Presumed role of the gravity in the establishment of the symmetrization in amphibian embryos. Response provided by the biological experimentation in space
During the early embryonic development of the amphian, several events
are presumed to be dependent on the ground gravity (egg rotation of equilibrium,
formation of the grey crescent, symmetrization, cleavage). Will development
occur normally in the absence of the gravity ? The experience FERTILE had led
to obtain in weightlessness, onboard the space station Mir, the natural
fertilization and the embryonic development of the salamander Pleurodeles
waltl, an amphibian urodele. All the embryos developed in microgravity acquired
normal bilateral symmetry. The egg rotation that occurs on earth after
fertilization is clearly not necessary in urodeles to determine the position of
symmetrical plan. The results obtained in P. waltl are in accordance with those
observed earlier in the anuran Xenopus laevis and the fish Oryzias latipes.
Poisson Oryzias latipes

Feeding and rearing techniques used for larvae of Pleurodeles waltl (urodele amphibian) onboard the MIR space station
A research group in our laboratories works on development of amphibians under microgravity conditions. Several experiments were performed in space conditions using embryos or adults of the urodele amphibian, Pleurodeles waltl (Bautz et al., 1995; Dournon et al., 1997; Husson et al., 1998; Duprat et al., 1998; Aimar et al., 2000). In 1999, for the so-called Perseus French space mission onboard the MIR space station, the project was to rear embryos and larvae of Pleurodeles waltl in microgravity conditions to study the appearance and evolution of otoconia in the inner ear (Oukda et al., 1999a and b). The present paper reports the technique used to feed and rear Pleurodeles larvae in microgravity conditions with the assistance of a cosmonaut
Animals in space. From the manned spaceflight preparation to a gravitational biological research. The experiences TORCOL - IBIS and FERTILE
Animals in space. From the manned spaceflight preparation to a
gravitational biological research. The experiences TORCOL - IBIS and FERTILE.
The animal presence in space started by a global evaluation of the spaceflight risks.
The embarked animals were at that time mammalians. Later a fundamental research in gravitational biology and in spatial radiobiology was developped. For this goal,
numerous no mammalian species were spatialized. The effects of accelerations,
microgravity and cosmic radiations were analyzed. Actually, reproduction and
development of the live organisms in space are particularly studied, with the objective
to prepare the long duration missions. In our laboratory, two experiences on the
amphibian urodele Pleurodeles waltl are prepared, the TORCOL - IBIS and the

Interleukin-10 modulates the sensitivity of peritoneal B lymphocytes to chemokines with opposite effects on stromal cell-derived factor-1 and B-lymphocyte chemoattractant.
International audienceInterleukin-10 (IL-10) is constitutively produced by peritoneal B1a lymphocytes, and stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) by mesothelial cells. Independent studies have shown that both IL-10 and SDF-1 are involved in the persistence of the peritoneal B-lymphocyte compartment. This study shows that IL-10 and SDF-1 act in synergy on peritoneal B lymphocytes. Indeed, autocrine production of IL-10 was absolutely required for all effects of SDF-1 on these cells, including increased proliferation, survival, and chemotaxis. Moreover, adding IL-10 to peritoneal B lymphocytes increased the effects of SDF-1. Neither IL-5, IL-6, nor IL-9 affected the response of peritoneal B lymphocytes to SDF-1. IL-10 was chemokinetic for peritoneal B lymphocytes, increasing their random mobility. It also potentiated the SDF-1-induced reorganization of the cytoskeleton without affecting CXCR4 gene expression by peritoneal B lymphocytes. Despite its chemokinetic properties, IL-10 abolished the migration of peritoneal B lymphocytes in response to B-lymphocyte chemoattractant (BLC), a chemokine targeting B lymphocytes to lymphoid organ follicles. The ability of B1a lymphocytes to produce IL-10 constitutively, combined with the opposite effects of this cytokine on the responses to SDF-1 and BLC, may account for the selective accumulation of B1 lymphocytes in body cavities
