Global Diversity of Ascidiacea
The class Ascidiacea presents fundamental opportunities for research in the fields of development, evolution, ecology, natural products and more. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge regarding the global biodiversity of the class Ascidiacea, focusing in their taxonomy, main regions of biodiversity, and distribution patterns. Based on analysis of the literature and the species registered in the online World Register of Marine Species, we assembled a list of 2815 described species. The highest number of species and families is found in the order Aplousobranchia. Didemnidae and Styelidae families have the highest number of species with more than 500 within each group. Sixty percent of described species are colonial. Species richness is highest in tropical regions, where colonial species predominate. In higher latitudes solitary species gradually contribute more to the total species richness. We emphasize the strong association between species richness and sampling efforts, and discuss the risks of invasive species. Our inventory is certainly incomplete as the ascidian fauna in many areas around the world is relatively poorly known, and many new species continue to be discovered and described each year
Cutaneous malignancies in Indigenous peoples of urban Sydney
Introduction: Despite 3% of Australians identifying as Indigenous, cutaneous malignancies in these patients, including incidence, risk factors and outcomes have not been investigated. This is despite recognition that cancer outcomes in this population are significantly poorer.
Methods: We undertook a retrospective case series of Indigenous Peoples who presented to two urban cancer therapy centres for the management of cutaneous malignancies from 2003 to 2017. Risk factors, tumour‐specific characteristics, treatments and outcomes were reviewed.
Results: Twenty‐two patients identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. The median age at presentation was 61 years and the majority were male (63.6%) and had skin phototype III (86.4%). Patients presented with basal cell carcinoma (50%), squamous cell carcinoma (31.8%), melanoma (9.1%) and cutaneous sarcomas (9.1%). The majority (68.2%) presented with stage II or higher disease, and there were high rates of immunosuppression (45.5%). At the time of reporting, 68.2% patients were alive, 18.2% had died from their skin cancers and 13.6% had died from unrelated causes.
Conclusion: This cohort has demonstrated late‐stage presentation of skin cancers, with substantial morbidity and mortality from potentially treatable cutaneous malignancies. This parallels other health conditions in Indigenous Australians and has highlighted the need for improved data collection of Indigenous status to better quantify the epidemiology of skin cancer in this population. There is an imperative to improve skin cancer awareness in this population to allow earlier detection and management to ensure better outcomes
Longer-Run Effects of Anti-Poverty Policies on Disadvantaged Neighborhoods
We estimate the longer-run effects of minimum wages, the Earned Income Tax Credit, and welfare on key economic indicators of economic self-sufficiency in disadvantaged neighborhoods. We find that the longer-run effects of the EITC are to increase employment and to reduce poverty and public assistance. We also find some evidence that higher welfare benefits had longer-run adverse effects, and quite robust evidence that tighter welfare time limits reduce poverty and public assistance in the longer run. The evidence on the long-run effects of the minimum wage on poverty and public assistance is not robust, with some evidence pointing to reductions and some to increases
