Contact mechanics with adhesion: Interfacial separation and contact area
We study the adhesive contact between elastic solids with randomly rough,
self affine fractal surfaces. We present molecular dynamics (MD) simulation
results for the interfacial stress distribution and the wall-wall separation.
We compare the MD results for the relative contact area and the average
interfacial separation, with the prediction of the contact mechanics theory of
Persson. We find good agreement between theory and the simulation results. We
apply the theory to the system studied by Benz et al. involving polymer in
contact with polymer, but in this case the adhesion gives only a small
modification of the interfacial separation as a function of the squeezing
pressure.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Imperfection Information, Optimal Monetary Policy and Informational Consistency
This paper examines the implications of imperfect information (II) for optimal monetary policy with a consistent set of informational assumptions for the modeller and the private sector an assumption we term the informational consistency. We use an estimated simple NK model from Levine et al. (2012), where the assumption of symmetric II significantly improves the fit of the model to US data to assess the welfare costs of II under commitment, discretion and simple Taylor-type rules. Our main results are: first, common to all information sets we find significant welfare gains from commitment only with a zero-lower bound constraint on the interest rate. Second, optimized rules take the form of a price level rule, or something very close across all information cases. Third, the combination of limited information and a lack of commitment can be particularly serious for welfare. At the same time we find that II with lags introduces a ātying ones handsā effect on the policymaker that may improve welfare under discretion. Finally, the impulse response functions under our most extreme imperfect information assumption (output and inflation observed with a two-quarter delay) exhibit hump-shaped behaviour and the fiscal multiplier is significantly enhanced in this case

Reaction Mechanisms for Long-Life Rechargeable Zn/MnO 2 Batteries
Rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) are very promising for large-scale grid energy storage applications owing to their low cost, environmentally benign constituents, excellent safety, and relatively high energy density. Their usage, however, is largely hampered by the fast capacity fade. The complexity of the reactions has resulted in long-standing ambiguities of the chemical pathways of Zn/MnO 2 system. In this study, we find that both H + /Zn 2+ intercalation and conversion reactions occur at different voltages and that the rapid capacity fading can clearly be ascribed to the rate-limiting and irreversible conversion reactions at a lower voltage. By limiting the irreversible conversion reactions at Ć¢1.26 V, we successfully demonstrate ultrahigh power and long life that are superior to most of the reported ZIBs or even some lithium-ion batteries
Fragmentation or Recombination at High p_T?
All hadronization processes, including fragmentation, are shown to proceed
through recombination. The shower partons in a jet turn out to play an
important role in describing the p_T spectra of hadrons produced in heavy-ion
collisions. Due to the recombination of the shower partons with the soft
thermal partons, the structure of jets produced in AA collisions is not the
same as that of jets produced in pp collisions.Comment: Talk given at Quark Matter 200
Division and the Giambelli Identity
Given two polynomials f(x) and g(x), we extend the formula expressing the
remainder in terms of the roots of these two polynomials to the case where f(x)
is a Laurent polynomial. This allows us to give new expressions of a Schur
function, which generalize the Giambelli identity.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur
