Jet quenching in relativistic heavy ion collisions
Parton propagation in dense nuclear matter results in elastic, inelastic and
coherent multiple soft scattering with the in-medium color charges. Such
scattering leads to calculable modifications of the hadron production cross
section that is evaluated in the framework of the perturbative QCD
factorization approach. Final state medium-induced gluon bremsstrahlung is
arguably the most efficient way of suppressing large transverse momentum
particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The observed hadronic
attenuation, known as jet quenching, can be related to the properties of the
medium, such as density and temperature, and carries valuable information about
the early stages of heavy ion reactions. Non-Abelian energy loss in the
quark-gluon plasma can be studied in much greater detail through the
modification of the two particle back-to-back correlations. Perturbative
calculations give good description of the redistribution of the lost energy in
lower transverse momentum particles and predict significant increase of the
correlation width of away-side di-hadrons. In contrast, energy loss in cold
nuclear matter was found to be small but for large values of Feynman-x is
expected to complement the dynamical higher twist shadowing in experimentally
observable forward rapidity hadron suppression.Comment: Invited plenary talk at the V-th international conference on the

Jet tomography
I summarize the recent advances in jet tomographic studies of cold and hot
nuclear matter based on perturbative QCD calculations of medium-induced gluon
bremsstrahlung. Quantitative applications to ultrarelativistic heavy ion
reactions at RHIC indicate the creation of a deconfined state of QCD with
initial energy density on the order of 100 times cold nuclear matter density.Comment: Plenary talk given at the seventeenth international conference on

The model of organizational structure of Lviv State University of Vi tal Activity Safety is developed in the project management system "Megaplan". Semi-Hard Scattering Unraveled from Collective Dynamics by Two-Pion Azimuthal Correlations in 158 A GeV/c Pb + Au Collisions
Elliptic flow and two-particle azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons and
high- pions ( 1 GeV/) have been measured close to mid-rapidity in
158A GeV/ Pb+Au collisions by the CERES experiment. Elliptic flow ()
rises linearly with to a value of about 10% at 2 GeV/. Beyond
1.5 GeV/, the slope decreases considerably, possibly indicating
a saturation of at high . Two-pion azimuthal anisotropies for
1.2 GeV/ exceed the elliptic flow values by about 60% in mid-central
collisions. These non-flow contributions are attributed to near-side and
back-to-back jet-like correlations, the latter exhibiting centrality dependent

A Large Cross-Sectional Study of Health Attitudes, Knowledge, Behaviour and Risks in the Post-War Croatian Population (The First Croatian Health Project*)
As the liberation of occupied Croatian territories ended the war in the country in
1995, the Ministry of Health and Croatian Health Insurance Institute have agreed to
create the new framework for developing a long-term strategy of public health planning,
prevention and intervention. They provided financial resources to develop the First Cro-atian Health Project, the rest of the support coming from the World Bank loan and the
National Institute of Public Health. A large cross-sectional study was designed aiming
to assess health attitudes, knowledge, behaviour and risks in the post-war Croatian
population. The large field study was carried out by the Institute for Anthropological
Research with technical support from the National Institute of Public Health. The field
study was completed between 1995–1997. It included about 10,000 adult volunteers
from all 21 Croatian counties. The geographic distribution of the sample covered both
coastal and continental areas of Croatia and included rural and urban environments.
The specific measurements included antropometry (body mass index and blood pressure).
From each examinee a blood sample was collected from which the levels of total
plasma cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), HDL-cholesterol (High Density Lipoprotein),
LDL-cholesterol (Low Density Lipoprotein), lipoprotein Lp(a), and haemostatic
risk factor fibrinogen (F) were determined. The detailed data were collected on the general
knowledge and attitudes on health issues, followed by specific investigation of
smoking history, alcohol consumption, nutrition habits, physical activity, family history
of chronic non-communicable diseases and occupational exposures. From the initial database
a targeted sample of 5,840 persons of both sexes, aged 18–65, was created corresponding
by age, sex and geographic distribution to the general Croatian population.
This paper summarises and discusses the main findings of the project within this representative
sample of Croatian population
Universal Pion Freeze-out in Heavy-Ion Collisions
Based on an evaluation of data on pion interferometry and on particle yields
at mid-rapidity, we propose a universal condition for thermal freeze-out of
pions in heavy-ion collisions. We show that freeze-out occurs when the mean
free path of pions lambda_f reaches a value of about 1 fm, which is much
smaller than the spatial extent of the system at freeze-out. This critical mean
free path is independent of the centrality of the collision and beam energy

Low-mass e+e- pair production in 158 A GeV Pb-Au collisions at the CERN SPS, its dependence on multiplicity and transverse momentum
We report a measurement of low-mass electron pairs observed in 158
GeV/nucleon Pb-Au collisions. The pair yield integrated over the range of
invariant masses 0.2 < m < 2.0 GeV is enhanced by a factor of 3.5 +/- 0.4
(stat) +/- 0.9 (syst) over the expectation from neutral meson decays. As
observed previously in S-Au collisions, the enhancement is most pronounced in
the invariant-mass region 300-700 MeV. For Pb-Au we find evidence for a strong
increase of the enhancement with centrality. In addition, we show that the
enhancement covers a wide range in transverse momentum, but is largest at the

New Results on Pb-Au Collisions at 40 AGeV from the CERES/NA45 Experiment
In 1999 the CERES/NA45 ran at the CERN SPS with a beam energy of 40
GeV/nucleon. The data set comprises about 8.7 millions Pb-Au events with a
trigger selection corresponding to approximately the most central 30% of the
geometrical cross section. Results on low-mass electron pair analysis are
presented.
The upgrade of the experimental setup with the radial drift TPC has allowed
to enhance hadron physics capabilities of the experiment. New results on hadron

Lambda production in 40 A GeV/c Pb-Au collisions
During the 1999 lead run, CERES has measured hadron and electron-pair
production at 40 A GeV/c beam momentum with the spectrometer upgraded by the
addition of a radial TPC. Here the analysis of lambda and antilambda will be

Recent results from Pb-Au collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon obtained with the CERES spectrometer
During the 1996 lead run time, CERES has accumulated 42 million events,
corresponding to a factor of 5 more statistics than in 1995 and 2.5 million
events of a special photon-run. We report on the results of the low-mass
ee-pair analysis. Since the most critical item is the poor
signal-to-background ratio we also discuss the understanding of this
background, in absolute terms, with the help of a detailed Monte Carlo
simulation. We show preliminary results of the photon analysis and summarize
