    Stabilization of a Tailings Dam by De-Watering

    The failure of the outer slope of one of the paddocks of a tailings dam, resulted in a significant decrease in the area available for tailings deposition. Overloading of the remaining five paddocks resulted. To maintain the stability of the existing dam whilst construction of new disposal facilities was in progress, three techniques were investigated; horizontal, push-in drains at the dam toe, a rock buttress around the operational paddocks, and vertical de-watering wells installed on the first terrace, or ‘step-back’ of the dam. De-watering wells proved most effective, and 165 wells were installed. A monitoring programme included regular determination of the water level in each well, and the installation of piezometers at selected locations around the dam. These observations were used to optimise the use of the five remaining paddocks, thus ensuring stability of the dam during the transfer of deposition operations to two new tailings dams

    Investigating the impact of cleaning treatments on polystyrene using SEM, AFM and ToF–SIMS

    Concerns about the stability of plastic artefacts are commonly expressed when discussing the conservation of modern materials. One of the factors affecting the degradation of plastics is the presence of soil, degradation products and other contaminants on the surface. Cleaning treatments for plastic artefacts may therefore increase their stability as well as improving their visual appearance. While past studies have shown that dry, aqueous and solvent cleaning can visibly damage a plastic surface, the chemical and physical changes occurring to the surface at the micro-scale have been largely unexplored. In this work time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF–SIMS) has been used in conjunction with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine the effect of cleaning treatments on the surface of sheet polystyrene. Chemometric analysis of the ToF–SIMS data reveals the presence of surfactant residues and contamination from cleaning agents while physical damage in the form of scratching has been characterised using AFM and SEM. It is anticipated such work will assist in informing future conservation treatments for plastics

    From protest to agenda building: Description bias in media coverage of protest events in Washington, D.C

    Social movements often seek to draw attention to issues they deem important by organizing public demonstrations with the aim of attracting mass media coverage. But only a small proportion of all public demonstrations receives any media attention. This article asks whether even the minimal coverage that demonstrations receive reveal any influence of social movements in shaping how issues are framed by the mass media. Analyzing newspaper and television news stories on Washington, D.C. protests held during 1982 and 1991, we ask whether news reports on protests are framed in ways consistent with the aims of protesters. Do demonstrators receive media coverage that highlights the issues about which they are concerned, or does coverage focus on the protest event itself, to the exclusion of the social issues that movements target? Our results support much of the surmising among media scholars, that even when movements succeed at obtaining the attention of mass media outlets, media reports portray protests in ways that may undermine social movement agendas. Despite this obstacle to communicating protest messages through demonstrations, movements engage in other forms of communication that can affect public interpretations of mass media frames

    New Zealand has a high rate of mental disorders affecting 1 in 5 people. Current guidelines only outline building typologies and do not question the deeper affect of one’s perception of the built environment. This thesis seeks to help understand the affect of architecture on mental illness: specifically the condition of depression. In order to comprehend the relationship between architecture/space and its inhabitant, this thesis will firstly investigate how intangible elements such as colour, light; form etc. can alter the perception and experience of space. Secondly through case studies, text and drawings the thesis will examine the affect of the intangibles on the state of mental illness/depression. The negative aspect of architecture activating depression will be examined. This will assist in understanding how architecture can positively affect occupants of space with depression. Architecture and its relationship with depression will be examined to conclude whether it is a contributing factor. Architecture as therapy or as a therapeutic agent is proposed to engage aspects of the intangible. Investigation and comprehension of depression will lead to the selection of the site and a specific programme; then develop analysis to draw conclusions creating design considerations for treatment facilities. Furthermore it will translate ideas and theories from the framework into tangible physical identities. In depth critical analysis of existing precedents and understanding historical facilities is a key part of this research, building upon discovered issues. A case study design is aimed at creating architecture as therapy, which better understands the relationship of the ‘intangible’ in architecture. This thesis will propose a strategy to develop the specificity of architecture for therapy, to assist in addressing the specific treatment of severe depression in a New Zealand context, with the hope of increasing the success of therapy and rehabilitation

    Prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for shoulder and neck dysfunction after neck dissection: a systematic review

    Introduction Shoulder pain and dysfunction may occur following neck dissection among people being treated for head and neck cancer. This systematic review aims to examine the prevalence and incidence of shoulder and neck dysfunction after neck dissection and identify risk factors for these post-operative complications. Methods Electronic databases (Pubmed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane) were searched for articles including adults undergoing neck dissection for head and neck cancer. Studies that reported prevalence, incidence or risk factors for an outcome of the shoulder or neck were eligible and assessed using the Critical Review Form – Quantitative Studies. Results Seventy-five articles were included in the final review. Prevalence rates for shoulder pain were slightly higher after RND (range, 10–100%) compared with MRND (range, 0–100%) and SND (range, 9–25%). The incidence of reduced shoulder active range of motion depended on surgery type (range, 5–20%). The prevalence of reduced neck active range of motion after neck dissection was 1–13%. Type of neck dissection was a risk factor for shoulder pain, reduced function and health-related quality of life. Conclusions The prevalence and incidence of shoulder and neck dysfunction after neck dissection varies by type of surgery performed and measure of dysfunction used. Pre-operative education for patients undergoing neck dissection should acknowledge the potential for post-operative shoulder and neck problems to occur and inform patients that accessory nerve preservation lowers, but does not eliminate, the risk of developing musculoskeletal complications

    Investment in Cellulosic Biofuel Refineries: Do Waivable Biofuel Mandates Matter?

