Managing changes initiated by industrial big data technologies : a technochange management model
With the adoption of Internet of Things and advanced data analytical technologies in manufacturing firms, the industrial sector has launched an evolutionary journey toward the 4th industrial revolution, or so called Industry 4.0. Industrial big data is a core component to realize the vision of Industry 4.0. However, the implementation and usage of industrial big data tools in manufacturing firms will not merely be a technical endeavor, but can also lead to a thorough management reform. By means of a comprehensive review of literature related to Industry 4.0, smart manufacturing, industrial big data, information systems (IS) and technochange management, this paper aims to analyze potential changes triggered by the application of industrial big data in manufacturing firms, from technological, individual and organizational perspectives. Furthermore, in order to drive these changes more effectively and eliminate potential resistance, a conceptual technochange management model was developed and proposed. Drawn upon theories reported in literature of IS technochange management, this model proposed four types of interventions that can be used to copy with changes initiated by industrial big data technologies, including human process intervention, techno-structural intervention, human resources management intervention and strategic intervention. This model will be of interests and value to practitioners and researchers concerned with business reforms triggered by Industry 4.0 in general and by industrial big data technologies in particular
Efaproxiral red blood cell concentration predicts efficacy in patients with brain metastases
Efaproxiral (Efaproxynâą, RSR13), a synthetic allosteric modifier of haemoglobin (Hb), decreases Hb-oxygen (O2) binding affinity and enhances oxygenation of hypoxic tumours during radiation therapy. This analysis evaluated the Phase 3, Radiation Enhancing Allosteric Compound for Hypoxic Brain Metastases; RT-009 (REACH) study efficacy results in relation to efaproxiral exposure (efaproxiral red blood cell concentration (E-RBC) and number of doses). Recursive partitioning analysis Class I or II patients with brain metastases from solid tumours received standard whole-brain radiation therapy (3âGy/fraction Ă 10 days), plus supplemental O2 (4âl/min), either with efaproxiral (75 or 100âmg/kg daily) or without (control). Efaproxiral red blood cell concentrations were linearly extrapolated to all efaproxiral doses received. Three patient populations were analysed: (1) all eligible, (2) non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) as primary cancer, and (3) breast cancer primary. Efficacy endpoints were survival and response rate. Brain metastases patients achieving sufficient E-RBC (â©Ÿ483âÎŒg/ml) and receiving at least seven of 10 efaproxiral doses were most likely to experience survival and response benefits. Patients with breast cancer primary tumours generally achieved the target efaproxiral exposure and therefore gained greater benefit from efaproxiral treatment than NSCLC patients. This analysis defined the efaproxiral concentration-dependence in survival and response rate improvement, and provided a clearer understanding of efaproxiral dosing requirements
Translating upwards: linking the neural and social sciences via neuroeconomics
The social and neural sciences share a common interest in understanding
the mechanisms that underlie human behaviour. However, interactions between
neuroscience and social science disciplines remain strikingly narrow and tenuous.
We illustrate the scope and challenges for such interactions using the paradigmatic
example of neuroeconomics. Using quantitative analyses of both its scientific
literature and the social networks in its intellectual community, we show that
neuroeconomics now reflects a true disciplinary integration, such that research
topics and scientific communities with interdisciplinary span exert greater
influence on the field. However, our analyses also reveal key structural and
intellectual challenges in balancing the goals of neuroscience with those of the
social sciences. To address these challenges, we offer a set of prescriptive
recommendations for directing future research in neuroeconomics
Neuroscience and education: prime time to build the bridge
As neuroscience gains social traction and entices media attention, the notion that education has much to benefit from brain
research becomes increasingly popular. However, it has been argued that the fundamental bridge toward education is cognitive
psychology, not neuroscience. We discuss four specific cases in which neuroscience synergizes with other disciplines to serve
education, ranging from very general physiological aspects of human learning such as nutrition, exercise and sleep, to brain
architectures that shape the way we acquire language and reading, and neuroscience tools that increasingly allow the early
detection of cognitive deficits, especially in preverbal infants. Neuroscience methods, tools and theoretical frameworks have
broadened our understanding of the mind in a way that is highly relevant to educational practice. Although the bridgeâs cement is
still fresh, we argue why it is prime time to march over it
