Hypertemporal Imaging of NYC Grid Dynamics
Hypertemporal visible imaging of an urban lightscape can reveal the phase of
the electrical grid granular to individual housing units. In contrast to
in-situ monitoring or metering, this method offers broad, persistent,
real-time, and non-permissive coverage through a single camera sited at an
urban vantage point. Rapid changes in the phase of individual housing units
signal changes in load (e.g., appliances turning on and off), while slower
building- or neighborhood-level changes can indicate the health of distribution
transformers. We demonstrate the concept by observing the 120 Hz flicker of
lights across a NYC skyline. A liquid crystal shutter driven at 119.75 Hz
down-converts the flicker to 0.25 Hz, which is imaged at a 4 Hz cadence by an
inexpensive CCD camera; the grid phase of each source is determined by analysis
of its sinusoidal light curve over an imaging "burst" of some 25 seconds.
Analysis of bursts taken at ~15 minute cadence over several hours demonstrates
both the stability and variation of phases of halogen, incandescent, and some
fluorescent lights. Correlation of such results with ground-truth data will
validate a method that could be applied to better monitor electricity
consumption and distribution in both developed and developing cities.Comment: This paper uses astronomical techniques applied to the study of urban

Competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity, electron-hole doping asymmetry and "Fermi Surface" topology in cuprates
We investigate the asymmetry between electron and hole doping in a 2D Mott
insulator, and the resulting competition between antiferromagnetism (AF) and
d-wave superconductivity (SC), using variational Monte Carlo for projected wave
functions. We find that key features of the T = 0 phase diagram, such as
critical doping for SC-AF coexistence and the maximum value of the SC order
parameter, are determined by a single parameter which characterises the
topology of the "Fermi surface" at half filling defined by the bare
tight-binding parameters. Our results give insight into why AF wins for
electron doping, while SC is dominant on the hole doped side. We also suggest
using band structure engineering to control the parameter for enhancing SC.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Uncovering Droop Control Laws Embedded Within the Nonlinear Dynamics of Van der Pol Oscillators
This paper examines the dynamics of power-electronic inverters in islanded
microgrids that are controlled to emulate the dynamics of Van der Pol
oscillators. The general strategy of controlling inverters to emulate the
behavior of nonlinear oscillators presents a compelling time-domain alternative
to ubiquitous droop control methods which presume the existence of a
quasi-stationary sinusoidal steady state and operate on phasor quantities. We
present two main results in this work. First, by leveraging the method of
periodic averaging, we demonstrate that droop laws are intrinsically embedded
within a slower time scale in the nonlinear dynamics of Van der Pol
oscillators. Second, we establish the global convergence of amplitude and phase
dynamics in a resistive network interconnecting inverters controlled as Van der
Pol oscillators. Furthermore, under a set of non-restrictive decoupling
approximations, we derive sufficient conditions for local exponential stability
of desirable equilibria of the linearized amplitude and phase dynamics
Verification and Validation of Semantic Annotations
In this paper, we propose a framework to perform verification and validation
of semantically annotated data. The annotations, extracted from websites, are
verified against the schema.org vocabulary and Domain Specifications to ensure
the syntactic correctness and completeness of the annotations. The Domain
Specifications allow checking the compliance of annotations against
corresponding domain-specific constraints. The validation mechanism will detect
errors and inconsistencies between the content of the analyzed schema.org

Gamma-Ray Bursts Trace UV Metrics of Star Formation over 3 < z < 5
We present the first uniform treatment of long duration gamma-ray burst (GRB)
host galaxy detections and upper limits over the redshift range 3<z<5, a key
epoch for observational and theoretical efforts to understand the processes,
environments, and consequences of early cosmic star formation. We contribute
deep imaging observations of 13 GRB positions yielding the discovery of eight
new host galaxies. We use this dataset in tandem with previously published
observations of 31 further GRB positions to estimate or constrain the host
galaxy rest-frame ultraviolet (UV; 1600 A) absolute magnitudes M_UV. We then
use the combined set of 44 M_UV estimates and limits to construct the M_UV
luminosity function (LF) for GRB host galaxies over 3<z<5 and compare it to
expectations from Lyman break galaxy (LBG) photometric surveys with the Hubble
Space Telescope. Adopting standard prescriptions for the luminosity dependence
of galaxy dust obscuration (and hence, total star formation rate), we find that
our LF is compatible with LBG observations over a factor of 600x in host
luminosity, from M_UV = -22.5 mag to >-15.6 mag, and with extrapolations of the
assumed Schechter-type LF well beyond this range. We review proposed
astrophysical and observational biases for our sample, and find they are for
the most part minimal. We therefore conclude, as the simplest interpretation of
our results, that GRBs successfully trace UV metrics of cosmic star formation
over the range 3<z<5. Our findings suggest GRBs are providing an accurate
