    The Pharmacopsychometric Triangle to Illustrate the Effectiveness of T-PEMF Concomitant with Antidepressants in Treatment Resistant Patients: A Double-Blind, Randomised, Sham-Controlled Trial Revisited with Focus on the Patient-Reported Outcomes

    Background. Our T-PEMF trial has been revisited with focus on the pharmacopsychometric triangle in which effect size is used when comparing wanted versus unwanted clinical effects and quality of life as outcomes. In this analysis, we have especially focused on the self-reported HAM-D6. Methods. The antidepressive medication which the patients were resistant to was kept unchanged during the five weeks of active versus sham T-PEMF. Results. In total 21, patients received active T-PEMF, and 19 patients received sham T-PEMF. The effect size was 1.02 and 0.90, respectively, on HAM-D6 and HAM-D6-S. Concerning side effects, the active T-PEMF reduced the baseline score on concentration problems with an effect size of 0.44 while inducing more autonomic symptoms than sham T-PEMF with an effect size of −0.41. The advantage of active over sham T-PEMF obtained an effect size of 0.48. Conclusion. Active T-PEMF was found superior to sham T-PEMF within the pharmacopsychometric triangle with a clinically significant effect size level above 0.40

    On the Phenomenology of Hydrodynamic Shear Turbulence

    The question of a purely hydrodynamic origin of turbulence in accretion disks is reexamined, on the basis of a large body of experimental and numerical evidence on various subcritical (i.e., linearly stable) hydrodynamic flows. One of the main points of this paper is that the length scale and velocity fluctuation amplitude which are characteristic of turbulent transport in these flows scale like Rem1/2Re_m^{-1/2}, where RemRe_m is the minimal Reynolds number for the onset of fully developed turbulence. From this scaling, a simple explanation of the dependence of RemRe_m with relative gap width in subcritical Couette-Taylor flows is developed. It is also argued that flows in the shearing sheet limit should be turbulent, and that the lack of turbulence in all such simulations performed to date is most likely due to a lack of resolution, as a consequence of the effect of the Coriolis force on the large scale fluctuations of turbulent flows. These results imply that accretion flows should be turbulent through hydrodynamic processes. If this is the case, the Shakura-Sunyaev α\alpha parameter is constrained to lie in the range 10310110^{-3}-10^{-1} in accretion disks, depending on unknown features of the mechanism which sustains turbulence.     Reliability, validity and psychometric properties of the Greek translation of the Major Depression Inventory

    BACKGROUND: The Major Depression Inventory (MDI) is a brief self-rating scale for the assessment of depression. It is reported to be valid because it is based on the universe of symptoms of DSM-IV and ICD-10 depression. The aim of the current preliminary study was to assess the reliability, validity and psychometric properties of the Greek translation of the MDI. METHODS: 30 depressed patients of mean age 23.41 (± 5.77) years, and 68 controls patients of mean age 25.08 (± 11.42) years, entered the study. In 18 of them, the instrument was re-applied 1–2 days later and the Translation and Back Translation made. Clinical diagnosis was reached with the use of the SCAN v.2.0 and the International Personality Disorders Examination (IPDE). The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) and the Zung Depression Rating Scale (ZDRS) were applied for cross-validation purposes. Statistical analysis included ANOVA, the Spearman Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, Principal Components Analysis and the calculation of Cronbach's α. RESULTS: Sensitivity and specificity were 0.86 and 0.94, respectively, at 26/27. Cronbach's α for the total scale was equal to 0.89. The Spearman's rho between MDI and CES-D was 0.86 and between MDI and ZDRS was 0.76. The factor analysis revealed two factors but the first accounted for 54% of variance while the second only for 9%. The test-retest reliability was excellent (Spearman's rho between 0.53 and 0.96 for individual items and 0.89 for total score). CONCLUSION: The current study provided preliminary evidence concerning the reliability and validity of the Greek translation of the MDI. Its properties are similar to those reported in the international literature, but further research is necessary

    Quantitative X-ray phase-contrast microtomography from a compact laser-driven betatron source

    X-ray phase-contrast imaging has recently led to a revolution in resolving power and tissue contrast in biomedical imaging, microscopy and materials science. The necessary high spatial coherence is currently provided by either large-scale synchrotron facilities with limited beamtime access or by microfocus X-ray tubes with rather limited flux. X-rays radiated by relativistic electrons driven by well-controlled high-power lasers offer a promising route to a proliferation of this powerful imaging technology. A laser-driven plasma wave accelerates and wiggles electrons, giving rise to a brilliant keV X-ray emission. This so-called betatron radiation is emitted in a collimated beam with excellent spatial coherence and remarkable spectral stability. Here we present a phase-contrast microtomogram of a biological sample using betatron X-rays. Comprehensive source characterization enables the reconstruction of absolute electron densities. Our results suggest that laser-based X-ray technology offers the potential for filling the large performance gap between synchrotron- and current X-ray tube-based sources

    Subjective audio quality trade-offs in consumer multichannel audio-visual delivery systems. Part I: Effects of high frequency limitation

    ABSTRACT The subjective effects of controlled high frequency limitation of the audio bandwidth on assessment of audio quality were studied. The investigation was focused on the standard 5.1 multichannel audio set-up (Rec. ITU-R BS.775-1) and limited to the optimum listening position. The effect of video presence on audio quality assessment was also investigated. The results of the formal subjective test indicate that it is possible to limit the high frequency content of the centre or of the rear channels without significant deterioration of the audio quality for some of the investigated programme material types. Video presence has small effect on audio quality assessment

    The computational prediction of masking thresholds for ecologically valid interference scenarios

    Auditory interference scenarios, where a listener wishes to attend to some target audio while being presented with interfering audio, are prevalent in daily life. The goal of developing an accurate computational model which can predict masking thresholds for such scenarios is still incomplete. While some sophisticated, physiologically inspired, masking prediction models exist, they are rarely tested with ecologically valid programmes (such as music and speech). In order to test the accuracy of model predictions human listener data were required. To that end a masking threshold experiment was conducted for a variety of target and interferer programmes. The results were analysed alongside predictions made by the computational auditory signal processing and prediction model of (Jepsen et al. 2008). Masking thresholds were predicted to within 3.6 dB root mean squared error with the greatest prediction inaccuracies occurring in the presence of speech. These results are comparable to those in (Glasberg and Moore 2005) for predicting the audibility of time-varying sounds in the presence of background sounds, which otherwise represent the most accurate predictions of this type in the literature. © 2013 Acoustical Society of America
