    Moment Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Signals

    A relation is given between the moments of a generalized convolution transform of a function, and the moments of the function itself. This relation is applied to the signal obtained with a field‐modulated EPR spectrometer, a consequence being that the integrated intensity of an absorption line may be obtained from first moment measurements at any modulation amplitude, regardless of line shape or various instrumental nonidealities. This result has been verified experimentally to within a few percent with a Varian EPR spectrometer. Extension to measurement of higher moments is discussed

    Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia intestinalis in Calf Diarrhoea in Sweden

    The objective of this study conducted in 75 herds was to investigate the presence and significance of Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia intestinalis in Swedish dairy calves in comparison with rotavirus, coronavirus and Escherichia coli K99+. The farmers were asked to collect faecal samples from each heifer calf that had diarrhoea between birth and 90 days of age, and also from a healthy calf of the same age. In total, 270 samples were collected and analysed. C. parvum, either alone or together with G. intestinalis and/or rotavirus, was detected in 16 (11%) and 6 (5%) of the samples from diarrhoeic and healthy calves, respectively. Even though a higher proportion of diarrhoeic calves shed C. parvum, the difference between the groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.067), possibly due to the low number of positive samples. G. intestinalis was found in 42 (29%) of the diarrhoea samples and in 29 (23%) of the samples from healthy calves. Rotavirus and coronavirus were demonstrated in 24% and 3% of the diarrhoea samples, respectively, whereas E. coli K99+ was only found in samples from 2 healthy calves. C. parvum and G. intestinalis were found in samples from calves 7 to 84 days of age and during all seasons. The results confirm that C. parvum is present in Swedish dairy herds and might have clinical significance. G. intestinalis was the most common agent found but the importance of this parasite remains unclear. Both parasites have suggested zoonotic potential and thus warrant further attention. In addition, rotavirus is a major pathogen in neonatal enteritis in Sweden, whereas coronavirus and E. coli K99+ seem to be of less importance

    Monte Carlo Calculations on Electron Backscattering in Amorphous or Polycrystalline Targets

    We propose an application of the Monte Carlo method in the field of backscattering. The results obtained for incident electron energies ranging from 0.3 to 3 MeV and for targets of Al, Cu, Ag and Au are compared with experimental values from several sources. An electron travelling through matter undergoes successive collisions between which it is assumed to travel in a straight line. In our case, we consider the elementary process of interaction electron-nucleus; we have used analytical models for the scattering cross-sections. In order to follow the electron through the specimen, we divide the real trajectory into elements of length much smaller than the mean free path. Pseudo-random number process permits us to determine whether or not an interaction occurs, also the type of interaction. For the energy losses, we introduced a relation derived from Landau\u27s theory. We then followed the electron until it is emerged from the material or halted. The backscattering coefficients obtained for thin and thick targets as a function of the incident electron energy are in good agreement with the experimental data. We have introduced the depth distribution function of the backscattered electrons, which allows us to test the predictions of various theoretical models proposed by other authors

    The control of the formation of crystals in biological fluids is one of the most exciting field of research involving both organic and biochemical areas. Many organisms have evolved mechanisms which minimize or avoid the effects of nucleation and crystal growth formation. One of the most important mechanism is the interaction of specific proteins, called inhibitors, with crystals which alters their habits and leads to their elimination. This article, focused on saliva, pancreatic juice and bile, reviews our present knowledge on the structure-function relationships existing between these proteins and their ability to inhibit the growth of different calcium salt crystals

    Integrated architectures for computer vision : Automatic synthesis with three examples

    Computer aided computer design is an open problem because computers are becoming more and more powerfull, more and more complex and .. smaller. We explain what "automatic (high-level) synthesis of integrated circuits" means . It is now feasible and necessary for computer vision dedicated architectures in particular. Since it requires an optimization within an ill-formalized and ill-defined design space, we describe the experimental method aiming at : 1) proving the existence of a solution for each application case, 2) finding and instanciating the optimization parameters - including the initial state -,3) effectively designing an integrated circuit and 4) redesigning the solutions for more complex architectures to still meet real-time constraints . The method is self-illustrated with three increasingly complex examples all along this paper.La construction automatique d'ordinateur assistée par ordinateur C(AO)2 est un problème ouvert parce que ceux-ci deviennent de plus en plus puissants, donc plus complexes et... plus petits. Nous expliquons ce qu'est la synthèse automatique de circuits intégrés dite de « haut niveau », technique désormais plausible et nécessaire notamment pour les architectures spécialisées en vision par ordinateur. S'agissant d'une optimisation dans un ensemble difficile à formaliser et à circonscrire nous décrivons la démarche expérimentale suivie afin de : 1) prouver l'existence d'une solution par cas d'application, 2) déterminer les paramètres de l'optimisation, dont l'état initial, et les instancier, 3) concevoir effectivement un circuit et 4) retraiter les solutions pour des architectures progressivement plus complexes n'en respectant pas moins des contraintes de temps réel. La démarche s'illustre par elle-même selon trois exemples de difficulté croissante qui jalonnent cet article

    Abel-Jacobi maps for hypersurfaces and non commutative Calabi-Yau's

    It is well known that the Fano scheme of lines on a cubic 4-fold is a symplectic variety. We generalize this fact by constructing a closed p-form with p=2n-4 on the Fano scheme of lines on a (2n-2)-dimensional hypersurface Y of degree n. We provide several definitions of this form - via the Abel-Jacobi map, via Hochschild homology, and via the linkage class, and compute it explicitly for n = 4. In the special case of a Pfaffian hypersurface Y we show that the Fano scheme is birational to a certain moduli space of sheaves on a p-dimensional Calabi--Yau variety X arising naturally in the context of homological projective duality, and that the constructed form is induced by the holomorphic volume form on X. This remains true for a general non Pfaffian hypersurface but the dual Calabi-Yau becomes non commutative.Comment: 34 pages; exposition of Hochschild homology expanded; references added; introduction re-written; some imrecisions, typos and the orbit diagram in the last section correcte

    Geometric Generalisations of SHAKE and RATTLE

    A geometric analysis of the Shake and Rattle methods for constrained Hamiltonian problems is carried out. The study reveals the underlying differential geometric foundation of the two methods, and the exact relation between them. In addition, the geometric insight naturally generalises Shake and Rattle to allow for a strictly larger class of constrained Hamiltonian systems than in the classical setting. In order for Shake and Rattle to be well defined, two basic assumptions are needed. First, a nondegeneracy assumption, which is a condition on the Hamiltonian, i.e., on the dynamics of the system. Second, a coisotropy assumption, which is a condition on the geometry of the constrained phase space. Non-trivial examples of systems fulfilling, and failing to fulfill, these assumptions are given
