    Gluonic charmonium resonances at BaBar and Belle?

    We confront predictions for hybrid charmonium and other gluonic excitations in the charm region with recently observed structures in the mass range above 3 GeV. The Y(4260), if resonant, is found to agree with expectations for hybrid charmonium.     Hybrid configuration content of heavy S-wave mesons

    We use the non-relativistic expansion of QCD (NRQCD) on the lattice to study the lowest hybrid configuration contribution to the ground state of heavy S-wave mesons. Using lowest-order lattice NRQCD to create the heavy-quark propagators, we form a basis of ``unperturbed'' S-wave and hybrid states. We then apply the lowest-order coupling of the quark spin and chromomagnetic field at an intermediate time slice to create ``mixed'' correlators between the S-wave and hybrid states. From the resulting amplitudes, we extract the off-diagonal element of our two-state Hamiltonian. Diagonalizing this Hamiltonian gives us the admixture of hybrid configuration within the meson ground state. The present effort represents a continuation of previous work: the analysis has been extended to include lattices of varying spacings, source operators having better overlap with the ground states, and the pseudoscalar (along with the vector) channel. Results are presented for bottomonium (Υ\Upsilon, ηb\eta_b^{}) using three different sets of quenched lattices. We also show results for charmonium (J/ψJ/\psi, ηc\eta_c^{}) from one lattice set, although we note that the non-relativistic approximation is not expected to be very good in this case.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, version to appear in Phys Rev

    O conhecimento da dinâmica do uso e cobertura do solo é cada vez mais importante para a compreensão do espaço, do planejamento e da gestão dos recursos naturais, o que contribuipara a conservação e a sustentabilidade ambiental. O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido no município de Chimoio, com uma área de 174 km2, localizada na província de Manica, zona central de Moçambique. Abordoua dinâmica de uso e cobertura do solo, utilizando dados multi-temporais de imagens geradas por satélite LANDSAT 5 e 8, entre os anos de 2003, 2008 e 2014. O uso dasimagens orbitais permitiu mapear e quantificar as classes dos usos e a cobertura do solo predominante, o que evidenciou as mudanças de uso e cobertura que ocorreram no período. Os resultados demonstraram fortestendências de crescimento de áreas habitacionais e de redução de superfícies com cobertura vegetal, ambos motivados pelo crescimentopopulacional e pela expansão das atividades produtivas.Diante desses resultados, apresenta-se uma proposta de planejamento urbano de uso e ocupação de solo baseado nas características físicas naturais e nas potencialidades socioeconômicas,como resposta eficaz e necessária aos impactos ambientais causados pelo usoinadequado do solo

    Costs of screening children for hearing disorders and delivery of hearing aids in China

School-based screening programs in combination with the delivery of hearing aids can alleviate this situation, but the costs of such programs are unknown. AIM: To evaluate the costs of a school-based screening program for hearing disorders, among approximately 216,000 school children, and the delivery of hearing aids to 206 children at three different care levels in China. METHODS: In a prospective study design, screening and hearing aid delivery costs were estimated on the basis of program records and an empirical assessment of health personnel time input. Household costs for seeking and undergoing hearing health care were collected with a questionnaire, administered to the parents of the child. Data were collected at three study sites representing primary, secondary and tertiary care levels. RESULTS: Total screening and hearing aid delivery costs ranged between RMB70,000 (US9,000)andRMB133,000(US9,000) and RMB133,000 (US17,000) in the three study sites. Health care cost per child fitted ranged from RMB5,900 (US760)attheprimarycarelevel,RMB7,200(US760) at the primary care level, RMB7,200 (US940) at the secondary care level, to RMB8,600 (US1,120)atthetertiarycarelevel.Householdcostswereonlyasmallfractionoftheoverallcosts.CostperchildfittedrangedbetweenRMB1,608andRMB2,812(US1,120) at the tertiary care level. Household costs were only a small fraction of the overall costs. Cost per child fitted ranged between RMB1,608 and RMB2,812 (US209-US$365), depending on perspective of analysis and study site. The program was always least costly in the primary care setting. CONCLUSION: Hearing screening and the delivery of hearing aids in China is least costly in a primary care setting. Important questions remain concerning its implementation

    Liposomes in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine

    Liposomes are vesicular structures made of lipids that are formed in aqueous solutions. Structurally, they resemble the lipid membrane of living cells. Therefore, they have been widely investigated, since the 1960s, as models to study the cell membrane, and as carriers for protection and/or delivery of bioactive agents. They have been used in different areas of research including vaccines, imaging, applications in cosmetics and tissue engineering. Tissue engineering is defined as a strategy for promoting the regeneration of tissues for the human body. This strategy may involve the coordinated application of defined cell types with structured biomaterial scaffolds to produce living structures. To create a new tissue, based on this strategy, a controlled stimulation of cultured cells is needed, through a systematic combination of bioactive agents and mechanical signals.     Family Relationship, Water Contact and Occurrence of Buruli Ulcer in Benin

    Mycobacterium ulcerans disease (Buruli ulcer) is the most widespread mycobacterial disease in the world after leprosy and tuberculosis. How M. ulcerans is introduced into the skin of humans remains unclear, but it appears that individuals living in the same environment may have different susceptibilities. This case control study aims to determine whether frequent contacts with natural water sources, family relationship or the practice of consanguineous marriages are associated with the occurrence of Buruli ulcer (BU). The study involved 416 participants, of which 104 BU-confirmed cases and 312 age, gender and village of residence matched controls (persons who had no signs or symptoms of active or inactive BU). The results confirmed that contact with natural water sources is a risk factor. Furthermore, it suggests that a combination of genetic factors may constitute risk factors for the development of BU, possibly by influencing the type of immune response in the individual, and, consequently, the development of BU infection per se and its different clinical forms. These findings may be of major therapeutic interest
