Infrared spectra of some sulfides and their analogs of binary composition in the long-wave region

The far infrared spectra (500-60/cm) of some simple sulfides and their analogs were studied. In all, 22 minerals with different structure types were investigated, out of which 14 are sulfides (galena, alabandite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, wurtzite, cinnabar, realgar, orpiment, getchelite antimonite, molybdenite, pyrite, marcasite and heazlewoodite) 6 arsenides (niccolite, domeykite, arsenopyrite, lollingite, rammelsbergite and skutterudite), one telluride (tetradymite) and native arsenic. The main bands of infrared absorption spectra of the minerals are compared with the relative strength of the interatomic bonds and their interpretation is given

Towards the Strategy of Enhancing the Level of Linguistic Competence of Educational Institutions

AbstractThis paper is devoted to the problem of the role of linguistic competence of research and educational personnel of Russian universities. It is stated that inadequate level of the emphasized competence is one of the reasons, hindering the development of Russian higher education, which affects the positions of Russian universities in the world university rankings. The authors of the article address the experience of one of the leading Russian engineering universities – National research Tomsk polytechnic university (NRTPU) – on solution of this problem. The article provides main results of the project on enhancing the level of linguistic competence of the research and educational personnel of NRTPU and the analysis of the positive and negative sides of its realization

Some results of cislunar plasma research

The main results of plasma cislunar investigations, carried out during Luna-19 and Luna-22 spacecraft flights by means of dual frequency dispersion interferrometry, are briefly outlined. It is shown that a thin layer of plasma, with a height of several tens of kilometers and a maximum concentration of the order 1,000 electrons/cu cm exists above the solar illuminated lunar surface. A physical model of the formation and existence of such a plasma in cislunar space is proposed, taking into account the influence of local magnetic areas on the moon

The nighttime ionosphere of Mars from Mars-4 and Mars-5 radio occultation dual-frequency measurements

Dual frequency radio sounding of the Martian nighttime ionosphere was carried out during the exits from behind the planet of the Mars-4 spacecraft on February 2, 1974 and the Mars-5 spacecraft on February 18, 1974. In these experiments, the spacecraft transmitter emitted two coherent monochromatic signals in decimeter and centimeter wavelength ranges. At the Earth receiving station, the reduced phase difference (or frequencies) of these signals was measured. The nighttime ionosphere of Mars measured in both cases had a peak electron density of approximately 5 X 1,000/cu cm at an altitude of 110 to 130 km. At the times of spacecraft exit, the solar zenith angles at the point of occultation were 127 deg and 106 deg, respectively. The height profiles of electron concentration were obtained assuming spherical symmetry of the Martian ionosphere

Publication activity and its role in assessment of professional engagement of hei academic staff (Russian practices)

The aim of the research is to analyze and summarize the Russian best practices of using the publication activity as a criterion to assess the professional activity of the academic staff; to identify the role of motivational factors as a method to manage and control the publication activity of the academic staff. Methods. The authors address the methodology of comprehensive research based on the method of document analysis, comparative analysis, and method of secondary use of sociological and psychological data. Results and scientific novelty concludes in presenting Russian and international best practices generalized on using the publication activity to assess the engagement of HEI (Higher Educational Institution) academic staff; the most appropriate formats of using the publication activity as a criterion to assess the research component of the academic staff engagement are defined. Degree of reliability of this criterion is shown – its strengths and shortcomings. The conclusion is drawn on need of the essential changes in management of publication activity affecting both professional and motivational spheres of scientific and pedagogical staff. The most acceptable options of measurement of staff work efficiency of this category are formulated. Practical significance. The research outcomes can be the corpus for designing the assessment method for the professional engagement of the academic staffЦели описанного в статье исследования – проанализировать и обобщить российский опыт использования публикационной активности в качестве критерия оценки профессиональной деятельности научно-педагогических работников; выявить роль мотивационных факторов, влияющих на эту активность. Методы и методология. Авторами в ходе изучения заявленной темы применялась методология комплексного исследования, включающая методы анализа документов, сравнительного анализа, вторичного использования социологических и психологических данных. Результаты и научная новизна. Рассмотрена международная и отечественная практика применения количественных и качественных показателей деятельности научно-педагогических работников вузов. Вскрыты причины, почему публикационная активность становится одним из ключевых параметров оценки достижений конкретного ученого, организации, в которой ведется научная работа, и в целом научного сообщества того или иного государства. Показана степень надежности данного критерия – его достоинства и недостатки. Сделан вывод о необходимости существенных изменений в управлении публикационной активностью, затрагивающих как профессиональную, так и мотивационную сферу научно-педагогических работников. Сформулированы наиболее приемлемые варианты измерения эффективности труда специалистов этой категории. Практическая значимость. Evidence of orbital reconstruction at interfaces in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 films

Electronic properties of transition metal oxides at interfaces are influenced by strain, electric polarization and oxygen diffusion. Linear dichroism (LD) x-ray absorption, diffraction, transport and magnetization on thin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films, allow identification of a peculiar universal interface effect. We report the LD signature of preferential 3d-eg(3z2-r2) occupation at the interface, suppressing the double exchange mechanism. This surface orbital reconstruction is opposite of that favored by residual strain and independent of dipolar fields, chemical nature of the substrate and capping.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

Semi-Wild Population of Kulans in the Bukhara Breeding Centre and Their Co-Habitation with Przewalski’s Horses

Asiatic wild asses and Przewalski\u27s horses initially inhabited steppe, semi-desert and desert areas, but Przewalski\u27s horses became extinct in the wild, and kulans are under threat of disappearance. The Bukhara Breeding Centre (Uzbekistan) was created in 1976 for conservation and reintroduction of wild ungulate species. In 1977-1978, five kulans (two males and three females) from Barsa-Kelmes Island on the Aral lake were introduced to the reserve. The group increased to 25-30 animals in 1995-1998, when five Przewalski\u27s horses from Moscow and St. Petersburg zoos were introduced to the same territory. We analyzed the home ranges, preferred habitats and social interactions of these closely related species during 1995-1999 by season and group composition. Horses and kulans each formed a reproductive group and a secondary bachelor group. The home range of the secondary group in both species was larger then that of the reproductive group and seemed to be less dependent on watering places. Kulans and Przewalski\u27s horses demonstrated different strategies of habitat use. They can share one area without serious conflicts, avoiding competition by the temporal differentiation in the usage of key sites
