Background: Most females age 18–64 diagnosed with an early-stage breast tumor in Missouri, 2008–2015, were surgically treated with either total (simple) mastectomy (TM), modified radical mastectomy (MRM), or breast conserving surgery (BCS). Last year, the Missouri Cancer Registry examined demographic differences between females receiving these treatments and noted a slight decrease in the % of cases getting BCS since 2008 with an increase in TM (& TM+MRM). 2. Purpose: To continue monitoring trends in the surgical treatment of early-stage breast cancer in Missouri and describe the patterns by demographics & tumor characteristics

    We summarize some of the work done by the P3 subgroup on Alternative Models and New Ideas. The working group covered a broad range of topics including a constrained Standard Model from an extra dimension, a discussion of recent ideas addressing the strong CP problem, searches for doubly charged higgs bosons in e gamma collisions, and an update on discovery limits for extra neutral gauge bosons at hadron colliders.     Higgs as a pseudo-Goldstone boson, the mu problem and gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking

    We study the interplay between the spontaneous breaking of a global symmetry of the Higgs sector and gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, in the framework of a supersymmetric model with global SU(3) symmetry. In addition to solving the supersymmetric flavour problem and alleviating the little hierarchy problem, this scenario automatically triggers the breaking of the global symmetry and provides an elegant solution to the mu/Bmu problem of gauge mediation. We study in detail the processes of global symmetry and electroweak symmetry breaking, including the contributions of the top/stop and gauge-Higgs sectors to the one-loop effective potential of the pseudo-Goldstone Higgs boson. While the joint effect of supersymmetry and of the global symmetry allows in principle the electroweak symmetry to be broken with little fine-tuning, the simplest version of the model fails to bring the Higgs mass above the LEP bound due to a suppressed tree-level quartic coupling. To cure this problem, we consider the possibility of additional SU(3)-breaking contributions to the Higgs potential, which results in a moderate fine-tuning. The model predicts a rather low messenger scale, a small tan beta value, a light Higgs boson with Standard Model-like properties, and heavy higgsinos.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures.     SO(2N) and SU(N) gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions

    We perform an exploratory investigation of how rapidly the physics of SO(2N) gauge theories approaches its N=oo limit. This question has recently become topical because SO(2N) gauge theories are orbifold equivalent to SU(N) gauge theories, but do not have a finite chemical potential sign problem. We consider only the pure gauge theory and, because of the inconvenient location of the lattice strong-to-weak coupling 'bulk' transition in 3+1 dimensions, we largely confine our numerical calculations to 2+1 dimensions. We discuss analytic expectations in both D=2+1 and D=3+1, show that the SO(6) and SU(4) spectra do indeed appear to be the same, and show that a number of mass ratios do indeed appear to agree in the large-N limit. In particular SO(6) and SU(3) gauge theories are quite similar except for the values of the string tension and coupling, both of which differences can be readily understood.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figure

    Collective Quartics from Simple Groups

    This article classifies Little Higgs models that have collective quartic couplings. There are two classes of collective quartics: Special Cosets and Special Quartics. After taking into account dangerous singlets, the smallest Special Coset models are SU(5)/SO(5) and SU(6)/Sp(6). The smallest Special Quartic model is SU(5)/SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) and has not previously been considered as a candidate Little Higgs model.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figure

    Pseudo-axions in Little Higgs models

    Little Higgs models have an enlarged global symmetry which makes the Higgs boson a pseudo-Goldstone boson. This symmetry typically contains spontaneously broken U(1) subgroups which provide light electroweak-singlet pseudoscalars. Unless such particles are absorbed as the longitudinal component of Z′Z' states, they appear as pseudoscalars in the physical spectrum at the electroweak scale. We outline their significant impact on Little Higgs phenomenology and analyze a few possible signatures at the LHC and other future colliders in detail. In particular, their presence significantly affects the physics of the new heavy quark states predicted in Little Higgs models, and inclusive production at LHC may yield impressive diphoton resonances.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figs., accepted to PRD; footnote added, typos correcte

    A pragmatic study exploring the prevention of delirium among hospitalized older hip fracture patients: Applying evidence to routine clinical practice using clinical decision support

    Delirium occurs in up to 65% of older hip fracture patients. Developing delirium in hospital has been associated with a variety of adverse outcomes. Trials have shown that multi-component preventive interventions can lower delirium rates. The objective of this study was to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of an evidence-based electronic care pathway, which incorporates multi-component delirium strategies, among older hip fracture patients. We conducted a pragmatic study using an interrupted time series design in order to evaluate the use and impact of the intervention. The target population was all consenting patients aged 65 years or older admitted with an acute hip fracture to the orthopedic units at two Calgary, Alberta hospitals. The primary outcome was delirium rates. Secondary outcomes included length of hospital stay, in-hospital falls, in-hospital mortality, new discharges to long-term care, and readmissions. A Durbin Watson test was conducted to test for serial correlation and, because no correlation was found, Chi-square statistics, Wilcoxon test and logistic regression analyses were conducted as appropriate. At study completion, focus groups were conducted at each hospital to explore issues around the use of the order set. During the 40-week study period, 134 patients were enrolled. The intervention had no effect on the overall delirium rate (33% pre versus 31% post; p = 0.84). However, there was a significant interaction between study phase and hospital (p = 0.03). Although one hospital did not experience a decline in delirium rate, the delirium rate at the other hospital declined from 42% to 19% (p = 0.08). This difference by hospital was mirrored in focus group feedback. The hospital that experienced a decline in delirium rates was more supportive of the intervention. Overall, post-intervention there were no significant differences in mean length of stay (12 days post versus 14 days pre; p = 0.74), falls (6% post versus 10% pre; p = 0.43) or discharges to long-term care (6% post versus 13% pre; p = 0.20). Translation of evidence-based multi-component delirium prevention strategies into everyday clinical care, using the electronic medical record, was not found to be effective at decreasing delirium rates among hip facture patients

    Domain Wall Fermions and the Eta Invariant

    We extend work by Callan and Harvey and show how the phase of the chiral fermion determinant in four dimensions is reproduced by zeromodes bound to a domain wall in five dimensions. The analysis could shed light on the applicability of zeromode fermions and the vacuum overlap formulation of Narayanan and Neuberger for chiral gauge theories on the lattice.Comment: uuencoded file with 3 figures; uses macros harvmac, epsf.
