Lateral cephalometric analysis of asymptomatic volunteers and symptomatic patients with and without bilateral temporomandibular joint disk displacement
Few studies of dentofacial and orthodontic structural relationships relative to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction have been reported. We undertook this investigation to determine any correlation of orthodontic and dentofacial characteristics with TMJ bilateral disc displacement. The population of patients was selected from a TMJ clinic where a control group of asymptomatic volunteers had been previously established and standardized. Differences in skeletal structural features were determined among three study groups: (1) asymptomatic volunteers with no TMJ disk displacement, (2) symptomatic patients with no TMJ disc displacement, and (3) symptomatic patients with bilateral TMJ disk displacement. Thirty-two asymptomatic volunteers without disk displacement (25 female, 7 male) were compared with the same number each of symptomatic patients without TMJ disk displacement and symptomatic patients with bilateral TMJ disk displacement. All subjects had undergone a standardized clinical examination, bilateral TMJ magnetic resonance imaging, and lateral cephalometric radiographic analysis. The groups were matched according to sex, TMJ status, age, and Angle classification of malocclusion. Seventeen lateral cephalometric radiographic cranial base, maxillomandibular, and vertical dimension variables were evaluated and compared among the study groups. The mean angle of SNB, or the intersection of the sella-nasion plane and the nasionâpoint B line (indicating mandibular retrognathism relative to cranial base), of the symptomatic patients-with-displacement group was significantly smaller than that in the asymptomatic volunteers and symptomatic patients without bilateral disk displacement (p \u3c 0.05). Female subjects showed smaller linear measurements of mandibular length, lower facial height, and total anterior facial height than male subjects in all three groups (p \u3c 0.05). The mean angle of ANB, or the intersection of the nasionâpoint A and nasionâpoint B planes (indicating retrognathism of mandible relative to maxilla), was significantly greater in female than in male subjects, in all groups (p \u3c 0.05). Symptomatic patients with bilateral disk displacement had a retropositioned mandible, indicated by a smaller mean SNB angle compared with that in asymptomatic volunteers and symptomatic patients with no disk displacement on either side. Lateral cephalometric radiographic assessment may improve predictability of TMJ disk displacement in orthodontic patients but is not diagnostic; nor does the assessment explain any cause-and-effect relationship. A Spitzer Unbiased Ultradeep Spectroscopic Survey
We carried out an unbiased, spectroscopic survey using the low-resolution
module of the infrared spectrograph (IRS) on board Spitzer targeting two 2.6
square arcminute regions in the GOODS-North field. IRS was used in spectral
mapping mode with 5 hours of effective integration time per pixel. One region
was covered between 14 and 21 microns and the other between 20 and 35 microns.
We extracted spectra for 45 sources. About 84% of the sources have reported
detections by GOODS at 24 microns, with a median F_nu(24um) ~ 100 uJy. All but
one source are detected in all four IRAC bands, 3.6 to 8 microns. We use a new
cross-correlation technique to measure redshifts and estimate IRS spectral
types; this was successful for ~60% of the spectra. Fourteen sources show
significant PAH emission, four mostly SiO absorption, eight present mixed
spectral signatures (low PAH and/or SiO) and two show a single line in
emission. For the remaining 17, no spectral features were detected. Redshifts
range from z ~ 0.2 to z ~ 2.2, with a median of 1. IR Luminosities are roughly
estimated from 24 microns flux densities, and have median values of 2.2 x
10^{11} L_{\odot} and 7.5 x 10^{11} L_{\odot} at z ~ 1 and z ~ 2 respectively.
