    Nitrogen Incorporation in CH_4-N_2 Photochemical Aerosol Produced by Far Ultraviolet Irradiation

    Nitrile incorporation into Titan aerosol accompanying hydrocarbon chemistry is thought to be driven by extreme UV wavelengths (λ120 nm is presently unaccounted for in atmospheric photochemical models. We suggest that reaction with CH radicals produced from CH_4 photolysis may provide a mechanism for incorporating N into the molecular structure of the aerosol. Further work is needed to understand the chemistry involved, as these processes may have significant implications for how we view prebiotic chemistry on early Earth and similar planets.     How Much Longer Will it Take? A Ten-year Review of the Implementation of United Nations General Assembly Resolutions 61/105, 64/72 and 66/68 on the Management of Bottom Fisheries in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction

    The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2002 adopted the first in a series of resolutions regarding the conservation of biodiversity in the deep sea. Prompted by seriousconcerns raised by scientists, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and numerous States,these resolutions progressively committed States to act both individually and through regional fishery management organizations (RFMOs) to either manage bottom fisheries in areas beyond national jurisdiction to prevent significant adverse impacts on deep-sea species, ecosystems and biodiversity or else prohibit bottom fishing from taking place.Ten years have passed since the adoption of resolution 61/105 in 2006, calling on States to take a set of specific actions to manage bottom fisheries in areas beyond national jurisdiction to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) from the adverse impacts of bottom fishing and ensure the sustainability of deep-sea fish stocks. Despite the considerable progress by some RFMOs, there remain significant gaps in the implementation of key elements and commitments in the resolutions. The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC) has prepared this report to assist the UNGA in its review in 2016 and to address the following question: How effectively have the resolutions been implemented

    Influence of Stem Cutting and Glyphosate Treatment of Lonicera maackii, an Exotic and Invasive Species, on Stem Regrowth and Native Species Richness

    Lonicera maackii (Rupr.) Herder (Caprifoliaceae), Amur honeysuckle, is an exotic and invasive species in the United States that has quickly overtaken disturbed habitats in the eastern and midwestern United States, as well as in Ontario, Canada. A reduction of light due to its dense canopy, extended growing season compared to native species, and production of numerous basal sprouts allow L. maackii to outcompete its native counterparts. Eradication of this species can be difficult and time-consuming. This research was undertaken to identify how L. maackii influences species diversity and species re-establishment and to determine an efficient and effective eradication method. A study was designed to determine if L. maackii inhibited species diversity, if the removal of L. maackii would increase species diversity by reopening the canopy, and if mechanical removal or mechanical removal coupled with glyphosate treatment could be used effectively for its long-term eradication. It was found that L. maackii removal increased species diversity, and mechanical removal coupled with the application of glyphosate is an effective and relatively simple method for eradicating L. maackii, while mechanical stem removal alone simply delayed its growth

    Gravitational waves from inspiraling compact binaries: Validity of the stationary-phase approximation to the Fourier transform

    We prove that the oft-used stationary-phase method gives a very accurate expression for the Fourier transform of the gravitational-wave signal produced by an inspiraling compact binary. We give three arguments. First, we analytically calculate the next-order correction to the stationary-phase approximation, and show that it is small. This calculation is essentially an application of the steepest-descent method to evaluate integrals. Second, we numerically compare the stationary-phase expression to the results obtained by Fast Fourier Transform. We show that the differences can be fully attributed to the windowing of the time series, and that they have nothing to do with an intrinsic failure of the stationary-phase method. And third, we show that these differences are negligible for the practical application of matched filtering.Comment: 8 pages, ReVTeX, 4 figure

    Gravitational Wave Chirp Search: Economization of PN Matched Filter Bank via Cardinal Interpolation

    The final inspiral phase in the evolution of a compact binary consisting of black holes and/or neutron stars is among the most probable events that a network of ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detectors is likely to observe. Gravitational radiation emitted during this phase will have to be dug out of noise by matched-filtering (correlating) the detector output with a bank of several 10510^5 templates, making the computational resources required quite demanding, though not formidable. We propose an interpolation method for evaluating the correlation between template waveforms and the detector output and show that the method is effective in substantially reducing the number of templates required. Indeed, the number of templates needed could be a factor 4\sim 4 smaller than required by the usual approach, when the minimal overlap between the template bank and an arbitrary signal (the so-called {\it minimal match}) is 0.97. The method is amenable to easy implementation, and the various detector projects might benefit by adopting it to reduce the computational costs of inspiraling neutron star and black hole binary search.Comment: scheduled for publicatin on Phys.     Unfinished Business: a Review of the Implementation of the Provisions of United Nations General Assembly Resolutions 61/105 and 64/72, Related to the Management of Bottom Fisheries in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction

