    Outbreak of encephalitic listeriosis in red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa)

    An outbreak of neurological disease was investigated in red-legged partridges between 8 and 28 days of age. Clinical signs included torticollis, head tilt and incoordination and over an initial eight day period approximately 30–40 fatalities occurred per day. No significant gross post mortem findings were detected. Histopathological examination of the brain and bacterial cultures followed by partial sequencing confirmed a diagnosis of encephalitis due to Listeria monocytogenes. Further isolates were obtained from follow-up carcasses, environmental samples and pooled tissue samples of newly imported day-old chicks prior to placement on farm. These isolates had the same antibiotic resistance pattern as the isolate of the initial post mortem submission and belonged to the same fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism (fAFLP) subtype. This suggested that the isolates were very closely related or identical and that the pathogen had entered the farm with the imported day-old chicks, resulting in disease manifestation in partridges between 8 and 28 days of age. Reports of outbreaks of encephalitic listeriosis in avian species are rare and this is to the best of our knowledge the first reported outbreak in red-legged partridges

    Implementation of the Crisis Resolution Team model in adult mental health settings: a systematic review.

    Crisis Resolution Teams (CRTs) aim to offer an alternative to hospital admission during mental health crises, providing rapid assessment, home treatment, and facilitation of early discharge from hospital. CRTs were implemented nationally in England following the NHS Plan of 2000. Single centre studies suggest CRTs can reduce hospital admissions and increase service users' satisfaction: however, there is also evidence that model implementation and outcomes vary considerably. Evidence on crucial characteristics of effective CRTs is needed to allow team functioning to be optimised. This review aims to establish what evidence, if any, is available regarding the characteristics of effective and acceptable CRTs

    Suprathermal plasma observed on STS-3 Mission by plasma diagnostics package

    Artificially produced electron beams were used extensively during the past decade as a means of probing the magnetosphere, and more recently as a means of actively controlling spacecraft potential. Experimentation in these areas has proven valuable, yet at times confusing, due to the interaction of the electron beam with the ambient plasma. The OSS-1/STS-3 Mission in March 1982 provided a unique opportunity to study beam-plasma interactions at an altitude of 240 km. On board for this mission was a Fast Pulse Electron Generator (FPEG). Measurements made by the Plasma Diagnostics Package (PDP) while extended on the Orbiter RMS show modifications of the ion and electron energy distributions during electron beam injection. Observations made by charged particle detectors are discussed and related to measurements of Orbiter potential. Several of the PDP instruments, the joint PDP/FPEG experiment, and observations made during electron beam injection are described

    A geometric view of cryptographic equation solving

    This paper considers the geometric properties of the Relinearisation algorithm and of the XL algorithm used in cryptology for equation solving. We give a formal description of each algorithm in terms of projective geometry, making particular use of the Veronese variety. We establish the fundamental geometrical connection between the two algorithms and show how both algorithms can be viewed as being equivalent to the problem of finding a matrix of low rank in the linear span of a collection of matrices, a problem sometimes known as the MinRank problem. Furthermore, we generalise the XL algorithm to a geometrically invariant algorithm, which we term the GeometricXL algorithm. The GeometricXL algorithm is a technique which can solve certain equation systems that are not easily soluble by the XL algorithm or by Groebner basis methods

    Staling in two canned lager beers stored at different temperatures from sensory analyses and consumer ranking

    Two canned lagers, lager A (5% abv with late hop character) and lager B (4% abv) stored for 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days at 4, 12, 30 and 37°C were scored by trained sensory assessors (10) for liking and stale and related attributes of: cabbagy, cardboard, catty, grainy, honey, leathery, metallic, musty, skunky, and sour. Principal component analysis explained 80% data variance in 3 significant (p < 0.05) and 75% in 4 significant factors for A and B, respectively. In both lagers, aging correlated significantly with stale, cabbagy and musty and in A with metallic and sour and in B with catty and skunky. Partial least squares regression (PLS1) models showed good explanations: stale had regression coefficients of 0.88 (calibration) and 0.84 (validation) for A, and 0.96 and 0.91 respectively, for B; for liking 0.92 and 0.90 for A and 0.96 and 0.93 for B. For both lagers, liking was positively correlated with honey and grainy, and inversely with staling attributes. Lagers from 30°C were ranked for liking by 40 consumers against fresh as a hidden reference. Significant (p = 0.05) ranking of A, but not B, correlated with that of trained assessors

    Relationships of overall estery aroma character in lagers with volatile headspace congener concentrations

    In lager beers the intensity of “estery” aroma character is re-garded as an important component of sensory quality, but its origins are somewhat uncertain. Overall “estery” aroma intensity was predicted from capillary gas chromatographic (GC) data following solid phase micro extraction (SPME) of headspaces. Estery character was scored in 23 commercial lagers using rank-rating, allowing assessors (13) constant access to a range of appropriate standards. From univariate data analysis, all asses-sors behaved similarly and lagers fell into three significantly different groups: low (1), high (1) and intermediate (21). The quantification of 36 flavour volatiles by SPME of headspaces was reproducible and principal component analysis explained 91% total variance. Multiple linear regression could utilise only a restricted (26) set of flavour volatiles, whereas partial least square regression, that considered all flavour components, showed significant differences and improved prediction. How-ever, an artificial neural network that could compensate for non-linearities and interactions in ester perception gave the most robust prediction at R2 = 0.88

    Survey and significance of filamentous fungi from tap water

    Fungi in drinking water are involved in the production of tastes and odours in water. Health problems are possible, originating from mycotoxins, animal pathogens and allergies. This report concerns the surveillance of mesophilic fungi in tap water and assessment of their potential for causing problems. The methods for the determination of the filamentous fungi (ff) were filtering, swabbing and baiting. Tap water, half-strength corn meal, neopeptone–glucose rose Bengal aureomycin (NGRBA) and oomycete selective agars for the enumeration of colony forming units (cfu) were used. Samples were taken consecutively over 16 months. Filtration and NGRBA gave the highest ff counts. A total of 340 taxa were isolated. There appeared to be a negative correlation between bacterial and yeast (b/y) and ff counts. Highest counts were found in winter months for ff and in the warmer months for b/y. Penicillium (40.6%) and Acremonium (38.8%) were the most frequently isolated ff. There was a difference in the pattern of isolation of the key taxa with season: penicillia predominated in early summer and Acremonium in winter. P. expansum was isolated in high numbers in May 2004. This species is associated with the production of the mycotoxin patulin and the odour secondary metabolite geosmin. P. brevicompactum was detected throughout the sampling period and is known to produce the immunosuppressive drug mycophenolic acid. Acremonium is associated with ocentol production which is responsible for bad tastes and flavours. The remaining taxa were Phialophora sp. (4.1%), Cladosporium sp. (3.5%), Rhizopus stolonifer (2.9%), Chaetomium sp. (0.6%), Alternaria sp. (0.3%), Aspergillus sp. (0.3%), mycelia sterilia (2.6%) and unidentified (6.2%). It is emphasised that few Aspergillus and no Fusarium strains were isolated. Rhizopus stolonifer was obtained.     Mycological examination and biofilm formation in drinking water

    This study reports the presence of filamentous fungi (ff) in drinking water including biofilms. Ff are not studied ufficiently in drinking water. Ff were highest in winter and had an indirect relation with other microorganisms. Pathogenic fungi were not observed at the mesophilic temperatures used. Penicillium expansum and P. brevicompactum were observed which may affect biofilms by mycotoxin production.
