Fluctuations of the Casimir-Polder force between an atom and a conducting wall
We consider the quantum fluctuations of the Casimir-Polder force between a
neutral atom and a perfectly conducting wall in the ground state of the system.
In order to obtain the atom-wall force fluctuation we first define an operator
directly associated to the force experienced by the atom considered as a
polarizable body in an electromagnetic field, and we use a time-averaged force
operator in order to avoid ultraviolet divergences appearing in the fluctuation
of the force. This time-averaged force operator takes into account that any
measurement involves a finite time. We also calculate the Casimir-Polder force
fluctuation for an atom between two conducting walls. Experimental
observability of these Casimir-Polder force fluctuations is also discussed, as
well as the dependence of the relative force fluctuation on the duration of the

Elliptic Flow, Initial Eccentricity and Elliptic Flow fluctuations in Heavy Ion Collisions at RHIC
We present measurements of elliptic flow and event-by-event fluctuations
established by the PHOBOS experiment. Elliptic flow scaled by participant
eccentricity is found to be similar for both systems when collisions with the
same number of participants or the same particle area density are compared. The
agreement of elliptic flow between Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions provides evidence
that the matter is created in the initial stage of relativistic heavy ion
collisions with transverse granularity similar to that of the participant
nucleons. The event-by-event fluctuation results reveal that the initial
collision geometry is translated into the final state azimuthal particle
distribution, leading to an event-by-event proportionality between the observed

Saddle Points and Stark Ladders: Exact Calculations of Exciton Spectra in Superlattices
A new, exact method for calculating excitonic absorption in superlattices is
described. It is used to obtain high resolution spectra showing the saddle
point exciton feature near the top of the miniband. The evolution of this
feature is followed through a series of structures with increasing miniband
width. The Stark ladder of peaks produced by an axial electric field is
investigated, and it is shown that for weak fields the line shapes are strongly
modified by coupling to continuum states, taking the form of Fano resonances.
The calculated spectra, when suitably broadened, are found to be in good

Possible Local Spiral Counterparts to Compact Blue Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift
We identify nearby disk galaxies with optical structural parameters similar
to those of intermediate-redshift compact blue galaxies. By comparing HI and
optical emission-line widths, we show that the optical widths substantially
underestimate the true kinematic widths of the local galaxies. By analogy,
optical emission-line widths may underrepresent the masses of intermediate-z
compact objects. For the nearby galaxies, the compact blue morphology is the
result of tidally-triggered central star formation: we argue that interactions

Regulated InositolâRequiring Protein 1âDependent Decay as a Mechanism of Corin RNA and Protein Deficiency in Advanced Human Systolic Heart Failure
BACKGROUND: The compensatory actions of the endogenous natriuretic peptide system require adequate processing of natriuretic peptide proâhormones into biologically active, carboxylâterminal fragments. Natriuretic peptide proâpeptide processing is accomplished by corin, a transmembrane serine protease expressed by cardiomyocytes. Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) processing is inadequate in advanced heart failure and is independently associated with adverse outcomes; however, the molecular mechanisms causing impaired BNP processing are not understood. We hypothesized that the development of endoplasmic reticulum stress in cardiomyocytes in advanced heart failure triggers inositolârequiring protein 1 (IRE1)âdependent corin mRNA decay, which would favor a molecular substrate favoring impaired natriuretic peptide proâpeptide processing. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two independent samples of hearts obtained from patients with advanced heart failure at transplant demonstrated that corin RNA was reduced as Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP)/BNP RNA increased. Increases in spliced Xâbox protein 1, a marker for IRE1âendoribonuclease activity, were associated with decreased corin RNA. Moreover, â50% of the hearts demonstrated significant reductions in corin RNA and protein as compared to the nonfailing control sample. In vitro experiments demonstrated that induction of endoplasmic reticulum stress in cultured cardiomyocytes with thapsigargin activated IRE1s endoribonuclease activity and timeâdependent reductions in corin mRNA. In HLâ1 cells, overexpression of IRE1 activated IRE1 endoribonuclease activity and caused corin mRNA decay, whereas IRE1âRNA interference with shRNA attenuated corin mRNA decay after induction of endoplasmic reticulum stress with thapsigargin. Preâtreatment of cells with Actinomycin D to inhibit transcription did not alter the magnitude or time course of thapsigarginâinduced corin mRNA decline, supporting the hypothesis that this was the result of IRE1âmediated corin mRNA degradation. CONCLUSIONS: These data support the hypothesis that endoplasmic reticulum stressâmediated, IRE1âdependent targeted corin mRNA decay is a mechanism leading to corin mRNA resulting in corresponding corin protein deficiency may contribute to the pathophysiology of impaired natriuretic peptide proâhormone processing in humans processing in humans with advanced systolic heart failure
Possibilities for pedagogy in Further Education: Harnessing the abundance of literacy
In this report, it is argued that the most salient factor in the contemporary communicative landscape is the sheer abundance and diversity of possibilities for literacy, and that the extent and nature of students' communicative resources is a central issue in education. The text outlines the conceptual underpinnings of the Literacies for Learning in Further Education project in a social view of literacy, and the associated research design, methodology and analytical framework. It elaborates on the notion of the abundance of literacies in students' everyday lives, and on the potential for harnessing these as resources for the enhancement of learning. It provides case studies of changes in practice that have been undertaken by further education staff in order to draw upon students' everyday literacy practices on Travel and Tourism and Multimedia courses. It ends with some of the broad implications for conceptualising learning that arise from researching through the lens of literacy practices