    In 2006 the General Assembly adopted resolution 61/105, based on a compromise proposal offered by deep-sea fishing nations, which committed States and regional fisheries management organisations [RFMOs] to take specific measures to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems [VMEs] from the adverse impacts of bottom fisheries in the high seas and to ensure the longterm sustainability of deep-sea fish stocks. These measures included conducting impact assessments to determine whether significant adverse impacts[SAIs] to VMEs would occur, managing fisheries to prevent SAIs on VMEs, and closing areas of the high seas to bottom fishing where VMEs are known or likely to occur, unless regulations are in place to prevent SAIs and to manage sustainably deep-sea fish stocks. Based on a review in 2009 of the actions taken by States and RFMOS, the UNGA adoptedresolution 64/72 that reaffirmed resolution 61/105 and strengthened the call for action through committing States, inter alia, to ensure that vessels do not engage in bottom fishing until impact assessments have been carried out and to not authorise bottom fishing activities until the measures in resolutions 64/72 and 61/105 have been adopted andimplemented

    Spin effects in gravitational radiation backreaction III. Compact binaries with two spinning components

    The secular evolution of a spinning, massive binary system in eccentric orbit is analyzed, expanding and generalizing our previous treatments of the Lense-Thirring motion and the one-spin limit. The spin-orbit and spin-spin effects up to the 3/2 post-Newtonian order are considered, both in the equations of motion and in the radiative losses. The description of the orbit in terms of the true anomaly parametrization provides a simple averaging technique, based on the residue theorem, over eccentric orbits. The evolution equations of the angle variables characterizing the relative orientation of the spin and orbital angular momenta reveal a speed-up effect due to the eccentricity. The dissipative evolutions of the relevant dynamical and angular variables is presented in the form of a closed system of differential equations.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

    An X-ray and Optical Investigation of the Environments Around Nearby Radio Galaxies

    Investigations of the cluster environment of radio sources have not shown a correlation between radio power and degree of clustering. However, it has been demonstrated that extended X-ray luminosity and galaxy clustering do exhibit a positive correlation. This study investigates a complete sample of 25 nearby (z less than 0.06) radio galaxies which are not cataloged members of Abell clusters. The environment of these radio galaxies is studied in both the X-ray and the optical by means of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS), ROSAT pointed observations, and the Palomar optical Digitized Sky Survey (DSS). X-ray luminosities and extents are determined from the RASS, and the DSS is used to quantify the degree of clustering via the spatial two-point correlation coefficient, Bgg. Of the 25 sources, 20 are greater than sigma detections in the X-ray and 11 possessed Bgg's significantly in excess of that expected for an isolated galaxy. Adding the criterion that the X-ray emission be resolved, 10 of the radio galaxies do appear to reside in poor clusters with extended X-ray emission suggestive of the presence of an intracluster medium. Eight of these galaxies also possess high spatial correlation coefficients. Taken together, these data suggest that the radio galaxies reside in a low richness extension of the Abell clusters. The unresolved X-ray emission from the other galaxies is most likely associated with AGN phenomena. Furthermore, although the sample size is small, it appears that the environments of FR I and FR II sources differ. FR I's tend to be more frequently associated with extended X-ray emission (10 of 18), whereas FR II's are typically point sources or non-detections in the X-ray (none of the 7 sources exhibit extended X-ray emission).Comment: 28 page postscript file including figures and tables, plus one landscape table and 5 GIF figure

    Allochthonous matter : an important factor shaping the phytoplankton community in the Baltic Sea

    It is well-known that nutrients shape phytoplankton communities in marine systems, but in coastal waters allochthonous dissolved organic matter (ADOM) may also be of central importance. We studied how humic substances (proxy of ADOM) and other variables influenced the nutritional strategies, size structure and pigment content of the phytoplankton community along a south-north gradient in the Baltic Sea. During the summer, the proportion of mixotrophs increased gradually from the phosphorus-rich south to the ADOM-rich north, probably due to ADOM-fueled microbes. The opposite trend was observed for autotrophs. The chlorophyll a (Chl a): carbon (C) ratio increased while the levels of photoprotective pigments decreased from south to north, indicating adaptation to the darker humic-rich water in the north. Picocyanobacteria dominated in phosphorusrich areas while nanoplankton increased in ADOM- rich areas. During the winter-spring the phytoplankton biomass and concentrations of photoprotective pigments were low, and no trends with respect to autotrophs and mixotrophs were observed. Microplankton was the dominant size group in the entire study area. We conclude that changes in the size structure of the phytoplankton community, the Chl a: C ratio and the concentrations of photoprotective pigments are indicative of changes in ADOM, a factor of particular importance in a changing climate.Peer reviewe
