ORIGIN OF LIGHT SCATTERING FROM DISORDERED SYSTEMS

Anelastic light scattering is computed numerically for model disordered systems (linear chains and 2-dimensional site and bond percolators), with and without electrical disorder. A detailed analysis of the vibrational modes and of their Raman activity evidences that two extreme mechanisms for scattering may be singled out. One of these resembles scattering from finite size systems, while the other mechanisms originates from spatial fluctuations of the polarizability and is such that modes in even small frequency intervals may have very different Raman activities. As a consequence, the average coupling coefficient C(ω)C(\omega) is the variance of a zero-average quantity. Our analysis shows that for both linear chains and 2-dimensional percolators the second mechanism dominates over the first, and therefore Raman scattering from disordered systems is essentially due to spatial fluctuations.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 7 figures available on request

A shear cell study on oral and inhalation grade lactose powders

Abstract Shear cell tests have been conducted on twenty different lactose powders, most of which commercially available for oral or inhalation purposes, spanning a wide range of particle sizes, particle morphologies, production processes. The aims of the investigation were: i) to verify the reliability of the technique in evaluating and classifying the flowability of powders; ii) to understand the connection between the flowability of a powder and the morphological properties of its particles; iii) to find a general mathematical relationship able to predict the yield locus shape given the particle size, shape and consolidation state of a lactose powder. These aspects and their limitations are detailed in the manuscript together with other interesting findings on the stick-slip behavior observed in most of the lactose powders examined

Background The efficacy and toxicity of hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (HSRT) in combination with whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT), for the treatment of 1-4 brain metastases, using a non invasive fixation of the skull, was investigated. Methods Between 04/2001 and 01/2006 30 patients with 44 brain metastases underwent irradiation. Every patient received WBRT (10 x 3 Gy); 41/44 lesions received HSRT boost with a median dose fraction of 6 Gy, the fractionation schemes were 3 x 6 Gy and 4 x 8 Gy; a median total dose of 18 Gy was delivered to the tumor isocenter. Results The median survival period was 9.15 months, the actuarial 1-year overall survival and freedom from new brain metastases were 36.6% and 87.9%, respectively; at univariate analysis Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) was statistically significant (P = 0.05); the actuarial 1-year local control for the 41/44 lesions was 86.1%. No patient had acute or late complications. Conclusions HSRT as a concomitant boost during WBRT is a safe and well tolerated treatment for selected patients with brain metastases

Microwave Devices for Wearable Sensors and IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is currently highly demanded in multiple scenarios and in particular plays an important role in solving medical-related challenges. RF and microwave technologies, coupled with wireless energy transfer, are interesting candidates because of their inherent contactless spectrometric capabilities and for the wireless transmission of sensing data. This article reviews some recent achievements in the field of wearable sensors, highlighting the benefits that these solutions introduce in operative contexts, such as indoor localization and microwave sensing. Wireless power transfer is an essential requirement to be fulfilled to allow these sensors to be not only wearable but also compact and lightweight while avoiding bulky batteries. Flexible materials and 3D printing polymers, as well as daily garments, are widely exploited within the presented solutions, allowing comfort and wearability without renouncing the robustness and reliability of the built-in wearable sensor
