Detecting short periods of elevated workload. A comparison of nine workload assessment techniques
The present experiment tested the merits of 9 common workload assessment techniques with relatively short periods of workload in a car-driving task. Twelve participants drove an instrumented car and performed a visually loading task and a mentally loading task for 10, 30, and 60 s. The results show that 10-s periods of visual and mental workload can be measured successfully with subjective ratings and secondary task performance. With respect to longer loading periods (30 and 60 s), steering frequency was found to be sensitive to visual workload, and skin conductance response (SCR) was sensitive to mental workload. The results lead to preliminary guidelines that will help applied researchers to determine which techniques are best suited for assessing visual and mental workload

A Louisiana plantswoman: Margie Yates Jenkins
This biographical study of the development of Marge Yates Jenkins into Louisiana\u27s pre-eminent plantswoman examines the issues of culture and regional history, particularly the history of the horticultural industry in Louisiana. It traces how a self-taught botanist overcame the obstacles of gender and post-war depression to become an innovator in the nursery business, experimenting with native plants of the Southeast, as well as exotics imported from as far away as New Zealand. Her experiments and the plants that she introduced to the trade would eventually change the selection of plants used in the landscape industry in the Gulf Coast region. The thesis relies primarily on the method of oral history to document Jenkins\u27 life story and her impact on the professions of ornamental horticulture and landscape architecture. Her family history with its agricultural roots serves as a backdrop for her eventual entry into the field of horticulture. The thesis covers the development of horticulture in Louisiana from 1962 to 2004, and explains how Jenkins\u27 work gradually changed the way plants were viewed and used in the landscape industries. Particular emphasis is placed on Jenkins\u27 success as a plant propagator and on her introduction of new varieties of azaleas into commerce. Finally, Jenkins\u27 generous and open spirit is described as an important factor in her being able to bridge the gap between the nursery and horticulture industry, and landscape architecture theory and practice. The thesis calls upon these two aspects of landscape practice to embrace the model that Jenkins espouses in order to create landscape design that possesses the best of both the worlds of plants and design theory

class of models where the details of dynamical symmetry breaking makes it

We investigate the computational complexity of scheduling multiprocessor tasks with prespecified processor allocations. We consider two criteria: minimizing schedule length and minimizing the sum of the task completion times. In addition, we investigate the complexity of problems when precedence constraints or release dates are involved
An alternative heavy Higgs mass limit
After commenting on the present value of the Higgs particle mass from
radiative corrections, we explore the phenomenological implications of an
alternative, non-perturbative renormalization of the scalar sector where the
mass of the Higgs particle does not represent a measure of observable
interactions at the Higgs mass scale. In this approach the Higgs particle could
be very heavy, even heavier than 1 TeV, and remain nevertheless a relatively

Supersymmetric NLO QCD Corrections to Resonant Slepton Production and Signals at the Tevatron and the LHC
We compute the total cross section and the transverse momentum distribution
for single charged slepton and sneutrino production at hadronic colliders
including NLO supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric QCD corrections. The
supersymmetric QCD corrections can be substantial. We also resum the gluon
transverse momentum distribution and compare our results with two Monte Carlo
generators. We compute branching ratios of the supersymmetric decays of the
slepton and determine event rates for the like-sign dimuon final state at the

A screening mechanism for extra W and Z gauge bosons
We generalize a previous construction of a fermiophobic model to the case of
more than one extra and gauge bosons. We focus in particular on the
existence of screening configurations and their implication on the gauge boson
mass spectrum. One of these configurations allows for the existence of a set of
relatively light new gauge bosons, without violation of the quite restrictive
bounds coming from the parameter. The links with Bess and
degenerate Bess models are also discussed. Also the signal given here by this
more traditional gauge extension of the SM could help to disentangle it from
the towers of Kaluza-Klein states over and gauge bosons in extra
