Gravitational physics with antimatter
The production of low-energy antimatter provides unique opportunities to
search for new physics in an unexplored regime. Testing gravitational
interactions with antimatter is one such opportunity. Here a scenario based on
Lorentz and CPT violation in the Standard- Model Extension is considered in
which anomalous gravitational effects in antimatter could arise.Comment: 5 pages, presented at the International Conference on Exotic Atoms

CPT and Lorentz violation as signatures for Planck-scale physics
In recent years, the breakdown of spacetime symmetries has been identified as
a promising research field in the context of Planck-scale phenomenology. For
example, various theoretical approaches to the quantum-gravity problem are
known to accommodate minute violations of CPT invariance. This talk covers
various topics within this research area. In particular, some mechanisms for
spacetime-symmetry breaking as well as the Standard-Model Extension (SME) test
framework will be reviewed; the connection between CPT and Lorentz invariance
in quantum field theory will be exposed; and various experimental CPT tests
with emphasis on matter--antimatter comparisons will be discussed.Comment: 6 page
CPT and Lorentz-invariance violation
The largest gap in our understanding of nature at the fundamental level is
perhaps a unified description of gravity and quantum theory. Although there are
currently a variety of theoretical approaches to this question, experimental
research in this field is inhibited by the expected Planck-scale suppression of
quantum-gravity effects. However, the breakdown of spacetime symmetries has
recently been identified as a promising signal in this context: a number of
models for underlying physics can accommodate minuscule Lorentz and CPT
violation, and such effects are amenable to ultrahigh-precision tests. This
presentation will give an overview of the subject. Topics such as motivations,
the SME test framework, mechanisms for relativity breakdown, and experimental
tests will be reviewed. Emphasis is given to observations involving antimatter.Comment: 6 page
Secure pseudo-random linear binary sequences generators based on arithmetic polynoms
We present a new approach to constructing of pseudo-random binary sequences
(PRS) generators for the purpose of cryptographic data protection, secured from
the perpetrator's attacks, caused by generation of masses of hardware errors
and faults. The new method is based on use of linear polynomial arithmetic for
the realization of systems of boolean characteristic functions of PRS'
generators. "Arithmetizatio" of systems of logic formulas has allowed to apply
mathematical apparatus of residue systems for multisequencing of the process of
PRS generation and organizing control of computing errors, caused by hardware
faults. This has guaranteed high security of PRS generator's functioning and,
consequently, security of tools for cryptographic data protection based on
those PRSs

Solar Neutrinos: Status and Prospects
We describe the current status of solar neutrino measurements and of the
theory -- both neutrino physics and solar astrophysics -- employed in
interpreting measurements. Important recent developments include
Super-Kamiokande's determination of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering
rate for 8B neutrinos to 3%; the latest SNO global analysis in which the
inclusion of low-energy data from SNO I and II significantly narrowed the range
of allowed values for the neutrino mixing angle theta12; Borexino results for
both the 7Be and pep neutrino fluxes, the first direct measurements
constraining the rate of ppI and ppII burning in the Sun; global reanalyses of
solar neutrino data that take into account new reactor results on theta13; a
new decadal evaluation of the nuclear physics of the pp chain and CNO cycle
defining best values and uncertainties in the nuclear microphysics input to
solar models; recognition of an emerging discrepancy between two tests of solar
metallicity, helioseismological mappings of the sound speed in the solar
interior, and analyses of the metal photoabsorption lines based on our best
current description of the Sun's photosphere; a new round of standard solar
model calculations optimized to agree either with helioseismology or with the
new photospheric analysis; and, motivated by the solar abundance problem, the
development of nonstandard, accreting solar models, in order to investigate
possible consequences of the metal segregation that occurred in the proto-solar
disk. We review this progress and describe how new experiments such as SNO+
could help us further exploit neutrinos as a unique probe of stellar interiors.Comment: 82 pages, 11 figure
Effects of Top-quark Compositeness on Higgs Boson Production at the LHC
Motivated by the possibility that the right-handed top-quark (t_R) is
composite, we discuss the effects of dimension-six operators on the Higgs boson
production at the LHC. When t_R is the only composite particle among the
Standard Model (SM) particles, the (V+A)\otimes (V+A) type four-top-quark
contact interaction is expected to have the largest coefficient among the
dimension-six operators, according to the Naive Dimensional Analysis (NDA). We
find that, to lowest order in QCD and other SM interactions, the cross section
of the SM Higgs boson production via gluon fusion does not receive corrections
from one insertion of the new contact interaction vertex. We also discuss the
effects of other dimension-six operators whose coefficients are expected to be
the second and the third largest from NDA. We find that the operator which
consists of two t_R's and two SM Higgs boson doublets can recognizably change
the Higgs boson production cross section from the SM prediction if the cut-off
scale is \sim 1TeV.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. v2: explanations improved in Section 3, other

Effective Theory Approach to the Spontaneous Breakdown of Lorentz Invariance
We generalize the coset construction of Callan, Coleman, Wess and Zumino to
theories in which the Lorentz group is spontaneously broken down to one of its
subgroups. This allows us to write down the most general low-energy effective
Lagrangian in which Lorentz invariance is non-linearly realized, and to explore
the consequences of broken Lorentz symmetry without having to make any
assumptions about the mechanism that triggers the breaking. We carry out the
construction both in flat space, in which the Lorentz group is a global
spacetime symmetry, and in a generally covariant theory, in which the Lorentz
group can be treated as a local internal symmetry. As an illustration of this
formalism, we construct the most general effective field theory in which the
rotation group remains unbroken, and show that the latter is just the
Einstein-aether theory.Comment: 45 pages, no figures

The influence of the atmospheric boundary layer on nocturnal layers of noctuids and other moths migrating over southern Britain
Insects migrating at high altitude over southern Britain have been continuously monitored by automatically-operating, vertical-looking radars over a period of several years. During some occasions in the summer months, the migrants were observed to form well-defined layer concentrations, typically at heights of 200-400 m, in the stable night-time atmosphere. Under these conditions, insects are likely to have control over their vertical movements and are selecting flight heights which are favourable for long-range migration. We therefore investigated the factors influencing the formation of these insect layers by comparing radar measurements of the vertical distribution of insect density with meteorological profiles generated by the UK Met. Office’s Unified Model (UM). Radar-derived measurements of mass and displacement speed, along with data from Rothamsted Insect Survey light traps provided information on the identity of the migrants. We present here three case studies where noctuid and pyralid moths contributed substantially to the observed layers. The major meteorological factors influencing the layer concentrations appeared to be: (a) the altitude of the warmest air, (b) heights corresponding to temperature preferences or thresholds for sustained migration and (c), on nights when air temperatures are relatively high, wind-speed maxima associated with the nocturnal jet. Back-trajectories indicated that layer duration may have been determined by the distance to the coast. Overall, the unique combination of meteorological data from the UM and insect data from entomological radar described here show considerable promise for systematic studies of high-altitude insect layering
