Constraints on stable equilibria with fluctuation-induced forces
We examine whether fluctuation-induced forces can lead to stable levitation.
First, we analyze a collection of classical objects at finite temperature that
contain fixed and mobile charges, and show that any arrangement in space is
unstable to small perturbations in position. This extends Earnshaw's theorem
for electrostatics by including thermal fluctuations of internal charges.
Quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field are responsible for
Casimir/van der Waals interactions. Neglecting permeabilities, we find that any
equilibrium position of items subject to such forces is also unstable if the
permittivities of all objects are higher or lower than that of the enveloping
medium; the former being the generic case for ordinary materials in vacuum.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Design of Cationic Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes as Efficient siRNA Vectors for Lung Cancer Xenograft Eradication
Polo-Like Kinase (PLK1) has been identified as a potential target in cancer gene therapy via chemical or genetic inhibitory approaches. The biomedical applications of chemically functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-CNTs) in cancer therapy have been studied due to their ability to efficiently deliver siRNA intracellularly. In this study, we established the capacity of cationic MWNT-NH3+ to deliver the apoptotic siRNA against PLK1 (siPLK1) in Calu6 tumor xenografts by direct intratumoural injections. A direct comparison with cationic liposomes was made. This study validates the PLK1 gene as a potential target in cancer gene therapy including lung cancer, as demonstrated by the therapeutic efficacy of siPLK1:MWNT-NH3+ complexes and their ability to significantly improve animal survival. Biological analysis of the siPLK1:MWNT-NH3+ treated tumors by RT-PCR and Western blot, in addition to TUNEL staining confirmed the biological functionality of the siRNA intratumourally, suggesting that tumor eradication was due to PLK1 knockdown. Furthermore, by using a fluorescently labelled, non-coding siRNA sequence complexed with MWNT-NH3+, we established for the first time that the improved therapeutic efficacy observed in f-CNT-based siRNA delivery is directly proportional to the enhanced siRNA retention in the solid tumor and subsequent uptake by tumor cells after local administration in vivo
Developing a framework for the analysis of power through depotentia
Stakeholder participation in tourism policy-making is usually perceived as providing a means of empowerment. However participatory processes drawing upon stakeholders from traditionally empowered backgrounds may provide the means of removing empowerment from stakeholders. Such an outcome would be in contradiction to the claims that participatory processes improve both inclusivity and sustainability. In order to form an understanding of the sources through which empowerment may be removed, an analytical perspective has been developed deriving from LukesĂŻÂżÂœs views of power dating from 1974. This perspective considers the concept of depotentia as the removal of ĂŻÂżÂœpower toĂŻÂżÂœ without speculating upon the underlying intent and also provides for the multidimensionality of power to be examined within a single study. The application of this analytical perspective has been tested upon findings of the government-commissioned report of the Countryside and Community Research Unit in 2005. The survey and report investigated the progress of Local Access Forums in England created in response to the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. Consideration of the data from this perspective permits the classification of individual sources of depotentia which can each be addressed and potentially enable stakeholder groups to reverse loss of empowerment where it has occurred
Optimising fusion detection through sequential DNA and RNA molecular profiling of non-small cell lung cancer
OBJECTIVES: There is an increasing number of driver fusions in NSCLC which are amenable to targeted therapy. Panel testing for fusions is increasingly appropriate but can be costly and requires adequate good quality biopsy material. In light of the typical mutual exclusivity of driver events in NSCLC, the objective of this study was to trial a novel testing pathway, supported by industrial collaboration, in which only patients negative for driver mutations on DNA-NGS were submitted for fusion panel analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over 18 months, all patients from a single centre with non-squamous NSCLC were submitted for DNA-NGS, plus ALK and ROS1 immunohistochemistry +/â FISH. Those which were negative for a driver mutation were then recalled for RNA panel testing. RESULTS: 307 samples were referred for DNA-NGS mutation analysis, of which, 10% of cases were unsuitable for or failed DNA-NGS analysis. Driver mutations were detected in 61% (167/275) of all those successfully tested. Of those without a driver mutation and with some remaining tissue available, 28% had insufficient tissue/extracted RNA or failed RNA-NGS. Of those successfully tested, 24% (17/72) had a fusion gene detected involving either ALK, ROS, MET, RET, FGFR or EGFR. Overall, 66% (184/277) of patients had a driver event detected through the combination of DNA and RNA panels. CONCLUSION: Sequential DNA and RNA based molecular profiling increased the efficacy of detecting fusion driven NSCLCs. Continued optimisation of tissue procurement, handling and the diagnostic pathways for gene fusion analysis is necessary to reduce analysis failure rates and improve detection rate for treatment with the next generation of small molecule inhibitors
