Detection and prevention of financial abuse against elders

by/3.0/legalcode.Purpose â This paper reports on banking and finance professionals' decision making in the context of elder financial abuse. The aim was to identify the case features that influence when abuse is identified and when action is taken.
Design/methodology/approach â Banking and finance professionals (n=70) were shown 35 financial abuse case scenarios and were asked to judge how certain they were that the older person was being abused and the likelihood of taking action.
Findings â Three case features significantly influenced certainty of financial abuse: the nature of the financial problem presented, the older person's level of mental capacity and who was in charge of the client's money. In cases where the older person was more confused and forgetful, there was increased suspicion that financial abuse was taking place. Finance professionals were less certain that financial abuse was occurring if the older person was in charge of his or her own finances.
Originality/value â The research findings have been used to develop freely available online training resources to promote professionals' decision making capacity (www.elderfinancialabuse.co.uk). A Topological Study of Contextuality and Modality in Quantum Mechanics
Kochen-Specker theorem rules out the non-contextual assignment of values to
physical magnitudes. Here we enrich the usual orthomodular structure of quantum
mechanical propositions with modal operators. This enlargement allows to refer
consistently to actual and possible properties of the system. By means of a
topological argument, more precisely in terms of the existence of sections of
sheaves, we give an extended version of Kochen-Specker theorem over this new
structure. This allows us to prove that contextuality remains a central feature

Can Everett be Interpreted Without Extravaganza?
Everett's relative states interpretation of quantum mechanics has met with
problems related to probability, the preferred basis, and multiplicity. The
third theme, I argue, is the most important one. It has led to developments of
the original approach into many-worlds, many-minds, and decoherence-based
approaches. The latter especially have been advocated in recent years, in an
effort to understand multiplicity without resorting to what is often perceived
as extravagant constructions. Drawing from and adding to arguments of others, I
show that proponents of decoherence-based approaches have not yet succeeded in

Reichenbach's Common Cause Principle in Algebraic Quantum Field Theory with Locally Finite Degrees of Freedom
In the paper it will be shown that Reichenbach's Weak Common Cause Principle
is not valid in algebraic quantum field theory with locally finite degrees of
freedom in general. Namely, for any pair of projections A and B supported in
spacelike separated double cones O(a) and O(b), respectively, a correlating
state can be given for which there is no nontrivial common cause (system)
located in the union of the backward light cones of O(a) and O(b) and commuting
with the both A and B. Since noncommuting common cause solutions are presented
in these states the abandonment of commutativity can modulate this result:

Is symmetry identity?
Wigner found unreasonable the "effectiveness of mathematics in the natural
sciences". But if the mathematics we use to describe nature is simply a coded
expression of our experience then its effectiveness is quite reasonable. Its
effectiveness is built into its design. We consider group theory, the logic of
symmetry. We examine the premise that symmetry is identity; that group theory
encodes our experience of identification. To decide whether group theory
describes the world in such an elemental way we catalogue the detailed
correspondence between elements of the physical world and elements of the
formalism. Providing an unequivocal match between concept and mathematical
statement completes the case. It makes effectiveness appear reasonable. The
case that symmetry is identity is a strong one but it is not complete. The
further validation required suggests that unexpected entities might be
describable by the irreducible representations of group theory