This sample has fewer AGN than previous faint samples observed with IRS, which
we attribute to the fainter luminosities reached here.Comment: Published in Ap
APM 08279+5255: Keck Near- and Mid-IR High-Resolution Imaging
We present Keck high-resolution near-IR (2.2 microns; FWHM~0.15") and mid-IR
(12.5 microns; FWHM~0.4") images of APM08279+5255, a z=3.91 IR-luminous BALQSO
with a prodigious apparent bolometric luminosity of 5x10^{15} Lsun, the largest
known in the universe. The K-band image shows that this system consists of
three components, all of which are likely to be the gravitationally lensed
images of the same background object, and the 12.5 micron image shows a
morphology consistent with such an image configuration. Our lens model suggests
that the magnification factor is ~100 from the restframe UV to mid-IR, where
most of the luminosity is released. The intrinsic bolometric luminosity and IR
luminosity of APM08279+5255 are estimated to be 5x10^{13} Lsun and 1x10^{13}
Lsun, respectively. This indicates that APM 08279+5255 is intriniscally
luminous, but it is not the most luminous object known. As for its dust
contents, little can be determined with the currently available data due to the
uncertainties associated with the dust emissivity and the possible effects of
differential magnification. We also suggest that the lensing galaxy is likely

HPV Vaccine Reminders at the Point of Service: Efficacy and Missed Opportunities. A Claims Based Study within One Health Plan
Introduction: Our objective is to assess HPV vaccine series completion rates, whether on-screen Point of Service reminders (POS) make a difference, and missed opportunities for reminders to have an effect.
Methods: Retrospective, claims-based study of females aged 9-26 receiving an initial dose of HPV vaccine during 2 periods: before (period 1) and after (period 2) implementation of a POS reminder system in 1(âChange Groupâ) of 2 physician groups using EHRs for both periods. Completion rates, and missed opportunities during eligible periods were calculated for those with continuous enrollment in the health plan investigated.
Results: Completion rates within 1 year of the 1st dose were Period 1: 47% Change Group vs. 46% Control Group (p=0.847). Period 2: 50% Change group vs. 57% Control Group (p=0.158). No significant improvement occurred between the 2 periods in either group. Differences in 1 year completion rates by specialty of initiating provider or age group (â„18) were not significant.
During period 2, among those with continuous insurance plan enrollment in the Change Group, 43 patients received 1 dose and 46 received 2 doses. Of those receiving 1 dose, 30 (70%) had a visit to the same group within an eligible time period (median # visits: 2, range 1-20); of those completing 2 doses, 4 (9%) had a visit to the same group within an eligible period (median # visits: 1, range: 1-3). Among those receiving 1 dose, 25 (58%) had a visit to the same group and same specialty as the initial dose (median # visits: 1, range 1-8); for those having received 2 doses, 3 (6%) had a subsequent visit to same group and specialty (median # visits: 1, range 1-3).
Conclusion: POS reminder systems was not associated with improved completion rates. POS reminders are limited by infrequent visits among non-completers in an eligible period
Modeling Dust and Starlight in Galaxies Observed by Spitzer and Herschel: NGC 628 and NGC 6946
We characterize the dust in NGC628 and NGC6946, two nearby spiral galaxies in
the KINGFISH sample. With data from 3.6um to 500um, dust models are strongly
constrained. Using the Draine & Li (2007) dust model, (amorphous silicate and
carbonaceous grains), for each pixel in each galaxy we estimate (1) dust mass
surface density, (2) dust mass fraction contributed by polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAH)s, (3) distribution of starlight intensities heating the
dust, (4) total infrared (IR) luminosity emitted by the dust, and (5) IR
luminosity originating in regions with high starlight intensity. We obtain maps
for the dust properties, which trace the spiral structure of the galaxies. The
dust models successfully reproduce the observed global and resolved spectral
energy distributions (SEDs). The overall dust/H mass ratio is estimated to be
0.0082+/-0.0017 for NGC628, and 0.0063+/-0.0009 for NGC6946, consistent with
what is expected for galaxies of near-solar metallicity. Our derived dust
masses are larger (by up to a factor 3) than estimates based on
single-temperature modified blackbody fits. We show that the SED fits are
significantly improved if the starlight intensity distribution includes a
(single intensity) "delta function" component. We find no evidence for
significant masses of cold dust T<12K. Discrepancies between PACS and MIPS
photometry in both low and high surface brightness areas result in large
uncertainties when the modeling is done at PACS resolutions, in which case
SPIRE, MIPS70 and MIPS160 data cannot be used. We recommend against attempting
