Restoring the sting to metric preheating

    Get PDF
The relative growth of field and metric perturbations during preheating is sensitive to initial conditions set in the preceding inflationary phase. Recent work suggests this may protect super-Hubble metric perturbations from resonant amplification during preheating. We show that this possibility is fragile and sensitive to the specific form of the interactions between the inflaton and other fields. The suppression is naturally absent in two classes of preheating in which either (1) the vacua of the non-inflaton fields during inflation are deformed away from the origin, or (2) the effective masses of non-inflaton fields during inflation are small but during preheating are large. Unlike the simple toy model of a g2ϕ2χ2g^2 \phi^2 \chi^2 coupling, most realistic particle physics models contain these other features. Moreover, they generically lead to both adiabatic and isocurvature modes and non-Gaussian scars on super-Hubble scales. Large-scale coherent magnetic fields may also appear naturally.Comment: 6 pages, 3 ps figures, RevTex, revised discussion of backreaction and new figure. To appear Phys. Rev. D (Rapid Communication

The Exact MSSM Spectrum from String Theory

We show the existence of realistic vacua in string theory whose observable sector has exactly the matter content of the MSSM. This is achieved by compactifying the E_8 x E_8 heterotic superstring on a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold with an SU(4) gauge instanton and a Z_3 x Z_3 Wilson line. Specifically, the observable sector is N=1 supersymmetric with gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y x U(1)_{B-L}, three families of quarks and leptons, each family with a right-handed neutrino, and one Higgs-Higgs conjugate pair. Importantly, there are no extra vector-like pairs and no exotic matter in the zero mode spectrum. There are, in addition, 6 geometric moduli and 13 gauge instanton moduli in the observable sector. The holomorphic SU(4) vector bundle of the observable sector is slope-stable.Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX; v2: Hidden sector is unstable, symbol typesetting error corrected, clarifications and references added; v3: New discussion of hidden secto

Primordial black hole production due to preheating

    Get PDF
During the preheating process at the end of inflation the amplification of field fluctuations can lead to the amplification of curvature perturbations. If the curvature perturbations on small scales are sufficiently large, primordial black holes (PBHs) will be overproduced. In this paper we study PBH production in the two-field preheating model with quadratic inflaton potential. We show that for many values of the inflaton mass m, and coupling g, small scale perturbations will be amplified sufficiently, before backreaction can shut off preheating, so that PBHs will be overproduced during the subsequent radiation dominated era.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps figures. Supersymmetry Changing Bubbles in String Theory

    Get PDF
We give examples of string compactifications to 4d Minkowski space with different amounts of supersymmetry that can be connected by spherical domain walls. The tension of these domain walls is tunably lower than the 4d Planck scale. The ``stringy'' description of these walls is known in terms of certain configurations of wrapped Dirichlet and NS branes. This construction allows us to connect a variety of vacua with 4d N=4,3,2,1 supersymmetry.Comment: 11 pages, harvmac, no figures, reference added, minor correction

Constraining the primordial spectrum of metric perturbations from gravitino and moduli production

    Get PDF
We consider the production of gravitinos and moduli fields from quantum vacuum fluctuations induced by the presence of scalar metric perturbations at the end of inflation. We obtain the corresponding occupation numbers, up to first order in perturbation theory, in terms of the power spectrum of the metric perturbations. We compute the limits imposed by nucleosynthesis on the spectral index nsn_s for different models with constant nsn_s. The results show that, in certain cases, such limits can be as strong as ns<1.12n_s<1.12, which is more stringent than those coming from primordial black hole production.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 5 figures. Out-of-equilibrium evolution of scalar fields in FRW cosmology: renormalization and numerical simulations

    Get PDF
We present a renormalized computational framework for the evolution of a self-interacting scalar field (inflaton) and its quantum fluctuations in an FRW background geometry. We include a coupling of the field to the Ricci scalar with a general coupling parameter Îľ\xi. We take into account the classical and quantum back reactions, i.e., we consider the the dynamical evolution of the cosmic scale factor. We perform, in the one-loop and in the large-N approximation, the renormalization of the equation of motion for the inflaton field, and of its energy momentum tensor. Our formalism is based on a perturbative expansion for the mode functions, and uses dimensional regularization. The renormalization procedure is manifestly covariant and the counter terms are independent of the initial state. Some shortcomings in the renormalization of the energy-momentum tensor in an earlier publication are corrected. We avoid the occurence of initial singularities by constructing a suitable class of initial states. The formalism is implemented numerically and we present some results for the evolution in the post-inflationary preheating era.Comment: 44 pages, uses latexsym, 6 pages with 11 figures in a .ps fil

Jet Tomography in the Forward Direction at RHIC

Hadron production at high-pTp_T displays a strong suppression pattern in a wide rapidity region in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies. This finding indicates the presence of strong final state effects for both transversally and longitudinally traveling partons, namely induced energy loss. We have developed a perturbative QCD based model to describe hadron production in pppp collision, which can be combined with the Glauber -- Gribov model to describe hadron production in heavy ion collisions. Investigating AuAuAuAu and CuCuCuCu collisions at energy s=200\sqrt{s}=200 AAGeV at mid-rapidity, we find the opacity of the strongly interacting hot matter to be proportional to the participant nucleon number. Considering forward rapidities, the suppression pattern indicates the formation of a longitudinally contracted dense deconfined zone in central heavy ion collisions. We determine parameters for the initial geometry from the existing data.Comment: 6 pages for Hot Quarks '06 Conferenc

    N=3 Warped Compactifications

Orientifolds with three-form flux provide some of the simplest string examples of warped compactification. In this paper we show that some models of this type have the unusual feature of D=4, N=3 spacetime supersymmetry. We discuss their construction and low energy physics. Although the local form of the moduli space is fully determined by supersymmetry, to find its global form requires a careful study of the BPS spectrum.Comment: 27 pages, v2: 32pp., RevTeX4, fixed factors, slightly improved sections 3D and 4B, v3: added referenc

From Big Crunch to Big Bang

    Get PDF
We consider conditions under which a universe contracting towards a big crunch can make a transition to an expanding big bang universe. A promising example is 11-dimensional M-theory in which the eleventh dimension collapses, bounces, and re-expands. At the bounce, the model can reduce to a weakly coupled heterotic string theory and, we conjecture, it may be possible to follow the transition from contraction to expansion. The possibility opens the door to new classes of cosmological models. For example, we discuss how it suggests a major simplification and modification of the recently proposed ekpyrotic scenario.Comment: 16 pages, compressed and RevTex file, including three postscript figure files.
