Abstract

Animals in space. From the manned spaceflight preparation to a gravitational biological research. The experiences TORCOL - IBIS and FERTILE. The animal presence in space started by a global evaluation of the spaceflight risks. The embarked animals were at that time mammalians. Later a fundamental research in gravitational biology and in spatial radiobiology was developped. For this goal, numerous no mammalian species were spatialized. The effects of accelerations, microgravity and cosmic radiations were analyzed. Actually, reproduction and development of the live organisms in space are particularly studied, with the objective to prepare the long duration missions. In our laboratory, two experiences on the amphibian urodele Pleurodeles waltl are prepared, the TORCOL - IBIS and the FERTILE - MIR projectsL'envoi d'animaux dans l'espace correspondait au départ à une phase d'évaluation globale des risques liés à un vol spatial. L'expérimentation démontra alors, à partir des données biomédicales brutes obtenues, que les mammifères et l'homme pouvaient supporter les conditions extrêmes du vol. Puis se développa une recherche fondamentale en biologie gravitationnelle et en radiobiologie spatiale avec le lancement de nombreuses espèces non conventionnelles. Le but était de reconnaître et de comprendre les effets des accélérations, de la microgravité et des rayonnements cosmiques sur les organismes vivants. Actuellement, avec la préparation des missions spatiales de longue durée, les problèmes concernant la reproduction et le développement des organismes animaux dans l'espace sont particulièrement étudiés. Dans notre laboratoire, avec le modèle Pleurodeles waltl, nous préparons deux projets soutenus par le CNES : l'expérience TORCOL - IBIS pour la mission PHOTON 10 prévue en février 1995, et l'expérience FERTILE pour la mission CASSIOPEE sur la station orbitale MIR prévue en juin 199
