    Equation of state and transport processes in self--similar spheres

    We study the effect of transport processes (diffusion and free--streaming) on a collapsing spherically symmetric distribution of matter in a self--similar space--time. A very simple solution shows interesting features when it is matched with the Vaidya exterior solution. In the mixed case (diffusion and free--streaming), we find a barotropic equation of state in the stationary regime. In the diffusion approximation the gravitational potential at the surface is always constant; if we perturb the stationary state, the system is very stable, recovering the barotropic equation of state as time progresses. In the free--streaming case the self--similar evolution is stationary but with a non--barotropic equation of state.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

    Fabry Perot Halpha Observations of the Barred Spiral NGC 3367

    We report the gross properties of the velocity field of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 3367. The following values were found: inclination with respect to the plane of the sky, i=30 deg; position angle (PA) of receding semi major axis PA=51 and systemic velocity V(sys)=3032 km/s. Large velocity dispersion are observed of upt o 120 km/s in the nuclear region, of up to 70 km/s near the eastern bright sources just beyond the edge of the stellar bar where three spiral arms seem to start and in the western bright sources at about 10 kpc. Deviations from normal circular velocities are observed from all the disk but mainly from the semi circle formed by the string of south western Halpha sources.     Electromagnetic radiation produces frame dragging

    It is shown that for a generic electrovacuum spacetime, electromagnetic radiation produces vorticity of worldlines of observers in a Bondi--Sachs frame. Such an effect (and the ensuing gyroscope precession with respect to the lattice) which is a reminiscence of generation of vorticity by gravitational radiation, may be linked to the nonvanishing of components of the Poynting and the super--Poynting vectors on the planes othogonal to the vorticity vector.     FLEXIBILIZAÇÃO ESCOLAR DOS ATLETAS EM FORMAÇÃO ALOJADOS EM CENTROS DE TREINAMENTO NO FUTEBOL: UM ESTUDO NA TOCA DA RAPOSA E NA CIDADE DO GALO

    Esse estudo teve como objetivo geral compreender como se dá a conciliação entre a formação esportiva e a escolarização dos atletas alojados em centros de treinamento de clubes de futebol que oferecem acesso à educação básica. Buscou-se entender como se desenvolve a relação entre essas agências formadoras, clube e escola. Foi aplicado um questionário a 93 atletas de categorias de base alojados nos centros de treinamento do Esporte Clube Cruzeiro e do Clube Atlético Mineiro, além de quatro entrevistas semi-estruturadas com profissionais diretamente ligados à formação desses atletas, bem como uma exegese jurídica da legislação voltada para crianças e jovens. Os resultados apontaram que os alunos/atletas gozam de privilégios nas escolas oferecidas pelo clube, sejam elas escolas regulares ou integrantes da estrutura do centro de treinamento. A escola flexibiliza suas normas para os atletas diante da agenda dos clubes formadores. Constatamos, ainda, a diminuição do interesse do atleta pela escola na medida em que se aproxima a assinatura do primeiro contrato profissional. Concluiu-se que família, clube, agentes e empresários, escola e o próprio atleta, formam um sistema flexível que traduz-se em uma via facilitadora de se alcançar o objetivo maior, que é o ingresso na carreira profissional no futebol. A educação do adolescente, por esse sistema, se torna um objetivo secundário, mas não descartável

    Plasma Edge Kinetic-MHD Modeling in Tokamaks Using Kepler Workflow for Code Coupling, Data Management and Visualization

    A new predictive computer simulation tool targeting the development of the H-mode pedestal at the plasma edge in tokamaks and the triggering and dynamics of edge localized modes (ELMs) is presented in this report. This tool brings together, in a coordinated and effective manner, several first-principles physics simulation codes, stability analysis packages, and data processing and visualization tools. A Kepler workflow is used in order to carry out an edge plasma simulation that loosely couples the kinetic code, XGC0, with an ideal MHD linear stability analysis code, ELITE, and an extended MHD initial value code such as M3D or NIMROD. XGC0 includes the neoclassical ion-electron-neutral dynamics needed to simulate pedestal growth near the separatrix. The Kepler workflow processes the XGC0 simulation results into simple images that can be selected and displayed via the Dashboard, a monitoring tool implemented in AJAX allowing the scientist to track computational resources, examine running and archived jobs, and view key physics data, all within a standard Web browser. The XGC0 simulation is monitored for the conditions needed to trigger an ELM crash by periodically assessing the edge plasma pressure and current density profiles using the ELITE code. If an ELM crash is triggered, the Kepler workflow launches the M3D code on a moderate-size Opteron cluster to simulate the nonlinear ELM crash and to compute the relaxation of plasma profiles after the crash. This process is monitored through periodic outputs of plasma fluid quantities that are automatically visualized with AVS/Express and may be displayed on the Dashboard. Finally, the Kepler workflow archives all data outputs and processed images using HPSS, as well as provenance information about the software and hardware used to create the simulation. The complete process of preparing, executing and monitoring a coupled-code simulation of the edge pressure pedestal buildup and the ELM cycle using the Kepler scientific workflow system is described in this paper

    The Kinematically Measured Pattern Speeds of NGC 2523 and NGC 4245

    We have applied the Tremaine-Weinberg continuity equation method to derive the bar pattern speed in the SB(r)b galaxy NGC 2523 and the SB(r)0/a galaxy NGC 4245 using the Calcium Triplet absorption lines. These galaxies were selected because they have strong inner rings which can be used as independent tracers of the pattern speed. The pattern speed of NGC 2523 is 26.4 ±\pm 6.1 km s1^{-1} kpc1^{-1}, assuming an inclination of 49.7^{\circ} and a distance of 51.0 Mpc. The pattern speed of NGC 4245 is 75.5 ±\pm 31.3 km s1^{-1} kpc1^{-1}, assuming an inclination of 35.4^{\circ} and a distance of 12.6 Mpc. The ratio of the corotation radius to the bar radius of NGC 2523 and NGC 4245 is 1.4 ±\pm 0.3 and 1.1 ±\pm 0.5, respectively. These values place the bright inner rings near and slightly inside the corotation radius, as predicted by barred galaxy theory. Within the uncertainties, both galaxies are found to have fast bars that likely indicate dark halos of low central concentration. The photometric properties, bar strengths, and disk stabilities of both galaxies are also discussed.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal, 11 figures, 2 table
