Introduction: Our aim was to improve understanding of nursing students’ perceptions about caring for the patient. In particular, we aim to highlight expectations and possible difficulties in providing care in students who are at the end of their studies and are approaching clinical work. Partecipants: We collected data from 72 students of a Nursing Studies University in a north region of Italy. Design: A qualitative method was use to interpret data. Materials: A vignette technique has been used: students had to write a tale inspired by the delivered picture. Results: Nursing students show a high caring orientation towards the patients and seem to be aware that this relationship elicits an emotional involvement. In order to manage with it, theoretical studies and previous practice have been considered the most important resources. On the contrary, relationships with colleagues, lack of time and patients and their families’ anxiety have been perceived as obstacles. Conclusion: Future professional nurses need some resources to enter the professional world properly and to manage the relationship with patients adequately. Our research underlines the importance of implement knowledge about emotional regulation strategies, socialization processes and team work techniques

ABSTRACT: This research note presents an empirical study conducted in a number of social cooperatives (SCoops). Democratic governance has been identified as a defining aspect of this kind of social enterprise. Using the work and organizational psychology approach, the authors studied the effects of democratic governance and supervisor support on workers’ engagement and organizational citizenship behaviors. The convenience sample technique was used for gathering the data. Data was collected with a self-administered questionnaire. The sample consisted of 258 participants from three different Scoops situated in northern Italy. Statistical analysis results suggest that worker’s perceived participation and supervisor support enhance work engagement, and subsequently, altruistic behaviors. Finally, the authors comment on the limitations of the study giving methodological suggestions for future empirical research.RESUMEN: El presente artículo presenta una investigación realizada con la colaboración de varias cooperativas sociales (SCoops).

Norm and Deviance-Seeking Personal Orientation Scale (NDPOS) Adapted to the Organisational Context

Deviance theory introduces a behavioural view on constructive and destructive deviance to explain how an individual’s intent can harm or improve organisational well-being. However, to our knowledge, no scale exists that evaluates the personal orientation aspect of deviance and normativity. This article discusses the creation of the Norm and Deviance-Seeking Personal Orientation Scale (NDPOS). To create this scale, we studied the psychometric properties of the instrument using data from French workers. NDPOS exploratory analysis indicated a 12-item scale composed of four factors: normative conformity, normative rule adequacy, deviant performance seeking, and deviant proactivity seeking. Confirmatory factor analysis corroborated the factorial structure in four sub-scales. Convergent and discriminant validity indicated that deviant dimensions were positively related to expressing voice, cognitive flexibility, and deviant behaviours, whereas normativity dimensions were negatively or not related to these behaviours. Furthermore, opposite relations between the conformity construct and the four factors were observed. Practical implications and suggestions for the development of future research on constructive deviance theory are discussed

Emotional Dissonance and Job Satisfaction: The Moderating Role of Organisational Commitment and Task Significance

Aim: Emotional dissonance resulting from nurse/patient interactions is usually considered to lead to negative outcomes, such as job dissatisfaction (Yang & Chang, 2008). Although there does exist some general support and acceptance of the positive link between emotional dissonance and job dissatisfaction, there are some inconsistencies in these findings (Pugh, Groth, & Hennig-Thurau, 2010). The aim of our study is to verify whether the relationship between emotional dissonance and job satisfaction can be influenced by organizational commitment and task significance. Method: A questionnaire was distributed to 222 nurses, working in two multidisciplinary hospitals in the Northwest region of Italy. Results and conclusion: Results provide support for the moderating role of organizational affective commitment and task significance. Organizational affective commitment and task significance can help nurses in moderating the detrimental effects of emotional dissonance on job satisfaction. DOI: 10.5901/mjss.2013.v4n13p69

Voice is an essential behaviour that can inhibit or generate processes of innovation and organisational change. To date, few measurement scales adapted to the French context and allowing to analyse this behaviour exists. This article proposes to translate the 4’factors Voice scale from Maynes and Podsakoff (2014). The translation of this scale was tested by 4 studies on different samples of 1275 French workers from various organisational backgrounds. The first studies test the reliability, internal consistency, divergent and convergent validity of the scale. Then, a gender invariance analysis tests the metric properties of the scale. The results obtained present acceptable psychometric qualities that validate the French version

Background There is growing interest in the relationships between supervisor/co-worker support and nurses’ perceived quality of care and organizational citizenship behaviours. However, few studies have investigated the effects of emotional support of supervisors and colleagues on the performance of nurses over time and the psychological mechanisms that underlie the above-mentioned relationships. Objective The aim of our study was to better understand the process promoting nurses’ perceived quality of care and organizational citizenship centred on helping others. To better understand these processes, we focused on the perceived emotional support originating from the supervisor and that from the co-workers and analysed to which extent they were, over time, related to quality of care and organizational citizenship through work engagement. Method A two-wave design was used to collect the data. Survey data was gathered from 188 nurses from two hospitals in Algeria. Mediation analyses were carried out using structural equation modelling. Results The results revealed that nurses’ work engagement mediates the relationships between quality of care, organizational citizenship behaviour and supervisor and co-workers emotional support. Conclusion Results underlined the importance of putting in place schedules to improve supervisor emotional support, co-worker emotional support and work engagement in order to improve quality of care

Work based learning: Italian adaptation of the Learning Potential of the Workplace scale (LPW)

The present study sought to translate and adapt the Learning Potential of the Workplace Scale (LPW) into the Italian language and assess its psychometric properties. A sample of 729 workers was recruited from 3 different organizations located in Italy. Three studies tested the psychometric validity of the Italian version. The first tested the LPW's structure and validity by performing confirmatory factor analyses and calculating the scale's reliabilities. The second tested LPW's convergent and divergent validities through correlation analyses. The relationship between the LPW's dimensions, HR training practices, and organizational tradition climate were investigated. Lastly, the third study analyzed the scale construct validity by using structural equation modeling. The relationship of challenging tasks and task feedback with LPW dimensions was observed. Results indicated that the Italian version was reliable, with similar psychometric properties of the original scale and, therefore, a valid instrument for assessing the learning potential of the workplace
