Elliptic flow of the dilute Fermi gas: From kinetics to hydrodynamics
We use the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation to study
the expansion of a dilute Fermi gas at unitarity. We focus, in particular, on
the approach to the hydrodynamic limit. Our main finding are: i) In the regime
that has been studied experimentally hydrodynamic effects beyond the
Navier-Stokes approximation are small, ii) mean field corrections to the
Boltzmann equation are not important, iii) experimental data imply that
freezeout occurs very late, that means that the relaxation time remains smaller
than the expansion time during the entire evolution of the system, iv) the
experimental results also imply that the bulk viscosity is significantly
smaller than the shear viscosity of the system.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
The roles of conceptual device models and user goals in avoiding device initialization errors
While mistakes, and approaches to design and training that reduce them, have been studied extensively, relatively little work in HCI studies 'slip' errors, which occur when one intends to do a certain action during a skilled task but unintentionally does another. In this article we examine approaches to training that might reduce the occurrence of a slip error referred to as a 'device initialization error'. This error occurs when skilled users of a device forget to perform some initialization action, such as positioning the cursor in a text entry box or setting the device into the correct mode, before entering data or performing some other significant activity. We report on an experiment studying the effects of two training interventions on this error, which aim to manipulate the salience of the error-prone action without making any physical changes to the device. In the first intervention participants were given a particular conceptual model of the device's operation, to evaluate whether having an improved understanding of the effect of each action would lead to fewer errors. In the second, participants were given a new device operation goal requiring them to 'test' the device, to evaluate whether attending to the outcome of initialization actions would lead to fewer errors. Only participants who were asked to 'test' the device and also given enhanced instructions to enter dummy data after completing initialization actions showed a statistically significant improvement in performance. Post-test interviews and evidence from existing literature suggest that when participants forgot the initialization step it was because they were attending to the subsequent data entry steps. Beam-Energy and System-Size Dependence of Dynamical Net Charge Fluctuations
We present measurements of net charge fluctuations in collisions at
19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV, collisions at
62.4, 200 GeV, and collisions at 200
GeV using the net charge dynamical fluctuations measure . The
dynamical fluctuations are non-zero at all energies and exhibit a rather modest
dependence on beam energy. We find that at a given energy and collision system,
net charge dynamical fluctuations violate scaling, but display
approximate scaling. We observe strong dependence of dynamical

Effects of inhalation of Freon 113 on laboratory animals
Four monkeys, 8 dogs, 40 mice, and 50 rats were exposed continuously to 2000 ppm Freon 113 in a Thomas Dome for 14 days. This exposure produced no mortalities nor adverse symptomology. There were no significant alterations in hematological values, clinical chemistries, electroencephalographic findings, body weights, or organ to body weight ratios. The effect of 2% Freon 113 on nicotinic transmission through the stellate ganglion of the spinal dog was also evaluated. The exposure induced a reduction in nicotinic transmission comparable to 2% halothane
Investigation of spray dispersion and particulate formation in diesel fuel flames
An experimental study of electrostatical atomized and dispersed diesel fuel jets was conducted at various back pressures to 40 atm. A new electrostatic injection technique was utilized to generate continuous, stable fuel sprays at charge densities of 1.5 to 2.0 C/m3 of fluid at one atm, and about 1.0 C/m3 at 40 atm. Flowrates were varied from 0.5 to 2.5 ml/s and electric potentials to -18 kV. Visual observations showed that significant enhanced dispersion of charged fuel jets occurred at high back pressures compared to aerodynamic breakup and dispersion. The average drop size was about the same as the spray triode orifice diameter, and was between the Kelly theory and the Rayleigh limit. The ignition tests, done only at one atm, indicated stable combustion of the electrostatically dispersed fuel jets
Stopping and Baryon Transport in Heavy Ion Reactions
In this report I will give an experimental overview on nuclear stopping in
hadron collisions, and relate observations to understanding of baryon
transport. Baryon number transport is not only evidenced via net-proton
distributions but also by the enhancement of strange baryons near mid-rapidity.