Materials characterisation part II: tip geometry of the Vickers indenter for microindentation tests
This is the second of two papers by the authors associated with materials characterisation methods based on hardness testing. It is important to have knowledge of the tip geometry of the indenter employed in the hardness test as this affects the correctness of the value of contact area parameter used to determine the mechanical properties. In this paper, outcomes of a study concerned with the tip geometry of the Vickers microindenter are presented. Results from experiment are compared with results from published works and the most current accepted analytical models. A new non-contact methodology based on a residual imprint imaging process is developed and further compared with other methods using experimental and numerical analyses over a wide range of material properties. For confirmation, an assessment was undertaken using numerical dimensional analysis which permitted a large range of materials to be explored. It is shown that the proposed method is more accurate compared with other methods regardless of the mechanical properties of the material. The outcomes demonstrate that measuring contact area with the new method enhanced the overall relative error in the resulting mechanical properties including hardness and Youngâs modulus of elasticity. It is also shown that the value of the contact area using actual indenter geometry obtained from experimental load-displacement analysis or FEM numerical analysis is more accurate than the value obtained from the assumption of perfect indenter geometry and hence can be used for materials with low strain hardening property. © 2017 Springer-Verlag Londo
Partial-thickness macular hole in vitreomacular traction syndrome: a case report and review of the literature
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Vitreomacular traction syndrome has recently been recognized as a distinct clinical condition. It may lead to many complications, such as cystoid macular edema, macular pucker formation, tractional macular detachment, and full-thickness macular hole formation.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report a case of vitreomacular traction syndrome with eccentric traction at the macula and a partial-thickness macular hole in a 63-year-old Pakistani Punjabi man. The patient was evaluated using optical coherence tomography, and he underwent a successful pars plana vitrectomy. After the operation, his foveal contour regained normal configuration, and his visual acuity improved from 20/60 to 20/30.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Pars plana vitrectomy prevents the progression of a partial thickness macular hole in vitreomacular traction syndrome. The relief of traction by vitrectomy restores foveal anatomy and visual acuity in this condition.</p

fermions traveling from the symmetric to the asymmetric phases separated by the

Importance of Follow-up Imaging in the Detection of Delayed Type 2 Endoleaks Despite Complete Aneurysmal Sac Shrinkage
Type 2 endoleaks usually constitute a benign and self-limited phenomenon, which rarely leads to aneurysmal sac expansion. However, in a small subset of patients, a persistent type 2 endoleak might pressurise the aneurysmal sac causing expansion. The authors present two cases with delayed new-onset type 2 endoleak. One occurred after standard endovascular aortic repair and the other after chimney endovascular aortic repair, causing expansion of the aneurysmal sac after a period of complete aneurysmal sac shrinkage. Accordingly, there is a risk of sac re-expansion due to delayed onset endoleaks, independent of the technique, justifying the need for a continuous follow-up despite long-term aneurysmal sac shrinkage
Fracture Risk Assessment in Chronic Kidney Disease, Prospective Testing Under Real World Environments (FRACTURE): a prospective study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with an increased risk of fracture. Decreased bone mass and disruption of microarchitecture occur early in the course of CKD and worsens with the progressive decline in renal function so that at the time of initiation of dialysis at least 50% of patients have had a fracture. Despite the excess fracture risk, and the associated increases in morbidity and mortality, little is known about the factors that are associated with an increase in fracture risk. Our study aims to identify prognostic factors for bone loss and fractures in patients with stages 3 to 5 CKD.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This prospective study aims to enroll two hundred and sixty men and women with stages 3 to 5 CKD. Subjects will be followed for 24 months and we will examine the ability of: 1) bone mineral density by dual x-ray absorptiometry at the spine, hip, and radius; 2) volumetric bone density by high resolution peripheral quantitated computed tomography at the radius and tibia; 3) serum markers of bone turnover; 4) bone formation rate by bone biopsy; and 5) muscle strength and balance to predict spine and non-spine fractures, identified by self-report and/or vertebral morphometry. All measurements will be obtained at baseline, at 12 and at 24 months with the exception of bone biopsy, which will be measured once at 12 months. Subjects will be contacted every 4 months to determine if there have been incident fractures or falls.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This study is one of the first that aims to identify risk factors for fracture in early stage CKD patients. Ultimately, by identifying risk factors for fracture and targeting treatments in this group-before the initiation of renal replacement therapy - we will reduce the burden of disease due to fractures among patients with CKD.</p
