    Monte Carlo study of the evaporation/condensation transition on different Ising lattices

    In 2002 Biskup et al. [Europhys. Lett. 60, 21 (2002)] sketched a rigorous proof for the behavior of the 2D Ising lattice gas, at a finite volume and a fixed excess \delta M of particles (spins) above the ambient gas density (spontaneous magnetisation). By identifying a dimensionless parameter \Delta (\delta M) and a universal constant \Delta_c, they showed in the limit of large system sizes that for \Delta < \Delta_c the excess is absorbed in the background (``evaporated'' system), while for \Delta > \Delta_c a droplet of the dense phase occurs (``condensed'' system). To check the applicability of the analytical results to much smaller, practically accessible system sizes, we performed several Monte Carlo simulations for the 2D Ising model with nearest-neighbour couplings on a square lattice at fixed magnetisation M. Thereby, we measured the largest minority droplet, corresponding to the condensed phase, at various system sizes (L=40, >..., 640). With analytic values for for the spontaneous magnetisation m_0, the susceptibility \chi and the Wulff interfacial free energy density \tau_W for the infinite system, we were able to determine \lambda numerically in very good agreement with the theoretical prediction. Furthermore, we did simulations for the spin-1/2 Ising model on a triangular lattice and with next-nearest-neighbour couplings on a square lattice. Again, finding a very good agreement with the analytic formula, we demonstrate the universal aspects of the theory with respect to the underlying lattice. For the case of the next-nearest-neighbour model, where \tau_W is unknown analytically, we present different methods to obtain it numerically by fitting to the distribution of the magnetisation density P(m).Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, 1 tabl

    Spontaneous Breakdown of Superhydrophobicity

    In some cases water droplets can completely wet micro-structured superhydrophobic surfaces. The {\it dynamics} of this rapid process is analyzed by ultra-high-speed imaging. Depending on the scales of the micro-structure, the wetting fronts propagate smoothly and circularly or -- more interestingly -- in a {\it stepwise} manner, leading to a growing {\it square-shaped} wetted area: entering a new row perpendicular to the direction of front propagation takes milliseconds, whereas once this has happened, the row itself fills in microseconds ({\it ``zipping''})Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Anisotropic Coarsening: Grain Shapes and Nonuniversal Persistence

    We solve a coarsening system with small but arbitrary anisotropic surface tension and interface mobility. The resulting size-dependent growth shapes are significantly different from equilibrium microcrystallites, and have a distribution of grain sizes different from isotropic theories.     Front Stability in Mean Field Models of Diffusion Limited Growth

    We present calculations of the stability of planar fronts in two mean field models of diffusion limited growth. The steady state solution for the front can exist for a continuous family of velocities, we show that the selected velocity is given by marginal stability theory. We find that naive mean field theory has no instability to transverse perturbations, while a threshold mean field theory has such a Mullins-Sekerka instability. These results place on firm theoretical ground the observed lack of the dendritic morphology in naive mean field theory and its presence in threshold models. The existence of a Mullins-Sekerka instability is related to the behavior of the mean field theories in the zero-undercooling limit.Comment: 26 pp. revtex, 7 uuencoded ps figures. submitted to PR

    Researcher Degrees of Freedom in the Psychology of Religion

    There is a push in psychology toward more transparent practices, stemming partially as a response to the replication crisis. We argue that the psychology of religion should help lead the way toward these new, more transparent practices to ensure a robust and dynamic subfield. One of the major issues that proponents of Open Science practices hope to address is researcher degrees of freedom (RDF). We pre-registered and conducted a systematic review of the 2017 issues from three psychology of religion journals. We aimed to identify the extent to which the psychology of religion has embraced Open Science practices and the role of RDF within the subfield. We found that many of the methodologies that help to increase transparency, such as pre-registration, have yet to be adopted by those in the subfield. In light of these findings, we present recommendations for addressing the issue of transparency in the psychology of religion and outline how to move toward these new Open Science practices

    Spongivory in the Wakatobi Marine National Park, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia

    Sponges are functionally important coral reef fauna and there is strong evidence from the Caribbean that predation has important impacts on sponge-Assemblage dynamics; whether the same is true for Indo-Pacific sponges remains unknown. As a first step toward understanding the potential effects of spongivores on sponge diversity and abundance, we identified sponge predators at nine sites in Wakatobi Marine National Park, Indonesia, and conducted a short-Term caging experiment to examine the effects of excluding predators on noncryptic reef sponges at this location. Nudibranchs were the most abundant invertebrate spongivores, although their low densities are likely to limit their influence on sponges. Fish were the most abundant vertebrate spongivores with 16 species from six families observed feeding on sponges. Based on their abundance and our feeding observations, the fish with the greatest potential to influence sponge assemblages in Wakatobi Marine National Park were Zanclus cornutus, Chaetodon kleinii, Pygoplites diacanthus, and Pomacanthus sexstriatus. We did not detect an effect of excluding spongivores on noncryptic reef sponge abundance in our caging experiment, which may be due to these species having evolved chemical defenses against predators. Important areas for further research include the chemical ecology of Indo-Pacific sponges and whether spongivory currently restricts some species to cryptic or nonreef habitats

    Spectral fiber dosimetry with beryllium oxide for quality assurance in hadron radiation therapy

    Using the radioluminescence light of solid state probes coupled to long and flexible fibers for dosimetry in radiotherapy offers many advantages in terms of probe size, robustness and cost efficiency. However, especially in hadron fields, radioluminophores exhibit quenching effects dependent on the linear energy transfer. This work describes the discovery of a spectral shift in the radioluminescence light of beryllium oxide in dependence on the residual range at therapeutic proton energies. A spectrally resolving measurement setup has been developed and tested in scanned proton fields. It is shown that such a system can not only quantitatively reconstruct the dose, but might also give information on the residual proton range at the point of measurement

    Rigorous Probabilistic Analysis of Equilibrium Crystal Shapes

    The rigorous microscopic theory of equilibrium crystal shapes has made enormous progress during the last decade. We review here the main results which have been obtained, both in two and higher dimensions. In particular, we describe how the phenomenological Wulff and Winterbottom constructions can be derived from the microscopic description provided by the equilibrium statistical mechanics of lattice gases.
