Empathic Responses Are Reduced to Competitive but Not Non-Competitive Outgroups
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this recordIndividuals feel more empathy for those in their group (i.e. ingroup members) than those who are not (i.e. outgroup members). But empathy is not merely selective to group distinctions, rather it fluctuates according to how groups are perceived. The goal of this research was to determine whether group-based evaluations can drive biases in self-reported empathy as well as in the underlying neural activity. Participants were asked to rate a target’s physical pain while BOLD responses were recorded via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The target was either a member of the ingroup or one of two outgroups, one which was more of a rival to the ingroup than the other. Participants reported more empathy for targets experiencing painful compared to innocuous events showing bias only in favour of their ingroup. Neural responses were stronger while observing painful, compared to innocuous, events but only for targets from the ingroup or the less competitive outgroup. The difference was non-significant and trended in the opposite direction when the target was from the more competitive outgroup. This provides evidence that empathy is not merely selective to “us” vs “them” but is more nuanced by whom we refer to by “them”.This work was supported by the Defence Science Technology Labs under Grant DSTLX-1000083201Defence Science and Technology Laboratory [DSTLX-1000083201]

A Spin - 3/2 Ising Model on a Square Lattice
The spin - 3/2 Ising model on a square lattice is investigated. It is shown
that this model is reducible to an eight - vertex model on a surface in the
parameter space spanned by coupling constants J, K, L and M. It is shown that
this model is equivalent to an exactly solvable free fermion model along two
lines in the parameter space.Comment: LaTeX, 7 pages, 1 figure upon request; JETP Letters, in pres

Equation of state and transport processes in self--similar spheres
We study the effect of transport processes (diffusion and free--streaming) on
a collapsing spherically symmetric distribution of matter in a self--similar
space--time. A very simple solution shows interesting features when it is
matched with the Vaidya exterior solution. In the mixed case (diffusion and
free--streaming), we find a barotropic equation of state in the stationary
regime. In the diffusion approximation the gravitational potential at the
surface is always constant; if we perturb the stationary state, the system is
very stable, recovering the barotropic equation of state as time progresses. In
the free--streaming case the self--similar evolution is stationary but with a
non--barotropic equation of state.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Self-similar and charged spheres in the diffusion approximation
We study spherical, charged and self--similar distributions of matter in the
diffusion approximation. We propose a simple, dynamic but physically meaningful
solution. For such a solution we obtain a model in which the distribution
becomes static and changes to dust. The collapse is halted with damped mass
oscillations about the absolute value of the total charge.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
Behavior problems and prevalence of asthma symptoms among Brazilian children.
OBJECTIVE: Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood and has been designated a public health problem due to the increase in its prevalence in recent decades, the amount of health service expenditure it absorbs and an absence of consensus about its etiology. The relationships among psychosocial factors and the occurrence, symptomatology, and severity of asthma have recently been considered. There is still controversy about the association between asthma and a child's mental health, since the pathways through which this relationship is established are complex and not well researched. This study aims to investigate whether behavior problems are associated with the prevalence of asthma symptoms in a large urban center in Latin America. METHODS: It is a cross-section study of 869 children between 6 and 12 years old, residents of Salvador, Brazil. The International Study of Allergy and Asthma in Childhood (ISAAC) instrument was used to evaluate prevalence of asthma symptoms. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was employed to evaluate behavioral problems. RESULTS: 19.26% (n=212) of the children presented symptoms of asthma. 35% were classified as having clinical behavioral problems. Poisson's robust regression model demonstrated a statistically significant association between the presence of behavioral problems and asthma symptoms occurrence (PR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.10-1.85). CONCLUSION: These results suggest an association between behavioral problems and pediatric asthma, and support the inclusion of mental health care in the provision of services for asthma morbidity
