    Practical quantum key distribution: On the security evaluation with inefficient single-photon detectors

    Quantum Key Distribution with the BB84 protocol has been shown to be unconditionally secure even using weak coherent pulses instead of single-photon signals. The distances that can be covered by these methods are limited due to the loss in the quantum channel (e.g. loss in the optical fiber) and in the single-photon counters of the receivers. One can argue that the loss in the detectors cannot be changed by an eavesdropper in order to increase the covered distance. Here we show that the security analysis of this scenario is not as easy as is commonly assumed, since already two-photon processes allow eavesdropping strategies that outperform the known photon-number splitting attack.     Comparison of Bond Character in Hydrocarbons and Fullerenes

    We present a comparison of the bond polarizabilities for carbon-carbon bonds in hydrocarbons and fullerenes, using two different models for the fullerene Raman spectrum and the results of Raman measurements on ethane and ethylene. We find that the polarizabilities for single bonds in fullerenes and hydrocarbons compare well, while the double bonds in fullerenes have greater polarizability than in ethylene.Comment: 7 pages, no figures, uses RevTeX.     SummaryCeliac sprue (also known as celiac disease) is an inheritable, gluten-induced enteropathy of the upper small intestine with an estimated prevalence of 0.5%–1% in most parts of the world. The ubiquitous nature of food gluten, coupled with inadequate labeling regulations in most countries, constantly poses a threat of disease exacerbation and relapse for patients. Here, we demonstrate that a two-enzyme cocktail comprised of a glutamine-specific cysteine protease (EP-B2) that functions under gastric conditions and a PEP, which acts in concert with pancreatic proteases under duodenal conditions, is a particularly potent candidate for celiac sprue therapy. At a gluten:EP-B2:PEP weight ratio of 75:3:1, grocery store gluten is fully detoxified within 10 min of simulated duodenal conditions, as judged by chromatographic analysis, biopsy-derived T cell proliferation assays, and a commercial antigluten antibody test

    Bundling up carbon nanotubes through Wigner defects

    We show, using ab initio total energy density functional theory, that the so-called Wigner defects, an interstitial carbon atom right besides a vacancy, which are present in irradiated graphite can also exist in bundles of carbon nanotubes. Due to the geometrical structure of a nanotube, however, this defect has a rather low formation energy, lower than the vacancy itself, suggesting that it may be one of the most important defects that are created after electron or ion irradiation. Moreover, they form a strong link between the nanotubes in bundles, increasing their shear modulus by a sizeable amount, clearly indicating its importance for the mechanical properties of nanotube bundles.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figure

    Theory of Spontaneous Polarization of Endohedral Fullerenes

    A pseudo-Jahn-Teller model describing central atom distortions is proposed for endohedral fullerenes of the form A@C60_{60} where A is either a rare gas or a metal atom. A critical (dimensionless) coupling gcg_c is found, below which the symmetric configuration is stable and above which inversion symmetry is broken.     Observation and Assignment of Silent and Higher Order Vibrations in the Infrared Transmission of C60 Crystals

    We report the measurement of infrared transmission of large C60 single crystals. The spectra exhibit a very rich structure with over 180 vibrational absorptions visible in the 100 - 4000 cm-1 range. Many silent modes are observed to have become weakly IR-active. We also observe a large number of higher order combination modes. The temperature (77K - 300K) and pressure (0 - 25KBar) dependencies of these modes were measured and are presented. Careful analysis of the IR spectra in conjunction with Raman scattering data showing second order modes and neutron scattering data, allow the selection of the 46 vibrational modes C60. We are able to fit *all* of the first and second order data seen in the present IR spectra and the previously published Raman data (~300 lines total), using these 46 modes and their group theory allowed second order combinations.Comment: REVTEX v3.0 in LaTeX. 12 pages. 8 Figures by request. c60lon

    Quantum cryptography using balanced homodyne detection

    We report an experimental quantum key distribution that utilizes balanced homodyne detection, instead of photon counting, to detect weak pulses of coherent light. Although our scheme inherently has a finite error rate, it allows high-efficiency detection and quantum state measurement of the transmitted light using only conventional devices at room temperature. When the average photon number was 0.1, an error rate of 0.08 and "effective" quantum efficiency of 0.76 were obtained.Comment: Errors in the sentence citing ref.[20] are correcte

    Ion-Pairing Limits Crystal Growth in Metal-Oxygen Batteries

    Aprotic alkali metal-oxygen batteries are widely considered to be promising high specific energy alternatives to Li-ion batteries. The growth and dissolution of alkali metal oxides such as Li2O2 in Li-O2 batteries and NaO2 and KO2 in Na- and K-O2 batteries, respectively, is central to the discharge and charge processes in these batteries. However, crystal growth and dissolution of the discharge products, especially in aprotic electrolytes, is poorly understood. In this work, we chose the growth of NaO2 in Na-O2 batteries as a model system and show that there is a strong correlation between the electrolyte salt concentration and the NaO2 crystal size. With a combination of experiments and theory, we argue that the correlation is a direct manifestation of the strong cation-anion interactions leading to decreased crystal growth rate at high salt concentrations. Further, we propose and experimentally demonstrate that cation-coordinating crown molecules are suitable electrochemically stable electrolyte additives that weaken ion-pairing and enhance discharge capacities in metal-oxygen batteries while not negatively affecting their rechargeability.Comment: 13 Pages, 4 Figures, 14 pages of Supplementary Informatio

    Generation of mature T cells from human hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in artificial thymic organoids

    Studies of human T cell development require robust model systems that recapitulate the full span of thymopoiesis, from hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) through to mature T cells. Existing in vitro models induce T cell commitment from human HSPCs; however, differentiation into mature CD3^+TCR-αβ^+ single-positive CD8^+ or CD4^+ cells is limited. We describe here a serum-free, artificial thymic organoid (ATO) system that supports efficient and reproducible in vitro differentiation and positive selection of conventional human T cells from all sources of HSPCs. ATO-derived T cells exhibited mature naive phenotypes, a diverse T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire and TCR-dependent function. ATOs initiated with TCR-engineered HSPCs produced T cells with antigen-specific cytotoxicity and near-complete lack of endogenous TCR Vβ expression, consistent with allelic exclusion of Vβ-encoding loci. ATOs provide a robust tool for studying human T cell differentiation and for the future development of stem-cell-based engineered T cell therapies
