A new calibration method for time delay standard and its application
A method which is used to measure time delay accurately by using a Type 900-LB slotted line is described. The accuracy for calibrating time delay of a precision coaxial air line Type 900-L is about + or - (0.4 to 0.6)ps, and for coaxial cables with VSWR less than 1.5 and time delay t less than 50ns is about + or - (3 to 5)ps. Theoretical analysis and mathematical derivation of microwave networks in cascade are given. Methods to eliminate the errors which are caused by the discontinuities and the error analysis of the measuring system are presented. Skin effect analysis of the transient characteristic of coaxial transmission line are discussed in detail. Methods to eliminate the errors which result from using the calibrated time delay standard to calibrate time interval measurement instruments are presented. The estimation of errors and formulae for correction of those errors are described
The In-Hospital Mortality Rates of Slaves and Freemen: Evidence from Touro Infirmary, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1855–1860
Using a rich sample of admission records from New Orleans Touro Infirmary, we examine the in-hospital mortality risk of free and enslaved patients. Despite a higher mortality rate in the general population, slaves were significantly less likely to die in the hospital than the whites. We analyze the determinants of in-hospital mortality at Touro using Oaxaca-type decomposition to aggregate our regression results. After controlling for differences in characteristics and maladies, we find that much of the mortality gap remains unexplained. A data collection scheme for identification of parameters in a driver model
A high gain steering controller to compensate for limitations in a handicapped driver's range of motion is employed when adapting vehicle to his use. A driver/vehicle system can become unstable as vehicle speed is increased, therefore it is desirable to use a computer simulation of the driver/vehicle combination as a design tool to investigate the system response prior to construction of a controller and road testing. Unknown driver parameters must be identified prior to use of the model for system analysis. A means to collect the data necessary for identification of these driver model parameters without extensive instrumentation of a vehicle to measure and record vehicle states is addressed. Initial tests of the procedure identified all of the driver parameters with errors of 6% or less
Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics Studies on Energetics and Kinetics for Electro-Active Polymers: PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE)
We use first principles methods to study static and dynamical mechanical
properties of the ferroelectric polymer Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and
its copolymer with trifluoro ethylene (TrFE). We use density functional theory
[within the generalized gradient approximation (DFT-GGA)] to calculate
structures and energetics for various crystalline phases for PVDF and
P(VDF-TrFE). We find that the lowest energy phase for PVDF is a non-polar
crystal with a combination of trans (T) and gauche (G) bonds; in the case of
the copolymer the role of the extra (bulkier) F atoms is to stabilize T bonds.
This leads to the higher crystallinity and piezoelectricity observed
experimentally. Using the MSXX first principles-based force field (FF) with
molecular dynamics (MD), we find that the energy barrier necessary to nucleate
a kink (gauche pairs separated by trans bonds) in an all-T crystal is much
lower (14.9 kcal/mol) in P(VDF-TrFE) copolymer than in PVDF (24.8 kcal/mol).
This correlates with the observation that the polar phase of the copolymer
exhibits a solid-solid a transition to a non-polar phase under heating while
PVDF directly melts. We also studied the mobility of an interface between a
polar and non-polar phases under uniaxial stress; we find a lower threshold
stress and a higher mobility in the copolymer as compared with PVDF. Finally,
considering plastic deformation under applied shear, we find that the chains
for P(VDF-TrFE) have a very low resistance to sliding, particularly along the
chain direction. The atomistic characterization of these "unit mechanisms"
provides essential input to mesoscopic or macroscopic models of electro-active