    We develop a conceptual model to study the impact of mandate policies on stimulating investment in cellulosic biofuel refineries. In a two-period framework, we compare the first-period investment level (FIL) under three scenarios: laissez-faire, non-waivable mandate (NWM) policy, and waivable mandate (WM) policy. Results show that when plant-level marginal costs are increasing then both NWM policy and WM policy may stimulate FIL. The WM policy has a smaller impact than does the NWM policy. When the plant-level marginal costs are constants, however, WM policy does not increase FIL but does increase the expected profit of more efficient investors

    Experimental investigation of SO2 poisoning in a Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell operating in CCS configuration

    [EN] One of the most interesting innovations in the CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) field is the use of MCFCs as carbon dioxide concentrators, feeding their cathode side (or air side) with the exhaust gas of a traditional power plant. The feasibility of this kind of application depends on the resistance of the MCFC to air-side contaminants, with particular attention to SO2. The aim of this work is to investigate the effects of poisoning when sulphur dioxide is added to the cathodic stream in various concentrations and in different operating conditions. This study was carried out operating single cells (80 cm(2)) with a cathodic feeding composition simulating typical flue gas conditions, i.e. N-2, H2O, O-2 and CO2 in 73:9:12:6 mol ratio as reference mixture. On the anodic side a base composition was chosen with H-2, CO2 and H2O in 64:16:20 mol ratio. Starting from these reference mixtures, the effect of single species on cell poisoning was experimentally investigated considering, as main parameters chosen for the sensitivity analysis, SO2 (0-24 ppm) and CO2 (4-12%) content in the cathodic feeding mixture, H-2 (40-64%) content in the anodic stream as well as the operating temperature (620-680 degrees C). Results showed that degradation caused by SO2 poisoning is strongly affected by the operating conditions. Data gathered during this experimental campaign will be used in a future work to model the poisoning mechanisms through the definition of MCFC electrochemical kinetics which take into account the SO2 effects.     Crater lake cichlids individually specialize along the benthic-limnetic axis

    A common pattern of adaptive diversification in freshwater fishes is the repeated evolution of elongated open water (limnetic) species and high-bodied shore (benthic) species from generalist ancestors. Studies on phenotype-diet correlations have suggested that population-wide individual specialization occurs at an early evolutionary and ecological stage of divergence and niche partitioning. This variable restricted niche use across individuals can provide the raw material for earliest stages of sympatric divergence. We investigated variation in morphology and diet as well as their correlations along the benthic-limnetic axis in an extremely young Midas cichlid species, Amphilophus tolteca, endemic to the Nicaraguan crater lake Asososca Managua. We found that A. tolteca varied continuously in ecologically relevant traits such as body shape and lower pharyngeal jaw morphology. The correlation of these phenotypes with niche suggested that individuals are specialized along the benthic-limnetic axis. No genetic differentiation within the crater lake was detected based on genotypes from 13 microsatellite loci. Overall, we found that individual specialization in this young crater lake species encompasses the limnetic- as well as the benthic macro-habitat. Yet there is no evidence for any diversification within the species, making this a candidate system for studying what might be the early stages preceding sympatric divergence

    Routes to diagnosis and the association with the prognosis in patients with cancer – A nationwide register-based cohort study in Denmark

    Background: The prognosis of cancer is related to how the cancer is identified, and where in the healthcare system the patient presents, i.e. routes to diagnosis (RtD). We aimed to describe the RtD for patients diagnosed with cancer in Denmark by using routinely collected register-based data and to investigate the association between RtD and prognosis measured as one-year all-cause mortality. / Methods: We conducted a population-based national cohort study by linking routinely collected Danish registry data. We categorised each patient into one of eight specified RtD based on an algorithm using a stepwise logic decision process. We described the proportions of patients with cancer diagnosed by different RtD. We examined associations between RtD and one-year all-cause mortality using logistic regression models adjusting for sex, age, cancer type, year of diagnosis, region of residence, and comorbidity. / Results: We included 144,635 cancers diagnosed in 139,023 patients in 2014–2017. The most common RtD were cancer patient pathway from primary care (45.9 %), cancer patient pathway from secondary care (20.0 %), unplanned hospital admission (15.8 %), and population-based screening (7.5 %). The one-year mortality ranged from 1.4 % in screened patients to 53.0 % in patients diagnosed through unplanned hospital admission. Patients with an unplanned admission were more likely to die within the first year after diagnosis (OR = 3.38 (95 %CI: 3.24–3.52)) compared to patients diagnosed through the cancer patient pathway from primary care. / Conclusion: The majority of cancer patients were diagnosed through a cancer patient pathway. The RtD were associated with the prognosis, and the prognosis was worst in patients diagnosed through unplanned admission. The study suggests that linking routinely collected registry data could enable a national framework for RtD, which could serve to identify variations across patient-, health-, and system-related and healthcare factors. This information could be used in future research investigating markers for monitoring purposes
