    Electroactive biofilms: new means for electrochemistry

    This work demonstrates that electrochemical reactions can be catalysed by the natural biofilms that form on electrode surfaces dipping into drinking water or compost. In drinking water, oxygen reduction was monitored with stainless steel ultra-microelectrodes under constant potential electrolysis at )0.30 V/SCE for 13 days. 16 independent experiments were conducted in drinking water, either pure or with the addition of acetate or dextrose. In most cases, the current increased and reached 1.5–9.5 times the initial current. The current increase was attributed to biofilm forming on the electrode in a similar way to that has been observed in seawater. Epifluorescence microscopy showed that the bacteria size and the biofilm morphology depended on the nutrients added, but no quantitative correlation between biofilm morphology and current was established. In compost, the oxidation process was investigated using a titanium based electrode under constant polarisation in the range 0.10–0.70 V/SCE. It was demonstrated that the indigenous micro-organisms were responsible for the current increase observed after a few days, up to 60 mA m)2. Adding 10 mM acetate to the compost amplified the current density to 145 mA m)2 at 0.50 V/SCE. The study suggests that many natural environments, other than marine sediments, waste waters and seawaters that have been predominantly investigated until now, may be able to produce electrochemically active biofilm

    Children in the North are more likely to live in poverty than those in the rest of England – and increasingly so. Poverty is the lead driver of inequalities between children in the North and their counterparts in the rest of the country, leading to worse physical and mental health outcomes, educational attainment, and lower lifelong economic productivity. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this situation worse. Although the full impact is not yet known, modelling suggests that, without intervention, the outlook is bleak. To address the North-South productivity gap we must tackle the stark inequalities evidenced in this report, put in place a child-first place-based recovery plan, and enable the children of the North to fulfil their potential

    Football: a counterpoint to the procession of pain on the Western Front, 1914-1918?

    In this article, three artworks of the First World War containing images of recreational football are analysed. These three images, In the Wings of the Theatre of War, Artillery Men at Football and Gassed, span the war from its beginning to its conclusion and are discussed in relationship to the development of recreational football in the front-line area, the evolving policies of censorship and propaganda and in consideration of the national mood in Britain. The paper shows how football went from being a spontaneous and improvised pastime in the early stages of the war to a well organized entertainment by war’s end. The images demonstrate how the war was portrayed as a temporary affair by a confident nation in 1914 to a more resigned acceptance of a semi-permanent event to be endured by 1918; however, all three artworks show that the sporting spirit, and hence the fighting spirit, of the British soldier was intact

    The evolution of universe in Brans-Dicke (BD) theory is discussed in this paper. Considering a parameterized scenario for BD scalar field ϕ=ϕ0aα\phi=\phi_{0}a^{\alpha} which plays the role of gravitational "constant" GG, we apply the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to investigate a global constraints on BD theory with a self-interacting potential according to the current observational data: Union2 dataset of type supernovae Ia (SNIa), high-redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) data, observational Hubble data (OHD), the cluster X-ray gas mass fraction, the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. It is shown that an expanded universe from deceleration to acceleration is given in this theory, and the constraint results of dimensionless matter density Ω0m\Omega_{0m} and parameter α\alpha are, Ω0m=0.286−0.039−0.047+0.037+0.050\Omega_{0m}=0.286^{+0.037+0.050}_{-0.039-0.047} and α=0.0046−0.0171−0.0206+0.0149+0.0171\alpha=0.0046^{+0.0149+0.0171}_{-0.0171-0.0206} which is consistent with the result of current experiment exploration, âˆŁÎ±âˆŁâ‰€0.132124\mid\alpha\mid \leq 0.132124. In addition, we use the geometrical diagnostic method, jerk parameter jj, to distinguish the BD theory and cosmological constant model in Einstein's theory of general relativity.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

    Primordial power spectrum from WMAP

    The observed angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy, ClC_l, is a convolution of a cosmological radiative transport kernel with an assumed primordial power spectrum of inhomogeneities. Exquisite measurements of ClC_l over a wide range of multipoles from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) has opened up the possibility to deconvolve the primordial power spectrum for a given set of cosmological parameters (base model). We implement an improved (error sensitive) Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm on the measured angular power spectrum from WMAP assuming a concordance cosmological model. The most prominent feature of the recovered P(k)P(k) is a sharp, infra-red cut off on the horizon scale. The resultant ClC_l spectrum using the recovered spectrum has a likelihood far better than a scale invariant, or, `best fit' scale free spectra (Δln⁡L=25\Delta\ln{\cal L}=25 {\it w.r.t.} Harrison Zeldovich, and, Δln⁡L=11\Delta\ln{\cal L}=11 {\it w.r.t.} power law with ns=0.95n_s=0.95). The recovered P(k)P(k) has a localized excess just below the cut-off which leads to great improvement of likelihood over the simple monotonic forms of model infra-red cut-off spectra considered in the post WMAP literature. The recovered P(k)P(k), in particular, the form of infra-red cut-off is robust to small changes in the cosmological parameters. We show that remarkably similar form of infra-red cutoff is known to arise in very reasonable extensions and refinements of the predictions from simple inflationary scenarios. Our method can be extended to other cosmological observations such as the measured matter power spectrum and, in particular, the much awaited polarization spectrum from WMAP.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, uses Revtex4, Matches version accepted to Phys.
