    The creation of a professional degree in organic farming, known as an ABCD, is the result of the desire to provide training at the national level that is supported by the agriculture sector and that brings together the know-how of universities and higher education institutions specialised in agronomy and those of a network of teaching establishments specialised in technical education in the field. This degree aims at forming agents and advisors capable of working in a wide range of fields such as production, processing, distribution, control-certification and marketing. It is mainly intended for adults interested in career development and students who would like to further their education. Four training sites are involved and all teaching is done through a virtual digital university using information and communication technologies

    Observation and assessment of model retrievals of surface exchange components over a row canopy using directional thermal data

    Land surface temperature is an essential climate variable that can serve as a proxy for detecting water deficiencies in croplands and wooded areas. Its measurement can however be influenced by anisotropic properties of surface targets leading to occurrence of directional effects on the signal. This may lead to an incorrect interpretation of thermal measurements. In this study, we perform model assessments and check the influence of thermal radiation directionality using data over a vineyard. To derive the overall directional surface temperatures, elemental values measured by individual cameras were aggregated according to the respective cover fractions/weights in viewing direction. Aggregated temperatures from the turbid model were compared to corresponding temperatures simulated by the 3D DART radiative transfer model. The reconstructed temperatures were then used in surface-energy-balance (SEB) simulations to assess the impact of the Sun-target-sensor geometry on retrievals. Here, the pseudo-isotropic Soil-Plant-Atmosphere-Remote-Sensing-of-Evapotranspiration (SPARSE) dual-source model together with the non-isotropic version (SPARSE4), were used. Both schemes were able to retrieve overall fluxes satisfactorily, confirming a previous study. However, the sensitivity (of flux and component temperature estimates) of the schemes to viewing direction was tested for the first time using reconstructed sets of directional thermal data to force the models. Degradation (relative to nadir) in flux retrieval cross-row was observed, with better consistency along rows. Overall, it was nevertheless shown that SPARSE4 is less influenced by the viewing direction of the temperature than SPARSE, particularly for strongly off-nadir viewing. Some directional/asymmetrical artefacts are however not well reproduced by the simple Radiative Transfer Methods (RTM), which can then manifest in and influence the subsequent thermal-infrared-driven SEB modelling.This work was supported by the ALTOS project (PRIMA 2018 - Section 2), with grants provided by ANR via the agreement n°ANR-18-PRIM-0011-02 as well as the CNES/TOSCA program for the TRISHNA project.     On-line relational SOM for dissimilarity data

    International audienceIn some applications and in order to address real world situations better, data may be more complex than simple vectors. In some examples, they can be known through their pairwise dissimilarities only. Several variants of the Self Organizing Map algorithm were introduced to generalize the original algorithm to this framework. Whereas median SOM is based on a rough representation of the prototypes, relational SOM allows representing these prototypes by a virtual combination of all elements in the data set. However, this latter approach suffers from two main drawbacks. First, its complexity can be large. Second, only a batch version of this algorithm has been studied so far and it often provides results having a bad topographic organization. In this article, an on-line version of relational SOM is described and justified. The algorithm is tested on several datasets, including categorical data and graphs, and compared with the batch version and with other SOM algorithms for non vector data

    Magnetism, Spin-Orbit Coupling, and Superconducting Pairing in UGe2_2

    A consistent picture on the mean-field level of the magnetic properties and electronic structure of the superconducting itinerant ferromagnet UGe2_2 is shown to require inclusion of correlation effects beyond the local density approximation (LDA). The "LDA+U" approach reproduces both the magnitude of the observed moment, composed of strongly opposing spin and orbital parts, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The largest Fermi surface sheet is comprised primarily of spin majority states with orbital projection mâ„“m_{\ell}=0, suggesting a much simpler picture of the pairing than is possible for general strong spin-orbit coupled materials. This occurrence, and the quasi-two-dimensional geometry of the Fermi surface, support the likelihood of magnetically mediated p-wave triplet pairing.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.     Assessing clinical communication skills in physicians: are the skills context specific or generalizable

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Communication skills are essential for physicians to practice Medicine. Evidence for the validity and domain specificity of communication skills in physicians is equivocal and requires further research. This research was conducted to adduce evidence for content and context specificity of communication skills and to assess the usefulness of a generic instrument for assessing communication skills in International Medical Graduates (IMGs).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A psychometric design was used for identifying the reliability and validity of the communication skills instruments used for high-stakes exams for IMG's. Data were collected from 39 IMGs (19 men – 48.7%; 20 women – 51.3%; Mean age = 41 years) assessed at 14 station OSCE and subsequently in supervised clinical practice with several instruments (patient surveys; ITERs; Mini-CEX).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All the instruments had adequate reliability (Cronbach's alpha: .54 – .96). There were significant correlations (r range: 0.37 – 0.70, <it>p </it>< .05) of communication skills assessed by examiner with standardized patients, and of mini-CEX with patient surveys, and ITERs. The intra-item reliability across all cases for the 13 items was low (Cronbach's alpha: .20 – .56). The correlations of communication skills within method (e.g., OSCE or clinical practice) were significant but were non-significant between methods (e.g., OSCE and clinical practice).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results provide evidence of context specificity of communication skills, as well as convergent and criterion-related validity of communication skills. Both in OSCEs and clinical practice, communication checklists need to be case specific, designed for content validity.</p

