Bell's theorem as a signature of nonlocality: a classical counterexample
For a system composed of two particles Bell's theorem asserts that averages
of physical quantities determined from local variables must conform to a family
of inequalities. In this work we show that a classical model containing a local
probabilistic interaction in the measurement process can lead to a violation of
the Bell inequalities. We first introduce two-particle phase-space
distributions in classical mechanics constructed to be the analogs of quantum
mechanical angular momentum eigenstates. These distributions are then employed
in four schemes characterized by different types of detectors measuring the
angular momenta. When the model includes an interaction between the detector
and the measured particle leading to ensemble dependencies, the relevant Bell
inequalities are violated if total angular momentum is required to be
conserved. The violation is explained by identifying assumptions made in the
derivation of Bell's theorem that are not fulfilled by the model. These
assumptions will be argued to be too restrictive to see in the violation of the
Bell inequalities a faithful signature of nonlocality.Comment: Extended manuscript. Significant change
Models for quantitative charge imaging by atomic force microscopy
Two models are presented for quantitative charge imaging with an atomic-force microscope. The first is appropriate for noncontact mode and the second for intermittent contact (tapping) mode imaging. Different forms for the contact force are used to demonstrate that quantitative charge imaging is possible without precise knowledge of the contact interaction. From the models, estimates of the best charge sensitivity of an unbiased standard atomic-force microscope cantilever are found to be on the order of a few electrons
The 'War on Poverty' after 40 Years: A Minskyan Assessment
Hyman Minsky is best known for his work in the area of financial economics, and especially for his financial instability hypothesis. In recent years, some authors have also recognized his advocacy of the “employer of last resort” as part of his “big government” intervention to help maintain stability. Diffusive Transport Enhanced by Thermal Velocity Fluctuations
We study the contribution of advection by thermal velocity fluctuations to
the effective diffusion coefficient in a mixture of two indistinguishable
fluids. The enhancement of the diffusive transport depends on the system size L
and grows as \ln(L/L_0) in quasi two-dimensional systems, while in three
dimensions it scales as L_0^{-1}-L^{-1}, where L_0 is a reference length. The
predictions of a simple fluctuating hydrodynamics theory are compared to
results from particle simulations and a finite-volume solver and excellent
agreement is observed. Our results conclusively demonstrate that the nonlinear
advective terms need to be retained in the equations of fluctuating
hydrodynamics when modeling transport in small-scale finite systems.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. Lett., 201