Although the focus is on high-energy data obtained from pp and heavy ions from
RHIC, relevant data from SPS and ISR will be considered. A discussion how the
available data at higher energy relates and gives information on baryon

Specifying the Caltech asynchronous microprocessor
The action systems framework for modelling parallel programs is used to formally specify a microprocessor. First the microprocessor is specified as a sequential program. The sequential specification is then decomposed and refined into a concurrent program using correctness-preserving program transformations. Previously this microprocessor has been specified at Caltech, where an asynchronous circuit for the microprocessor was derived from the specification. We propose a specification strategy that is based on the idea of spatial decomposition of the program variable space
Simultaneous observation of high order multiple quantum coherences at ultralow magnetic fields
We present a method for the simultaneous observation of heteronuclear
multi-quantum coherences (up to the 3rd order), which give an additional degree
of freedom for ultralow magnetic field (ULF) MR experiments, where the chemical
shift is negligible. The nonequilibrium spin state is generated by Signal
Amplification By Reversible Exchange (SABRE) and detected at ULF with
SQUID-based NMR. We compare the results obtained by the heteronuclei Correlated
SpectroscopY (COSY) with a Flip Angle FOurier Series (FAFOS) method. COSY
allows a quantitative analysis of homo- and heteronuclei quantum coherences
Caudal cervical vertebral morphological variation is not associated with clinical signs in Warmblood horses
Background Variation in equine caudal cervical spine morphology at C6 and C7 has high prevalence in Warmblood horses and is suspected to be associated with pain in a large mixed-breed group of horses. At present no data exist on the relationship between radiographic phenotype and clinical presentation in Warmblood horses in a case-control study. Objectives To establish the frequency of radiographically visible morphologic variation in a large group of Warmblood horses with clinical signs and compare this with a group without clinical signs. We hypothesised that occurrence of morphologic variation in the case group would not differ from the control group, indicating there is no association between clinical signs and morphologic variation. Study design Retrospective case-control. Methods Radiographic presence or absence of morphologic variation of cervical vertebrae C6 and C7 was recorded in case (n = 245) and control horses (n = 132). Case and control groups were compared by univariable Pearson's Chi-square and multivariable logistic regression for measurement variables age, sex, breed, degenerative joint disease and morphologic variation at C6 and C7. Odds ratio and confidence intervals were obtained. A P <= 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Morphologic variation at C6 and C7 (n = 108/377 = 28.6%; Cases 58/245 = 23.7%; Control 50/132 = 38%) was less frequent in horses with clinical signs in univariable testing (OR 0.48, 95% CI 0.3-0.8, P = 0.001). Age, sex, breed and degenerative joint disease were not retained in the final multivariable logistic regression step whereas morphologic variation remained significantly less present in horses with clinical signs. Main limitations Possible demographic differences between equine clinics. Conclusions Morphologic variation in the caudal cervical spine was detected more frequently in horses without clinical signs. Therefore, radiographic presence of such variation does not necessarily implicate the presence of clinical signs
Bifurcation Phenomena in Two-Dimensional Piecewise Smooth Discontinuous Maps
In recent years the theory of border collision bifurcations has been
developed for piecewise smooth maps that are continuous across the border, and
has been successfully applied to explain nonsmooth bifurcation phenomena in
physical systems. However, many switching dynamical systems have been found to
yield two-dimensional piecewise smooth maps that are discontinuous across the
border. The theory for understanding the bifurcation phenomena in such systems
is not available yet. In this paper we present the first approach to the
problem of analysing and classifying the bifurcation phenomena in
two-dimensional discontinuous maps, based on a piecewise linear approximation
in the neighborhood of the border. We explain the bifurcations occurring in the
static VAR compensator used in electrical power systems, using the theory
developed in this paper. This theory may be applied similarly to other systems
that yield two-dimensional discontinuous maps