    Direct observation of phase coherence in 3-<b>k</b> magnetic configurations

    International audienceWe report the observation by neutron diffraction of phase coherent Bragg reflections in a multi-k magnetic configuration with a spatial periodicity outside the conventional scattering cross-section. The peaks, which exist in the 3-k state of UAs0.8Se0.2, display long-range order with a wavevector dependence characteristic of a magnetic interaction. The results confirm the long-range order and temperature dependence reported in an earlier study of similar peaks in this material using x-ray resonant scattering by (a) the non-trivial extension to the technique of neutron diffraction, and (b) the observation of similar 3-k phase-coherent reflections in other samples by x-ray resonant scattering. The importance of the neutron diffraction results lies primarily in the fact that magnetic neutron diffraction is well established as a weak probe operating on thermodynamic time scales. This alleviates concern that the rapid (10-15 - 10-14 s), strong interaction, characteristic of the resonant x-ray technique, is imaging a transient or non-equilibrium configuration. Likewise, the extension of the x-ray resonant scattering results to other samples establishes the generality of this effect.     The SPARSE model for the prediction of water stress and evapotranspiration components from thermal infra-red data and its evaluation over irrigated and rainfed wheat

    Evapotranspiration is an important component of the water cycle, especially in semi-arid lands. A way to quantify the spatial distribution of evapotranspiration and water stress from remote-sensing data is to exploit the available surface temperature as a signature of the surface energy balance. Remotely sensed energy balance models enable one to estimate stress levels and, in turn, the water status of continental surfaces. Dual-source models are particularly useful since they allow derivation of a rough estimate of the water stress of the vegetation instead of that of a soil&#8211;vegetation composite. They either assume that the soil and the vegetation interact almost independently with the atmosphere (patch approach corresponding to a parallel resistance scheme) or are tightly coupled (layer approach corresponding to a series resistance scheme). The water status of both sources is solved simultaneously from a single surface temperature observation based on a realistic underlying assumption which states that, in most cases, the vegetation is unstressed, and that if the vegetation is stressed, evaporation is negligible. In the latter case, if the vegetation stress is not properly accounted for, the resulting evaporation will decrease to unrealistic levels (negative fluxes) in order to maintain the same total surface temperature. This work assesses the retrieval performances of total and component evapotranspiration as well as surface and plant water stress levels by (1) proposing a new dual-source model named Soil Plant Atmosphere and Remote Sensing Evapotranspiration (SPARSE) in two versions (parallel and series resistance networks) based on the TSEB (Two-Source Energy Balance model, Norman et al., 1995) model rationale as well as state-of-the-art formulations of turbulent and radiative exchange, (2) challenging the limits of the underlying hypothesis for those two versions through a synthetic retrieval test and (3) testing the water stress retrievals (vegetation water stress and moisture-limited soil evaporation) against in situ data over contrasted test sites (irrigated and rainfed wheat). We demonstrated with those two data sets that the SPARSE series model is more robust to component stress retrieval for this cover type, that its performance increases by using bounding relationships based on potential conditions (root mean square error lowered by up to 11 W m&#8722;2 from values of the order of 50&#8211;80 W m&#8722;2), and that soil evaporation retrieval is generally consistent with an independent estimate from observed soil moisture evolution

    How much do health care providers value a community-based asthma care program? – a survey to collect their opinions on the utilities of and barriers to its uptake

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A comprehensive asthma care program (ACP) based on Canadian Asthma Consensus Guidelines was implemented in 8 primary care sites in Ontario, Canada. A survey was distributed to health care providers' (HCPs) to collect their opinions on the utilities of and barriers to the uptake of the ACP.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A 39-item self-administered survey was mailed to 184 HCPs and support staff involved in delivering the ACP at the end of implementation. The items were presented in mixed formats with most items requiring responses on a five-point Likert scale. Distributions of responses were analyzed and compared across types of HCPs and sites.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 184 surveys distributed, 108 (59%) were returned, and of that, 83 were completed by HCPs who had clinical contact with the patients. Overall, 95% of the HCPs considered the ACP useful for improving asthma care management. Most HCPs favored using the asthma care map (72%), believed it decreased uncertainties and variations in patient management (91%), and considered it a convenient and reliable source of information (86%). The most commonly reported barrier was time required to complete the asthma care map. Over half of the HCPs reported challenges to using spirometry, while almost 40% identified barriers to using the asthma action plan.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Contrary to the notion that physicians believe that guidelines foster cookbook medicine, our study showed that HCPs believed that the ACP offered an effective and reliable approach for enhancing asthma care and management in primary care.</p
