Spinor algebra and null solutions of the wave equation
In this paper we exploit the ideas and formalisms of twistor theory, to show
how, on Minkowski space, given a null solution of the wave equation, there are
precisely two null directions in , at least one of which is a
shear-free ray congruence

Twistor theory on a finite graph
We show how the description of a shear-free ray congruence in Minkowski space
as an evolving family of semi-conformal mappings can naturally be formulated on
a finite graph. For this, we introduce the notion of holomorphic function on a
graph. On a regular coloured graph of degree three, we recover the space-time
picture. In the spirit of twistor theory, where a light ray is the more
fundamental object from which space-time points should be derived, the line
graph, whose points are the edges of the original graph, should be considered
as the basic object. The Penrose twistor correspondence is discussed in this
context
Cross-sectional study of risky substance use by injured emergency department patients
INTRODUCTION: Survey data regarding the prevalence of risky substance use in the emergency department (ED) is not consistent. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence of risky substance use among injured ED patients based on the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST v3.0). A secondary objective was to report on the feasibility of administering the ASSIST to this population, based on the time to conduct screening. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used screening data from a randomized controlled trial. Injured ED patients completed the ASSIST on a tablet computer, and an ASSIST score was computed that indicated the need for a brief or intensive treatment intervention (risky use) for alcohol and other substances. For a subsample, data on time to complete each step of screening was recorded. RESULTS: Between July 2010 and March 2013, 5,695 patients completed the ASSIST. Most (92%) reported lifetime use of at least one substance and 51% reported current risky use of at least one substance. Mean time to complete the ASSIST was 5.4 minutes and screening was considered feasible even when paused for clinical care to proceed. CONCLUSION: Estimates of risky substance use based on the ASSIST in our large sample of injured ED patients were higher than previously reported in other studies of ED patients, possibly due to the current focus on an injured population. In addition, it was feasible to administer the ASSIST to patients in the course of their clinical care.Published versio
Christina Rossetti: Pre-Raphaelite poet
Considered by her contemporaries to be one of Victorian England\u27s greatest poets, the writings of Christina Rossetti clearly exemplify the work of a Pre-Raphaelite artist ( CR and the Visual Arts ). The publication in 1862 of Goblin Market and Other Poems represented the first literary success of the Pre-Raphaelites, although Christina herself was not a bona fide member ( CR\u27s Literary Career ). Much speculation exists as to the reason that the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Several biographers/critics postulate that some of the members refused to allow her admittance because she was female; however, an actual letter from Gabriel suggests that she was asked, but declined, in his words, because she felt it would some type of display, I believe—a sort of thing she abhors (Marsh 83)
The effect of prior upper body exercise on subsequent wingate performance
It has been reported previously that the upper body musculature is continually active during high intensity cycle ergometry. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of prior upper body exercise on subsequent Wingate (WAnT) performance. Eleven recreationally active males (20.8 ± 2.2 yrs; 77.7 ± 12.0 kg; 1.79 ± 0.04 m) completed two trials in a randomised order. In one trial participants completed 2 × 30 s WAnT tests (WAnT1 and WAnT2) with a 6 min recovery period; in the other trial, this protocol was preceded with 4 sets of biceps curls to induce localised arm fatigue. Prior upper body exercise was found to have a statistically significant detrimental effect on peak power output (PPO) during WAnT1 (P < 0.05) but no effect was observed for mean power output (MPO) (P > 0.05). Handgrip (HG) strength was also found to be significantly lower following the upper body exercise. These results demonstrate that the upper body is meaningfully involved in the generation of leg power during intense cycling
Continued Progress: Promising Evidence on Personalized Learning
The findings are grouped into four sections. The first section on student achievement finds that there were positive effects on student mathematics and reading performance and that the lowest-performing students made substantial gains relative to their peers. The second section on implementation and the perceptions of stakeholders finds that adoption of personalized learning practices varied considerably. Personalized learning practices that are direct extensions of current practice were more common, but implementation of some of the more challenging personalized learning strategies was less common. The third section relates implementation features to outcomes and identifies three elements of personalized learning that were being implemented in tandem in the schools with the largest achievement effects. Finally, the fourth section compares teachers' and students' survey responses to a national sample and finds some differences, such as teachers' greater use of practices that support competency-based learning and greater use of technology for personalization in the schools in this study with implementation data
An in Depth Look at Gonzales V. Raich: The History of Medical Marijuana and the Commerce Clause
