from threshold enhancement in this range. We find a modest (about ten percent) decrease in the inclusive cross section, relative to pure threshold resummation.Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX, 5 figures as eps file

    AbstractPractical implementation of Bayesian decision making is hindered by the fact that optimal decisions may be sensitive to the model inputs: the prior, the likelihood and/or the underlying utility function. Given the structure of a problem, the analyst has to decide which sensitivity measures are relevant and compute them efficiently. We address the issue of robustness of the optimal action in a decision making problem with respect to the prior model and the utility function. We discuss some general principles and apply novel computational strategies in the context of two relatively complex medical decision making problems
