Os resultados indicam: i. The acquisition of spelling competence is a complex process, involving lexical and grammatical questions. Research, however, almost always places the spelling from an autonomous point of view and disconnected from the other components of writing. In this text, we present the relevance of the Ramos System that captures students in an ecological situation of text production in pairs, allowing access to the processes for solving orthographic problems. Collaborative writing also grants access to comments made by students during the process of textual linearization. Our study focuses on the recognition of spelling problems (SP) and the comments made regarding such problems by two 2nd grade students during the production of six invented stories. More than a quantitative analysis of the types of SP identified in the product, we were interested in making a qualitative and fine analysis of oral recognitions of SP, particularly those SP anticipated by the writers. Our results indicate that: i. Recognition motivates comments that are not always related to the identified SP; ii. Recognition and comments are related to the orthographic contents taught in the classroom; iii. Some of the recognized SP involve the articulation between different linguistic levels. These aspects can contribute for the comprehension of orthographic learning in didactic situations provided by collaborative writing.publishe

Estimating the price elasticity of water, Problem proposed by AdP - Águas de Portugal

The problem: how to estimate the price elasticity of water demand? Goal: simulate and predict the role of water demand dependence on price

Estimating the price elasticity of water

    No full text
Setting the price of water on a public distribution network taking into account only fixed and operational costs might not be sufficient. This is due to the fact that once prices are raised water demand may decrease, since consumers will either restrict their water intake or even consider alternative water suppliers. The problem is how to estimate the price elasticity of water, that is, the dependence of demand on price, so that this factor can also be taken into consideration. The idea is to focus on providing estimates of price and price elasticities for designing charging regimes, quantifying the impact of non-price factors of discretionary and non-discretionary water usage. This problem was proposed by AdP - ´Aguas de Portugal

Neutron measurements in radiotherapy: A method to correct neutron sensitive devices for parasitic photon response

    No full text
One of the major causes of secondary malignancies after radiotherapy treatments are peripheral doses, known to increase for some newer techniques (such as IMRT or VMAT). For accelerators operating above 10 MV, neutrons can represent important contribution to peripheral doses. This neutron contamination can be measured using different passive or active techniques, available in the literature. As far as active (or direct-reading) procedures are concerned, a major issue is represented by their parasitic photon sensitivity, which can significantly affect the measurement when the point of test is located near to the field-edge. This work proposes a simple method to estimate the unwanted photon contribution to these neutrons. As a relevant case study, the use of a recently neutron sensor for â\u80\u9cin-phantomâ\u80\u9d measurements in high-energy machines was considered. The method, called â\u80\u9cDual Energy Photon Subtractionâ\u80\u9d (DEPS), requires pairs of measurements performed for the same treatment, in low-energy (6 MV) and high energy (e.g. 15 MV) fields. It assumes that the peripheral photon dose (PPD) at a fixed point in a phantom, normalized to the unit photon dose at the isocenter, does not depend on the treatment energy. Measurements with ionization chamber and Monte Carlo simulations were used to evaluate the validity of this hypothesis. DEPS method was compared to already published correction methods, such as the use of neutron absorber materials. In addition to its simplicity, an advantage of DEPs procedure is that it can be applied to any radiotherapy machine

PPAR gamma expression is increased in systemic lupus erythematosus patients and represses CD40/CD40L signaling pathway

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous disease involving several immune cell types and pro-inflammatory signals, including the one triggered by binding of CD40L to the receptor CD40. Peroxisome-proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) is a transcription factor with anti-inflammatory properties. Here we investigated whether CD40 and PPAR gamma could exert opposite effects in the immune response and the possible implications for SLE. Increased PPAR gamma mRNA levels were detected by real-time PCR in patients with active SLE, compared to patients with inactive SLE PPAR gamma/GAPDH mRNA = 2.21 +/- 0.49 vs. 0.57 +/- 0.14, respectively (p < 0.05) or patients with infectious diseases and healthy subjects (p < 0.05). This finding was independent of the corticosteroid therapy. We further explored these observations in human THP1 and in SLE patient-derived macrophages, where activation of CD40 by CD40L promoted augmented PPAR gamma gene transcription compared to non-stimulated cells (PPAR gamma/GAPDH mRNA = 1.14 +/- 0.38 vs. 0.14 +/- 0.01, respectively; p < 0.05). This phenomenon occurred specifically upon CD40 activation, since lipopolysaccharide treatment did not induce a similar response. In addition, increased activity of PPAR gamma was also detected after CD40 activation, since higher PPAR gamma-dependent transcription of CD36 transcription was observed. Furthermore, CD40L-stimulated transcription of CD80 gene was elevated in cells treated with PPAR gamma-specific small interfering RNA (small interfering RNA, siRNA) compared to cells treated with CD40L alone (CD80/GAPDH mRNA = 0.11 +/- 0.04 vs. 0.05 +/- 0.02, respectively; p < 0.05), suggesting a regulatory role for PPAR gamma on the CD40/CD40L pathway. Altogether, our findings outline a novel mechanism through which PPAR gamma regulates the inflammatory signal initiated by activation of CD40, with important implications for the understanding of immunological mechanisms underlying SLE and the development of new treatment strategies.
