The missing atom as a source of carbon magnetism
Atomic vacancies have a strong impact in the mechanical, electronic and
magnetic properties of graphene-like materials. By artificially generating
isolated vacancies on a graphite surface and measuring their local density of
states on the atomic scale, we have shown how single vacancies modify the
electronic properties of this graphene-like system. Our scanning tunneling
microscopy experiments, complemented by tight binding calculations, reveal the
presence of a sharp electronic resonance at the Fermi energy around each single
graphite vacancy, which can be associated with the formation of local magnetic
moments and implies a dramatic reduction of the charge carriers' mobility.
While vacancies in single layer graphene naturally lead to magnetic couplings
of arbitrary sign, our results show the possibility of inducing a macroscopic
ferrimagnetic state in multilayered graphene samples just by randomly removing
single C atoms.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter
Dynamic correlations in an ordered c(22) lattice gas
We obtain the dynamic correlation function of two-dimensional lattice gas
with nearest-neighbor repulsion in ordered c(22) phase
(antiferromagnetic ordering) under the condition of low concentration of
structural defects. It is shown that displacements of defects of the ordered
state are responsible for the particle number fluctuations in the probe area.
The corresponding set of kinetic equations is derived and solved in linear
approximation on the defect concentration. Three types of strongly correlated
complex jumps are considered and their contribution to fluctuations is
analysed. These are jumps of excess particles, vacancies and flip-flop jumps.
The kinetic approach is more general than the one based on diffusion-like
equations used in our previous papers. Thus, it becomes possible to adequately
describe correlations of fluctuations at small times, where our previous theory
fails to give correct results. Our new analytical results for fluctuations of
particle number in the probe area agree well with those obtained by Monte Carlo
simulations.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Strain-induced Evolution of Electronic Band Structures in a Twisted Graphene Bilayer
Here we study the evolution of local electronic properties of a twisted
graphene bilayer induced by a strain and a high curvature. The strain and
curvature strongly affect the local band structures of the twisted graphene
bilayer; the energy difference of the two low-energy van Hove singularities
decreases with increasing the lattice deformations and the states condensed
into well-defined pseudo-Landau levels, which mimic the quantization of massive
Dirac fermions in a magnetic field of about 100 T, along a graphene wrinkle.
The joint effect of strain and out-of-plane distortion in the graphene wrinkle
also results in a valley polarization with a significant gap, i.e., the
eight-fold degenerate Landau level at the charge neutrality point is splitted
into two four-fold degenerate quartets polarized on each layer. These results
suggest that strained graphene bilayer could be an ideal platform to realize
the high-temperature zero-field quantum valley Hall effect.Comment: 4 figure
Localization of Dirac electrons by Moire patterns in graphene bilayers
We study the electronic structure of two Dirac electron gazes coupled by a
periodic Hamiltonian such as it appears in rotated graphene bilayers. Ab initio
and tight-binding approaches are combined and show that the spatially periodic
coupling between the two Dirac electron gazes can renormalize strongly their
velocity. We investigate in particular small angles of rotation and show that
the velocity tends to zero in this limit. The localization is confirmed by an
analysis of the eigenstates which are localized essentially in the AA zones of
the Moire patterns.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Clar's Theory, STM Images, and Geometry of Graphene Nanoribbons
We show that Clar's theory of the aromatic sextet is a simple and powerful
tool to predict the stability, the \pi-electron distribution, the geometry, the
electronic/magnetic structure of graphene nanoribbons with different hydrogen
edge terminations. We use density functional theory to obtain the equilibrium
atomic positions, simulated scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images, edge
energies, band gaps, and edge-induced strains of graphene ribbons that we
analyze in terms of Clar formulas. Based on their Clar representation, we
propose a classification scheme for graphene ribbons that groups configurations
with similar bond length alternations, STM patterns, and Raman spectra. Our
simulations show how STM images and Raman spectra can be used to identify the
type of edge termination

Eje: Conferencias.Universidad Nacional de La Plat
