Stressed but Stable: Canopy Loss Decreased Species Synchrony and Metabolic Variability in an Intertidal Hard-Bottom Community
The temporal stability of aggregate community properties depends on the dynamics of the component species. Since species growth can compensate for the decline of other species, synchronous species dynamics can maintain stability (i.e. invariability) in aggregate properties such as community abundance and metabolism. In field experiments we tested the separate and interactive effects of two stressors associated with storminess–loss of a canopy-forming species and mechanical disturbances–on species synchrony and community respiration of intertidal hard-bottom communities on Helgoland Island, NE Atlantic. Treatments consisted of regular removal of the canopy-forming seaweed Fucus serratus and a mechanical disturbance applied once at the onset of the experiment in March 2006. The level of synchrony in species abundances was assessed from estimates of species percentage cover every three months until September 2007. Experiments at two sites consistently showed that canopy loss significantly reduced species synchrony. Mechanical disturbance had neither separate nor interactive effects on species synchrony. Accordingly, in situ measurements of CO2-fluxes showed that canopy loss, but not mechanical disturbances, significantly reduced net primary productivity and temporal variation in community respiration during emersion periods. Our results support the idea that compensatory dynamics may stabilise aggregate properties. They further suggest that the ecological consequences of the loss of a single structurally important species may be stronger than those derived from smaller-scale mechanical disturbances in natural ecosystems
A database of the coseismic effects following the 30 October 2016 Norcia earthquake in Central Italy
We provide a database of the coseismic geological surface effects following the Mw 6.5 Norcia earthquake that hit central Italy on 30 October 2016. This was one of the strongest seismic events to occur in Europe in the past thirty years, causing complex surface ruptures over an area of >400 km 2. The database originated from the collaboration of several European teams (Open EMERGEO Working Group; about 130 researchers) coordinated by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. The observations were collected by performing detailed field surveys in the epicentral region in order to describe the geometry and kinematics of surface faulting, and subsequently of landslides and other secondary coseismic effects. The resulting database consists of homogeneous georeferenced records identifying 7323 observation points, each of which contains 18 numeric and string fields of relevant information. This database will impact future earthquake studies focused on modelling of the seismic processes in active extensional settings, updating probabilistic estimates of slip distribution, and assessing the hazard of surface faulting
The health determinants in young children: Testing a new surveillance system in Italy
In recent years, the scientific community has stressed the need to invest in the first 1,000 days of life - the time spanning between conception and the 2nd birthday - because it is during this period that the foundations of health are laid and whose effects will be present throughout the life and may influence the next generation. Taking this into account, in 2013 the National Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CCM) of the Italian Ministry of Health promoted and financed a project to test a surveillance system of the main determinants of health concerning the child between the conception period and the 2nd years of life which are included in the National Programme “GenitoriPiù”: folic acid before and during pregnancy, abstention from tobacco and alcohol during pregnancy and lactation, breastfeeding, infant sleep position, vaccination attitude, and early reading. The Project, started in January 2014 and ended in August 2016, has piloted the design, testing, and evaluation of the surveillance system with the view to national extension and the repeatability over time. The surveillance system has been designed to collect data through a questionnaire compiled by mothers in vaccination centres, in order to produce indicators which will enable territorial and intertempo-ral comparisons to be made. The project has shown the feasibility of this system, identifying favourable conditions and possible difficulties, and its ability to collect important information on children's health
New varying speed of light theories
We review recent work on the possibility of a varying speed of light (VSL).
We start by discussing the physical meaning of a varying , dispelling the
myth that the constancy of is a matter of logical consistency. We then
summarize the main VSL mechanisms proposed so far: hard breaking of Lorentz
invariance; bimetric theories (where the speeds of gravity and light are not
the same); locally Lorentz invariant VSL theories; theories exhibiting a color
dependent speed of light; varying induced by extra dimensions (e.g. in the
brane-world scenario); and field theories where VSL results from vacuum
polarization or CPT violation. We show how VSL scenarios may solve the
cosmological problems usually tackled by inflation, and also how they may
produce a scale-invariant spectrum of Gaussian fluctuations, capable of
explaining the WMAP data. We then review the connection between VSL and
theories of quantum gravity, showing how ``doubly special'' relativity has
emerged as a VSL effective model of quantum space-time, with observational
implications for ultra high energy cosmic rays and gamma ray bursts. Some
recent work on the physics of ``black'' holes and other compact objects in VSL
theories is also described, highlighting phenomena associated with spatial (as
opposed to temporal) variations in . Finally we describe the observational
status of the theory. The evidence is currently slim -- redshift dependence in
the atomic fine structure, anomalies with ultra high energy cosmic rays, and
(to a much lesser extent) the acceleration of the universe and the WMAP data.
The constraints (e.g. those arising from nucleosynthesis or geological bounds)
are tight, but not insurmountable. We conclude with the observational
