    Leeds and the Northern Arts Prize

    Purpose - This paper aims to look at the nature of the relationship between the marketing of the contemporary visual arts, cultural tourism and city and urban regeneration. This exploratory study of the marketing of the contemporary visual arts in Leeds has, as its background narrative, the emergence of BritArt. Design/methodology/approach - The growth of contemporary visual arts provides the context for a case study of the Northern Art Prize, which was first awarded in 2007. Findings - The study found a number of factors for success that can aid urban renewal and city regeneration. Private sector marketing expertise levered into the management of the project was one critical success factor. Another was that private sector funding freed up marketers and artists and allowed risk-taking. Participants highlighted a lack of vision for the contemporary visual arts in the city and region and a strong desire for new collaborative working and new governance structures for the delivery of arts marketing and cultural tourism. Originality/value - The Northern Art Prize offers much for the marketing of contemporary visual arts, cultural tourism, city branding and urban renewal. Investing in and marketing of the arts is argued to serve as a stimulus that can bring a range of benefits for the business and wider community. Marketing, especially arts marketing, can help deliver social, economic and urban regeneration

    Flow visualization in the Langley 0.3-meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel and preliminary plans for the National Transonic Facility

    Design problems associated with the integration of flow visualization in cryogenic facilities are discussed. The possible effects from the cryogenic environment (i.e., window distortion due to thermal contraction both in the mounts and in the window material itself and turbulence in the flow due to injected LN2) are examined. The flow visualization techniques studied are schlieren, shadowgraph, moire deflectometry, and holographic interferometry. The test beds for this work are a Langley in-house cryogenic test chamber and the 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel

    Space shuttle entry and landing navigation analysis

    A navigation system for the entry phase of a Space Shuttle mission which is an aided-inertial system which uses a Kalman filter to mix IMU data with data derived from external navigation aids is evaluated. A drag pseudo-measurement used during radio blackout is treated as an additional external aid. A comprehensive truth model with 101 states is formulated and used to generate detailed error budgets at several significant time points -- end-of-blackout, start of final approach, over runway threshold, and touchdown. Sensitivity curves illustrating the effect of variations in the size of individual error sources on navigation accuracy are presented. The sensitivity of the navigation system performance to filter modifications is analyzed. The projected overall performance is shown in the form of time histories of position and velocity error components. The detailed results are summarized and interpreted, and suggestions are made concerning possible software improvements

    Interconversion of Nonlocal Correlations

    In this paper we study the correlations that arise when two separated parties perform measurements on systems they hold locally. We restrict ourselves to those correlations with which arbitrarily fast transmission of information is impossible. These correlations are called nonsignaling. We allow the measurements to be chosen from sets of an arbitrary size, but promise that each measurement has only two possible outcomes. We find the structure of this convex set of nonsignaling correlations by characterizing its extreme points. Taking an information-theoretic view, we prove that all of these extreme correlations are interconvertible. This suggests that the simplest extremal nonlocal distribution (called a PR box) might be the basic unit of nonlocality. We also show that this unit of nonlocality is sufficient to simulate all quantum states when measured with two outcome measurements.Comment: 7 pages + appendix, single colum

    Benefits from clinicians and healthcare organisations engaging in research

    In Editor’s Choice, Godlee supports and re-emphasises the positive points about National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) clinical research networks that are made in Gulland’s article.1 2 We welcome this support for research networks and for the part they can play in a more fully integrated research and healthcare system. Research engagement by clinicians and healthcare organisations is widely held to improve health services performance. However, we found the issue to be complex in our review conducted for the NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research (HS&DR) Programme in 2012-13.3 Thirty three papers were included in the analysis, and 28 were positive about improved performance, although only seven identified improved outcomes rather than improved processes. Diverse mechanisms contributed to these improvements. In a subsequent article we consider more recent evidence,4 including that UK NHS trusts active in research have lower risk adjusted mortality for acute admissions.5 Increased attention to this issue covers not only clinician participation but also organisational developments in the NIHR and NHS, such as Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) and Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs).6 7 These seek to promote better integration of research and healthcare systems by strengthening research networks, developing research capacity, and ensuring that healthcare organisations (both providers and commissioners) see research as an integral component of their overall structure. Such initiatives need to be linked to further empirical analysis that considers not only the research engagement of all relevant actors but also the organisational determinants of the impact on practice of such engagement
