A multiwavlength study of PSR B0628-28: The first overluminous rotation-powered pulsar?
The ROSAT source RX J0630.8-2834 was suggested by positional coincidence to
be the X-ray counterpart of the old field pulsar PSR B0628-28. This
association, however, was regarded to be unlikely based on the computed
energetics of the putative X-ray counterpart. In this paper we report on
multiwavelength observations of PSR B0628-28 made with the ESO/NTT observatory
in La Silla, the Jodrell Bank radio observatory and XMM-Newton. Although the
optical observations do not detect any counterpart of RX J0630.8-2834 down to a
limiting magnitude of V=26.1 mag and B=26.3 mag, XMM-Newton observations
finally confirmed it to be the pulsar's X-ray counterpart by detecting X-ray
pulses with the radio pulsar's spin-period. The X-ray pulse profile is
characterized by a single broad peak with a second smaller peak leading the
main pulse component by ~144 degree. The fraction of pulsed photons is (38 +-
7)% with no strong energy dependence in the XMM-Newton bandpass. The pulsar's
X-ray spectrum is well described by a single component power law with photon
index 2.63^{+0.23}_{-0.15}, indicating that the pulsar's X radiation is
dominated by non-thermal emission processes. A low level contribution of
thermal emission from residual cooling or from heated polar caps, cannot be
excluded. The pulsar's spin-down to X-ray energy conversion efficiency is
obtained to be ~16% for the radio dispersion measure inferred pulsar distance.
If confirmed, PSR B0628-28 would be the first X-ray overluminous
rotation-powered pulsar identified among all ~1400 radio pulsars known today.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Find a paper copy with higher

How cold is cold dark matter? Small scales constraints from the flux power spectrum of the high-redshift Lyman-alpha forest
We present constraints on the mass of warm dark matter (WDM) particles
derived from the Lyman-alpha flux power spectrum of 55 high- resolution HIRES
spectra at 2.0 < z < 6.4. From the HIRES spectra, we obtain a lower limit of
mwdm > 1.2 keV 2 sigma if the WDM consists of early decoupled thermal relics
and mwdm > 5.6 keV (2 sigma) for sterile neutrinos. Adding the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey Lyman-alpha flux power spectrum, we get mwdm > 4 keV and mwdm > 28
keV (2 sigma) for thermal relics and sterile neutrinos. These results improve
previous constraints by a factor two.Comment: Some issues clarified (especially resolution related). Conclusions

Resonant enhancements of high-order harmonic generation
Solving the one-dimensional time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for simple
model potentials, we investigate resonance-enhanced high-order harmonic
generation, with emphasis on the physical mechanism of the enhancement. By
truncating a long-range potential, we investigate the significance of the
long-range tail, the Rydberg series, and the existence of highly excited states
for the enhancements in question. We conclude that the channel closings typical
of a short-range or zero-range potential are capable of generating essentially

