Alterations in vascular function in primary aldosteronism - a cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging study
Introduction: Excess aldosterone is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Aldosterone has a permissive effect on vascular fibrosis. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) allows study of vascular function by measuring aortic distensibility. We compared aortic distensibility in primary aldosteronism (PA), essential hypertension (EH) and normal controls and explored the relationship between aortic distensibility and pulse wave velocity (PWV).<p></p>
Methods: We studied PA (n=14) and EH (n=33) subjects and age-matched healthy controls (n=17) with CMR, including measurement of aortic distensibility, and measured PWV using applanation tonometry. At recruitment, PA and EH patients had similar blood pressure and left ventricular mass.<p></p>
Results: Subjects with PA had significantly lower aortic distensibilty and higher PWV compared to EH and healthy controls. These changes were independent of other factors associated with reduced aortic distensibility, including aging. There was a significant relationship between increasing aortic stiffness and age in keeping with physical and vascular aging. As expected, aortic distensibility and PWV were closely correlated.<p></p>
Conclusion: These results demonstrate that PA patients display increased arterial stiffness compared to EH, independent of vascular aging. The implication is that aldosterone invokes functional impairment of arterial function. The long-term implications of arterial stiffening in aldosterone excess require further study.<p></p>
Mycotoxin production from fungi isolated from grapes
Aims: In order to assess the potential for producing mycotoxins, fungi were isolated from
wine producing grapes.
Methods and Results: The isolates were identified and Penicillium expansum, the most well
recognized mycotoxin producer, was analysed for mycotoxin production by TLC. Many of the
strains produced patulin and/or citrinin, often depending on whether they were grown on a
grape or yeast extract sucrose media.
Conclusions: Citrinin was produced by all strains grown in the yeast extract sucrose medium,
but only one strain (from 51) was able to produce this compound in grape juice medium.
Patulin was produced in the yeast extract medium by 20 strains and in grape juice medium by
33 strains.
Significance and Impact of the Study: The presence of mycotoxins in wine producing
grapes is discussed. Grapes contamination with patulin seems not to contribute to wine

Factors associated with rifampin resistance in staphylococcal periprosthetic joint infections (PJI): a matched case-control study
Purpose: Rifampin combination therapy plays an important role in the management of staphylococcal periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). However, the emergence of rifampin resistance is a feared complication. We retrospectively analysed predetermined potential risk factors in patients with rifampin-resistant staphylococcal PJI in a multicentre case-control study. Methods: Cases (n=48) were defined as PJI caused by rifampin-resistant staphylococci. Rifampin-susceptible controls (n=48) were matched for microorganism and type of prosthetic joint. Uni- and multivariable conditional logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: Forty-eight cases (31 men; median age 67years; age range 39-88years) with hip- (n=29), knee- (n=13), elbow- (n=4), shoulder- (n=1) or ankle-PJI (n=1) were enrolled in the study. Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci were isolated in ten and 38 episodes, respectively. Most of the cases (n=44, 92%) had a previous PJI, and 93 % (n=41) of these had been treated with rifampin. There was an independent association of emergence of rifampin resistance with male sex (OR 3.6, 95% CI 1.2-11),≥3 previous surgical revisions (OR 4.7, 95% CI 1.6-14.2), PJI treatment with high initial bacterial load (inadequate surgical debridement, <2weeks of intravenous treatment of the combination medication; OR 4.9, 95% CI 1.6-15) and inadequate rifampin therapy (OR 5.4, 95% CI 1.2-25). Dephasing of Electrons by Two-Level Defects in Quantum Dots
The electron dephasing time in a diffusive quantum dot is
calculated by considering the interaction between the electron and dynamical
defects, modelled as two-level system. Using the standard tunneling model of
glasses, we obtain a linear temperature dependence of ,
consistent with the experimental observation. However, we find that, in order
to obtain dephasing times on the order of nanoseconds, the number of two-level
defects needs to be substantially larger than the typical concentration in
glasses. We also find a finite system-size dependence of , which
can be used to probe the effectiveness of surface-aggregated defects.Comment: two-column 9 page
Zero Frequency Current Noise for the Double Tunnel Junction Coulomb Blockade
We compute the zero frequency current noise numerically and in several limits
analytically for the coulomb blockade problem consisting of two tunnel
junctions connected in series. At low temperatures over a wide range of
voltages, capacitances, and resistances it is shown that the noise measures the
variance in the number of electrons in the region between the two tunnel
junctions. The average current, on the other hand, only measures the mean
number of electrons. Thus, the noise provides additional information about
transport in these devices which is not available from measuring the current

Single and double qubit gates by manipulating degeneracy
A novel mechanism is proposed for single and double qubit state manipulations
in quantum computation with four-fold degenerate energy levels. The principle
is based on starting with a four fold degeneracy, lifting it stepwise
adiabatically by a set of control parameters and performing the quantum gate
operations on non-degenerate states. A particular realization of the proposed
mechanism is suggested by using inductively coupled rf-squid loops in the
macroscopic quantum tunnelling regime where the energy eigen levels are
directly connected with the measurable flux states. The one qubit and two qubit
controlled operations are demonstrated explicitly. The appearance of the flux
states also allows precise read-in and read-out operations by the measurement

Localized helium excitations in 4He_N-benzene clusters
We compute ground and excited state properties of small helium clusters 4He_N
containing a single benzene impurity molecule. Ground-state structures and
energies are obtained for N=1,2,3,14 from importance-sampled, rigid-body
diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC). Excited state energies due to helium vibrational
motion near the molecule surface are evaluated using the projection operator,
imaginary time spectral evolution (POITSE) method. We find excitation energies
of up to ~23 K above the ground state. These states all possess vibrational
character of helium atoms in a highly anisotropic potential due to the aromatic
molecule, and can be categorized in terms of localized and collective
vibrational modes. These results appear to provide precursors for a transition
from localized to collective helium excitations at molecular nanosubstrates of
increasing size. We discuss the implications of these results for analysis of
anomalous spectral features in recent spectroscopic studies of large aromatic

Dephasing of coupled spin qubit system during gate operations due to background charge fluctuations
It has been proposed that a quantum computer can be constructed based on
electron spins in quantum dots or based on a superconducting nanocircuit.
During two-qubit operations, the fluctuation of the coupling parameters is a
critical factor. One source of such fluctuation is the stirring of the
background charges. We focused on the influence of this fluctuation on a
coupled spin qubit system. The induced fluctuation in exchange coupling changes
the amount of entanglement, fidelity, and purity. In our previous study, the
background charge fluctuations were found to be an important channel of

Quantum Films Adsorbed on Graphite: Third and Fourth Helium Layers
Using a path-integral Monte Carlo method for simulating superfluid quantum
films, we investigate helium layers adsorbed on a substrate consisting of
graphite plus two solid helium layers. Our results for the promotion densities
and the dependence of the superfluid density on coverage are in agreement with
experiment. We can also explain certain features of the measured heat capacity
