First-principles study on the intermediate compounds of LiBH
We report the results of the first-principles calculation on the intermediate
compounds of LiBH. The stability of LiBH and LiBH has been examined with the ultrasoft pseudopotential method based on
the density functional theory. Theoretical prediction has suggested that
monoclinic LiBH is the most stable among the candidate
materials. We propose the following hydriding/dehydriding process of LiBH
via this intermediate compound : LiBHLiBH LiH HLiH B H. The hydrogen content and enthalpy of the first
reaction are estimated to be 10 mass% and 56 kJ/mol H, respectively, and
those of the second reaction are 4 mass% and 125 kJ/mol H. They are in good
agreement with experimental results of the thermal desorption spectra of
LiBH. Our calculation has predicted that the bending modes for the
-phonon frequencies of monoclinic LiBH are lower than
that of LiBH, while stretching modes are higher. These results are very
useful for the experimental search and identification of possible intermediate
compounds.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR
Molecular Spiders in One Dimension
Molecular spiders are synthetic bio-molecular systems which have "legs" made
of short single-stranded segments of DNA. Spiders move on a surface covered
with single-stranded DNA segments complementary to legs. Different mappings are
established between various models of spiders and simple exclusion processes.
For spiders with simple gait and varying number of legs we compute the
diffusion coefficient; when the hopping is biased we also compute their
velocity.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure
SEVERE OSTEOPOROSIS DUE TO SYSTEMIC MAST CELL DISEASE: SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT WITH INTERFERON ALPHA-2B
We describe a 33-yr-old man suffering from severe vertebral osteoporosis and urticaria pigmentosa due to systemic mast cell disease (SMCD). Because i.v. clodronate therapy could not prevent further vertebral fractures, an additional treatment with interferon alpha-2b was initiated. During 24 months of treatment, our patient had no further pain episodes, no new vertebral fractures were discovered, trabecular bone mineral density (BMD) increased significantly and urticarial symptoms improved. Nevertheless, the extent of skin lesions remained unchanged. On histological examination, a remarkable decrease of mast cells was observed in the bone marrow, but not in the skin. Five months after discontinuation of interferon alpha-2b, trabecular BMD decreased and urticarial symptoms deteriorated. These findings illustrate a beneficial effect of interferon alpha-2b on SMCD-induced osteoporosis as well as urticarial symptoms, and raise the question whether this treatment may have a diverse impact on mast cell populations in different tissue
Photo-fragmentation spectroscopy of benzylium and 1-phenylethyl cations
The electronic spectra of cold benzylium (C6H5-CH2+) and 1-phenylethyl
(C6H5-CH-CH3+)cations have been recorded via photofragment spectroscopy.
Benzylium and 1-phenylethyl cations produced from electrosprayed benzylamine
and phenylethylamine solutions, respectively, were stored in a cryogenically
cooled quadrupole ion trap and photodissociated by an OPO laser, scanned in
parts of the UV and visible regions (600-225 nm). The electronic states and
active vibrational modes of the benzylium and 1-phenylethyl cations as well as
those of their tropylium or methyl tropylium isomers have been calculated with
ab initio methods for comparison with the spectra observed. Sharp vibrational
progressions are observed in the visible region while the absorption features
are much broader in the UV. The visible spectrum of the benzylium cation is
similar to that obtained in an argon tagging experiment [V. Dryza, N. Chalyavi,
J.A. Sanelli, and E.J. Bieske, J. Chem. Phys. 137, 204304 (2012)], with an
additional splitting assigned to Fermi resonances. The visible spectrum of the
1-phenylethyl cation also shows vibrational progressions. For both cations, the
second electronic transition is observed in the UV, around 33 000 cm-1 (4.1
eV), and shows a broadened vibrational progression. In both cases the S2
optimized geometry is non planar. The third electronic transition observed
around 40 000 cm-1 (5.0 eV) is even broader with no apparent vibrational
structures, which is indicative of either a fast non-radiative process or a
very large change in geometry between the excited and the ground states. The
oscillator strengths calculated for tropylium and methyl tropylium are weak.
Therefore, these isomeric structures are most likely not responsible for these
absorption features. Finally, the fragmentation pattern changes in the second
and third electronic states: C2H2 loss becomes predominant at higher excitation
energies, for both cations
2,6-Dichloro-3-nitropyridine
The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C5H2Cl2N2O2, consists of two crystallographically independent molecules. The pyridine ring in each molecule is essentially planar, with maximum deviations of 0.004 (4) and 0.007 (4) Å. Short Cl⋯O [3.09 (3) and 3.13 (4) Å] and Cl⋯Cl [3.38 (12) Å] contacts were observed. No significant intermolecular interactions were observed in the crystal packing
Duodenal perforation due to a kink in a nasojejunal feeding tube in a patient with severe acute pancreatitis: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

Nasojejunal feeding tube placement can be achieved by fluoroscopic or endoscopic techniques. Significant complications due to nasojejunal feeding tube placement, such as hydrothorax, duodenal perforation and retroperitoneal emphysema, are very rare. We present a case of massive retroperitoneal emphysema and abscess because of duodenal perforation caused by a kink in a nasojejunal feeding tube.

Case presentation

A 34-year-old Chinese woman was admitted to our intensive care unit due to hypertriglyceridemia and severe acute pancreatitis. As she suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome and required mechanical ventilation, a nasojejunal feeding tube was placed by transnasal endoscopic technique. The procedure took place at her bedside. Half a month later, she had a high fever and abdominal distension. An abdominal radiography was performed and showed that the nasojejunal feeding tube was kinking on the third portion of the duodenum and the tip of the nasojejunal feeding tube was inserted into the right retroperitoneum on the second portion of the duodenum.

Conclusion

When a nasojejunal feeding tube is placed through the transnasal endoscopic technique, an abdominal radiography should be used to confirm the tube's position and indicate if it is kinking or beyond the ligament of Treitz.</p
Liquid methanol Monte Carlo simulations with a refined potential which includes polarizability, nonadditivity, and intramolecular relaxation
Monte Carlo simulations of liquid methanol were performed using a refined ab initio derived potential which includes polarizability, nonadditivity, and intramolecular relaxation. The results present good agreement between the energetic and structural properties predicted by the model and those predicted by ab initio calculations of methanol clusters and experimental values of gas and condensed phases. The molecular level picture of methanol shows the existence of both rings and linear polymers in the methanol liquid phase
