Magnetic phase diagram of MnSi inferred from magnetization and ac susceptibility
We report simultaneous measurements of the magnetization and the ac
susceptibility across the magnetic phase diagram of single-crystal MnSi. In our
study we explore the importance of the excitation frequency, excitation
amplitude, sample shape, and crystallographic orientation. The susceptibility,
dM/dH, calculated from the magnetization, is dominated by pronounced maxima at
the transition from the helical to the conical and the conical to the skyrmion
lattice phase. The maxima in dM/dH are not tracked by the ac susceptibility,
which in addition varies sensitively with the excitation amplitude and
frequency at the transition from the conical to the skyrmion lattice phase. The
same differences between dM/dH and the ac susceptibility exist for Mn1-xFexSi
(x=0.04) and Fe1-xCoxSi (x=0.20). Taken together our study establishes
consistently for all major crystallographic directions the existence of a
single pocket of the skyrmion lattice phase in MnSi, suggestive of a universal
characteristic of all B20 transition metal compounds with helimagnetic order.Comment: 19 pages, 20 figure
Field research on the spectral properties of crops and soils, volume 1
The experiment design, data acquisition and preprocessing, data base management, analysis results and development of instrumentation for the AgRISTARS Supporting Research Project, Field Research task are described. Results of several investigations on the spectral reflectance of corn and soybean canopies as influenced by cultural practices, development stage and nitrogen nutrition are reported as well as results of analyses of the spectral properties of crop canopies as a function of canopy geometry, row orientation, sensor view angle and solar illumination angle are presented. The objectives, experiment designs and data acquired in 1980 for field research experiments are described. The development and performance characteristics of a prototype multiband radiometer, data logger, and aerial tower for field research are discussed
Electronic dummy for acoustical testing
Electronic Dummy /ED/ used for acoustical testing represents the average male torso from the Xiphoid process upward and includes an acoustic replica of the human head. This head simulates natural flesh, and has an artificial voice and artificial ears that measure sound pressures at the eardrum or the entrance to the ear canal

We present arguments that show what the running of the cosmological constant
means when quantum general relativity is formulated following the prescription

Testing factorization in B -> D(*)X decays
In QCD the amplitude for B0 -> D(*)+pi- factorizes in the large Nc limit or
in the large energy limit Q >> Lambda_QCD where Q = {m_b, m_c, m_b-m_c}. Data
also suggests factorization in exclusive processes B-> D* pi+ pi- pi- pi0 and
B-> D* omega pi-, however by themselves neither large Nc nor large Q can
account for this. Noting that the condition for large energy release in B0-> D+
pi- is enforced by the SV limit, m_b, m_c >> m_b-m_c >> Lambda, we propose that
the combined large Nc and SV limits justify factorization in B -> D(*) X. This
combined limit is tested with the inclusive decay spectrum measured by CLEO. We
also give exact large Nc relations among isospin amplitudes for B -> D(*)X and
B -> D(*) D-bar(*)X, which can be used to test factorization through exclusive
or inclusive measurements. Predictions for the modes B-> D(*) pi pi, B-> D(*)K
K-bar and B-> D(*) D-bar(*) K are discussed using available data.Comment: 15 pages, 3 included .eps figures, minor change
Chiral spin liquid and emergent anyons in a Kagome lattice Mott insulator
Topological phases in frustrated quantum spin systems have fascinated
researchers for decades. One of the earliest proposals for such a phase was the
chiral spin liquid put forward by Kalmeyer and Laughlin in 1987 as the bosonic
analogue of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Elusive for many years, recent
times have finally seen a number of models that realize this phase. However,
these models are somewhat artificial and unlikely to be found in realistic
materials. Here, we take an important step towards the goal of finding a chiral
spin liquid in nature by examining a physically motivated model for a Mott
insulator on the Kagome lattice with broken time-reversal symmetry. We first
provide a theoretical justification for the emergent chiral spin liquid phase
in terms of a network model perspective. We then present an unambiguous
numerical identification and characterization of the universal topological
properties of the phase, including ground state degeneracy, edge physics, and
anyonic bulk excitations, by using a variety of powerful numerical probes,
including the entanglement spectrum and modular transformations.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures; partially supersedes arXiv:1303.696
Linear polarization of light by two wheat canopies measured at many view angles
The linear polarization and reflection of visible light by wheat as a function of sun-view directions, crop development stage, and wavelength were examined. Two-hundred spectra were taken continuously in wave-lengths from 0.45 to 0.72 Micron in 33 view directions using an Exotech model 20C spectroradiometer six meters above two wheat canopies in the boot and fully headed maturity stages. The analysis results show that the amount of linearly polarized light from the wheat canopies is greatest in the blue spectral region and decreases gradually with increasing wavelength. The results also show that the linearly polarized light from the canopies is generally greatest in the azimuth direction of the Sun and tends toward zero as the view direction tends toward the direction of the hot spot or anti-solar point. It is demonstrated that the single, angle of incidence of sunlight on the leaf, explains almost all of the variation of the amount of polarized light with Sun-view direction
