Chern-Simons action for zero-mode supporting gauge fields in three dimensions
Recent results on zero modes of the Abelian Dirac operator in three
dimensions support to some degree the conjecture that the Chern-Simons action
admits only certain quantized values for gauge fields that lead to zero modes
of the corresponding Dirac operator. Here we show that this conjecture is wrong
by constructing an explicit counter-example.Comment: version as published in PRD, minor change
A systematic review and economic evaluation of subcutaneous and sublingual allergen immunotherapy in adults and children with seasonal allergic rhinitis
© Queen’s Printer and Controller of HMSO 2013Severe allergic rhinitis uncontrolled by conventional medication can substantially affect quality of life. Immunotherapy involves administering increasing doses of a specific allergen, with the aim of reducing sensitivity and symptomatic reactions. Recent meta-analyses have concluded that both subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) are more effective than placebo in reducing symptoms. It is uncertain which route of administration is more effective and whether or not treatment is cost-effective.National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment programm
Superior lentiviral vectors designed for BSL-0 environment abolish vector mobilization.
Lentiviral vector mobilization following HIV-1 infection of vector-transduced cells poses biosafety risks to vector-treated patients and their communities. The self-inactivating (SIN) vector design has reduced, however, not abolished mobilization of integrated vector genomes. Furthermore, an earlier study demonstrated the ability of the major product of reverse transcription, a circular SIN HIV-1 vector comprising a single- long terminal repeat (LTR) to support production of high vector titers. Here, we demonstrate that configuring the internal vector expression cassette in opposite orientation to the LTRs abolishes mobilization of SIN vectors. This additional SIN mechanism is in part premised on induction of host PKR response to double-stranded RNAs comprised of mRNAs transcribed from cryptic transcription initiation sites around 3'SIN-LTR's and the vector internal promoter. As anticipated, PKR response following transfection of opposite orientation vectors, negatively affects their titers. Importantly, shRNA-mediated knockdown of PKR rendered titers of SIN HIV-1 vectors comprising opposite orientation expression cassettes comparable to titers of conventional SIN vectors. High-titer vectors carrying an expression cassette in opposite orientation to the LTRs efficiently delivered and maintained high levels of transgene expression in mouse livers. This study establishes opposite orientation expression cassettes as an additional PKR-dependent SIN mechanism that abolishes vector mobilization from integrated and episomal SIN lentiviral vectors
Interactions between organic friction modifier additives
The interactions of different additives in engine oils can create synergistic or antagonistic effects. This paper studies how mixing different organic friction modifier additives affects friction reducing properties of lubricants in the boundary lubrication regime. Amines of different degree of saturation were mixed with either glycerol monooleate (GMO) or oleic acid in hexadecane. The model lubricants thus formed were characterised with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Friction tests in reciprocating motion using ball-on-disc steel-steel contacts were conducted to examine the tribological performance of these lubricants. Worn surfaces were examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Oleic acid and oleylamine, a primary amine. Were found to form a partial ionic liquid, providing synergistic friction reduction. This positive interaction reduces with increasing degree of saturation of the amine. No synergistic effect was observed between GMO and oleylamine, suggesting that GMO does not hydrolyse into a carboxylic acid within a rubbing contact in the presence of amine. Protecting the Primordial Baryon Asymmetry From Erasure by Sphalerons
If the baryon asymmetry of the universe was created at the GUT scale,
sphalerons together with exotic sources of -violation could have erased
it, unless the latter satisfy stringent bounds. We elaborate on how the small
Yukawa coupling of the electron drastically weakens previous estimates of these
bounds.Comment: 41 pp., 4 latex figures included and 3 uuencoded or postscript

Multiple zero modes of the Dirac operator in three dimensions
One of the key properties of Dirac operators is the possibility of a
degeneracy of zero modes. For the Abelian Dirac operator in three dimensions
the construction of multiple zero modes has been sucessfully carried out only
very recently. Here we generalise these results by discussing a much wider
class of Dirac operators together with their zero modes. Further we show that
those Dirac operators that do admit zero modes may be related to Hopf maps,
where the Hopf index is related to the number of zero modes in a simple way.Comment: Latex file, 20 pages, no figure
The abundance of high-redshift objects as a probe of non-Gaussian initial conditions
The observed abundance of high-redshift galaxies and clusters contains
precious information about the properties of the initial perturbations. We
present a method to compute analytically the number density of objects as a
function of mass and redshift for a range of physically motivated non-Gaussian
models. In these models the non-Gaussianity can be dialed from zero and is
assumed to be small. We compute the probability density function for the
smoothed dark matter density field and we extend the Press and Schechter
approach to mildly non-Gaussian density fields. The abundance of high-redshift
objects can be directly related to the non-Gaussianity parameter and thus to
the physical processes that generated deviations from the Gaussian behaviour.
Even a skewness parameter of order 0.1 implies a dramatic change in the
predicted abundance of z\gap 1 objects. Observations from NGST and X-ray
satellites (XMM) can be used to accurately measure the amount of
non-Gaussianity in the primordial density field.Comment: Minor changes to match the accepted ApJ version (ApJ, 539