Search for magnetic fields in particle-accelerating colliding-wind binaries
Some colliding-wind massive binaries, called particle-accelerating
colliding-wind binaries (PACWB), exhibit synchrotron radio emission, which is
assumed to be generated by a stellar magnetic field. However, no measurement of
magnetic fields in these stars has ever been performed. We aim at quantifying
the possible stellar magnetic fields present in PACWB to provide constraints
for models. We gathered 21 high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of
9 PACWB available in the ESPaDOnS, Narval and HarpsPol archives. We analysed
these observations with the Least Squares Deconvolution method. We separated
the binary spectral components when possible. No magnetic signature is detected
in any of the 9 PACWB stars and all longitudinal field measurements are
compatible with 0 G. We derived the upper field strength of a possible field
that could have remained hidden in the noise of the data. While the data are
not very constraining for some stars, for several stars we could derive an
upper limit of the polar field strength of the order of 200 G. We can therefore
exclude the presence of strong or moderate stellar magnetic fields in PACWB,
typical of the ones present in magnetic massive stars. Weak magnetic fields
could however be present in these objects. These observational results provide
the first quantitative constraints for future models of PACWB.Comment: Accepted in A&
The Struve-Sahade effect in the optical spectra of O-type binaries I. Main-sequence systems
We present a spectroscopic analysis of four massive binary systems that are
known or are good candidates to display the Struve-Sahade effect (defined as
the apparent strengthening of the secondary spectrum of the binary when the
star is approaching, and the corresponding weakening of the lines when it is
receding).
We use high resolution optical spectra to determine new orbital solutions and
spectral types of HD 165052, HD 100213, HD 159176 and DH Cep. As good knowledge
of the fundamental parameters of the considered systems is necessary to examine
the Struve-Sahade effect. We then study equivalent width variations in the
lines of both components of these binaries during their orbital cycle.
In the case of these four systems, variations appear in the equivalent widths
of some lines during the orbital cycle, but the definition given above can any
longer be valid, since it is now clear that the effect modifies the primary
spectrum as much as the secondary spectrum. Furthermore, the lines affected,
and the way in which they are affected, depend on the considered system. For at
least two of them (HD 100213 and HD 159176) these variations probably reflect
the ellipsoidal variable nature of the system.Comment: 12 pages, 20 figures, in press A&
State education as high-yield investment: human capital theory in European policy discourse
Human Capital Theory has been an increasingly important phenomenon in economic thought over the last 50 years. The central role it affords to education has become even more marked in recent years as the concept of the ‘knowledge economy’ has become a global concern. In this paper, the prevalence of Human Capital Theory within European educational policy discourse is explored. The paper examines a selection of policy documents from a number of disparate European national contexts and considers the extent to which the ideas of Human Capital Theory can be seen to be influential. In the second part of the paper, the implications of Human Capital Theory for education are considered, with a particular focus on the possible ramifications at a time of economic austerity. The paper argues that Human Capital Theory risks offering a diminished view of the person, a diminished view of education, but that with its sole focus on economic goals leaves room for educationists and others to argue for the educational, social, and moral values it ignores, and for the conception of the good life and good society it fails to mention
Axillary bud viability and dry matter production of Poa ligularis in Patagonian grasslands
Poa ligularis Nees is one of the dominant perennial grass species in Patagonian grasslands. This is the first field study which investigated the effects of defoliation frequency on its number of viable axillary buds, and subsequent dry matter production during one growing season. Experiments were arranged in a randomized complete block design. Treatments included one defoliation height (10 cm), from one to five times a year, and undefoliated controls. Bud respiratory activity was examined usingthe tetrazolium test and the vital stain Evan's blue. At the end of the growing season, plants that have been defoliated more than three times showed significatively (p<0.05) lower number of respiratory active buds than unclipped controls. A high defoliation frequency increased bud death in stem bases. Both defoliated and undefoliated plants produced more (p<0.05) axillary buds at the periphery than at their center. Defoliation treatments increased shoot weight by 13.4% on average compared with undefoliated controls, but reduced in by 10% the average number of metabolically active axillary buds. This indicates that this reduction, however, was not high enough to constrain dry matter production.It appears that Poa ligularis could tolerate moderate grazing frequency and intensity without compromising its potential regrowth capacity. Longer-term studies of the effects of defoliation on dry matter production and bud metabolic activity are needed to understand the cumulative effects of grazing of P. ligularis in natural grasslands.Poa ligularis Nees es una de las especies de gramíneas perennes dominantes en los pastizales naturales de la Patagonia. Este es el primer estudio que investigó los efectos de la frequencia de defoliación sobre su número de yemas axilares viables, y subsiguiente producción de materia seca durante una estación de crecimiento. Los estudios se efectuaron utilizando un diseño de bloques completamente al azar. Los tratamientos incluyeron una altura de defoliación (10 cm), de una a cinco veces por año, además de controles no defoliados. La actividad respiratoria de las yemas fue examinada usando el método del tetrazolio y el colorante vital azul de Evans.Hacia el final de la estación de crecimiento, las plantas que habían sido defoliadas más de tres veces mostraron un número significativamente menor (p<0.05) de yemas con actividad respiratoria que los controles no defoliados. Una alta frecuencia de defoliación incrementó la muerte de yemas en las bases de tallos. Todas las plantas- defoliadas o no, produjeron más (p<0.05) yemas axilares en su periferia que en su centro. La defoliación incrementó 13.4% el peso de los tallos en promedio, pero redujo en 10% el número promedio de yemas axilares metabólicamente activas. Esto indica que esta reducción , sin embargo, no fue suficiente como para limitar la producción de materia seca. Parece que P. ligularis toleraría una frecuencia e intensidad moderada de pastoreo sin comprometer su capacidad potencial de rebrote. Se necesitan estudios a más largo plazo de los efectos de la defoliación en la producción de materia seca y actividad metabólica de las yemas para entender los efectos acumulativos del pastoreo de Poa ligularis en los pastizales naturales.Fil: Souto, Cintia Paola. A binary signature in the non-thermal radio-emitter Cyg OB2 #9
Aims: Non-thermal radio emission associated with massive stars is believed to
arise from a wind-wind collision in a binary system. However, the evidence of
binarity is still lacking in some cases, notably Cyg OB2 #9 Methods: For
several years, we have been monitoring this heavily-reddened star from various
observatories. This campaign allowed us to probe variations both on short and
long timescales and constitutes the first in-depth study of the visible
spectrum of this object. Results: Our observations provide the very first
direct evidence of a companion in Cyg OB2 #9, confirming the theoretical
wind-wind collision scenario. These data suggest a highly eccentric orbit with
a period of a few years, compatible with the 2yr-timescale measured in the
radio range. In addition, the signature of the wind-wind collision is very
likely reflected in the behaviour of some emission lines.Comment: accepted by A&A, 4 p, 3figure
The 2-10 keV emission properties of PSR B1937+21
We present the results of a BeppoSAX observation of the fastest pulsar known:
PSR B1937+21. The ~ 200 ks observation (78.5 (34) ks MECS (LECS) exposure
times) allowed us to investigate with high statistical significance both the
spectral properties and the pulse profile shape. The absorbed power law
spectral model gave a photon index of ~ 1.7 and N_H ~ 2.3 x 10^22 cm^-2. These
values explain both a) the ROSAT non-detection and b) the deviant estimate of a
photon index of ~ 0.8 obtained by ASCA. The pulse profile appears, for the
first time, clearly double peaked with the main component much stronger than
the other. The statistical significance is 10 sigma (main peak) and 5 sigma
(secondary peak). The 1.6-10 keV pulsed fraction is consistent with 100%; only
in the 1.6-4 keV band there is a ~ 2 sigma indication for a DC component. The
secondary peak is detected significantly only for energies above 3 / 4 keV. The
unabsorbed (2-10 keV) flux is F_2-10 = 3.7 x 10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1, implying a
luminosity of L_X = 4.6 x 10^31 Theta (d/3.6 kpc)^2 erg s^-1 and an X-ray
efficiency of eta = 4 x 10^-5 Theta, where Theta is the solid angle spanned by
the emission beam. These results are in agreement with those obtained by ASCA.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. To appear in the Proceedings of the
