    State of Alaska Election Security Project Phase 2 Report

    A laska’s election system is among the most secure in the country, and it has a number of safeguards other states are now adopting. But the technology Alaska uses to record and count votes could be improved— and the state’s huge size, limited road system, and scattered communities also create special challenges for insuring the integrity of the vote. In this second phase of an ongoing study of Alaska’s election security, we recommend ways of strengthening the system—not only the technology but also the election procedures.     WeakSATD: Detecting Weak Self-admitted Technical Debt

    Speeding up development may produce technical debt, i.e., not-quite-right code for which the effort to make it right increases with time as a sort of interest. Developers may be aware of the debt as they admit it in their code comments. Literature reports that such a self-admitted technical debt survives for a long time in a program, but it is not yet clear its impact on the quality of the code in the long term. We argue that self-admitted technical debt contains a number of different weaknesses that may affect the security of a program. Therefore, the longer a debt is not paid back the higher is the risk that the weaknesses can be exploited. To discuss our claim and rise the developers' awareness of the vulnerability of the self-admitted technical debt that is not paid back, we explore the self-admitted technical debt in the Chromium C-code to detect any known weaknesses. In this preliminary study, we first mine the Common Weakness Enumeration repository to define heuristics for the automatic detection and fix of weak code. Then, we parse the C-code to find self-admitted technical debt and the code block it refers to. Finally, we use the heuristics to find weak code snippets associated to self-admitted technical debt and recommend their potential mitigation to developers. Such knowledge can be used to prioritize self-admitted technical debt for repair. A prototype has been developed and applied to the Chromium code. Initial findings report that 55% of self-admitted technical debt code contains weak code of 14 different types

    Correlated responses to recurrent selection for grain yield in maize

    Experiments were conducted in three field environments with the following objectives: (1) to evaluate the progress from seven cycles of reciprocal recurrent selection in Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic (BSSS(R)] and Iowa Corn Borer Synthetic #1 (BSCBl(R)] and six cycles of half-sib family selection in \u27Alph\u27 (i.e., BS12) maize (Zea mays L.) populations, (2) to compare the response of unimproved and improved maize variety hybrids to different levels of nitrogen fertilizer and plant density, and (3) to evaluate the influence of nitrogen and plant density on the morphological and physiological traits associated with recurrent selection for grain yield in maize. Each experiment was grown in randomized complete blocks with a split-split-plot arrangement and two replications. Nitrogen fertilizer levels (0, 90, 180, and 270 kg N/ha) were main plots, plant densities (39,500; 59,300; 79,000; and 98,800 plants/ha) were subplots, and five variety hybrids, BSSS(R)CO x BSCBl(R)CO, BSSS(R)C5 x BSCB1(R)C5, BSSS(R)C7 x BSCB1(R)C7, BS12CO x B14A, and BS12C6 x B14A, were randomized as sub-subplots.     Analytical expression of the magneto-optical Kerr effect and Brillouin light scattering intensity arising from dynamic magnetization

    Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy are important techniques for the investigation of magnetization dynamics. Within this article, we calculate analytically the MOKE and BLS signals from prototypical spin-wave modes in the ferromagnetic layer. The reliability of the analytical expressions is confirmed by optically exact numerical calculations. Finally, we discuss the dependence of the MOKE and BLS signals on the ferromagnetic layer thickness

    Infrasound Detection of Approaching Lahars

    Infrasound may be used to detect the approach of hazardous volcanic mudflows, known as lahars, tens of minutes before their flow fronts arrive. We have analyzed signals from more than 20 secondary lahars caused by precipitation events at Fuego Volcano during Guatemala’s rainy season in May through October of 2022. We are able to quantify the capabilities of infrasound monitoring through comparison with seismic data, time lapse camera imagery, and high-resolution video of a well-recorded event on August 17. We determine that infrasound sensors, deployed adjacent to the lahar path and in small-aperture (10 s of meters) arrays, are particularly sensitive to remote detection of lahars, including small-sized events, at distances of at least 5 km. At Fuego Volcano these detections could be used to provide timely alerts of up to 30 min before lahars arrive at a downstream monitoring site, such as in the frequently impacted Ceniza drainage. We propose that continuous infrasound monitoring, from locations adjacent to a drainage, may complement seismic monitoring and serve as a valuable tool to help identify approaching hazards. On the other hand, infrasound arrays located a kilometer or more from the lahar path can be effectively used to track a lahar’s progression

    Brillouin light scattering study of Co2_{2}Cr0.6_{0.6}Fe0.4_{0.4}Al and Co2_{2}FeAl Heusler compounds

    The thermal magnonic spectra of Co2_{2}Cr0.6_{0.6}Fe0.4_{0.4}Al (CCFA) and Co2_2FeAl were investigated using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy (BLS). For CCFA, the exchange constant A (exchange stiffness D) is found to be 0.48 μ\muerg/cm (203 meV A2^2), while for Co2_2FeAl the corresponding values of 1.55 μ\muerg/cm (370 meV A2^2) were found. The observed asymmetry in the BLS spectra between the Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies was assigned to an interplay between the asymmetrical profiles of hybridized Damon-Esbach and perpendicular standing spin-wave modes, combined with the optical sensitivity of the BLS signal to the upper side of the CCFA or Co2_2FeAl film

    Immunohistochemical localization patterns for vimentin and other intermediate filaments in calcified ovarian fibrothecoma

    PROBLEM: To describe immunohistochemical features encountered in ovarian fibrothecoma with correlation to clinical presentation and surgical management. METHOD OF STUDY: A female age 75 presented for evaluation of melena. The patient reported total abdominal hysterectomy and removal of both ovaries 40 years earlier. RESULTS: CA-125 was normal and there was no evidence of hyperestrogen effect. Pelvic CT revealed a partially calcified 7 cm pelvic mass without adenopathy or ascites; ultrasound was confirmatory. Endoscopy identified three benign intestinal tubular adenomas. Following laparoscopic excision of the pelvic tumor immunohistochemichal analysis of the mass showed negative staining for keratin, S100 protein, inhibin, calretinin, melan A, smooth muscle actin, CD34, CD117, and desmin. The tissue was positive for vimentin, however. CONCLUSION: Ovarian fibrothecomas represent an ovarian stromal neoplasm developing in a wide spectrum of clinical settings. Particularly if oophorectomy is stated to have been performed remote from the time of index presentation, the status of the ovaries must be considered whenever pelvic pathology is encountered.     UAV-Based Quantification of Dynamic Lahar Channel Morphology at Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala

    This study quantified erosional and depositional processes for secondary lahars in Las Lajas drainage at Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala, during the rainy season from May to October 2021. Abundant pyroclastic material from ongoing eruptive activity is remobilized seasonally during heavy precipitation, which can impact infrastructure and populations living near Fuego. Our region of focus was in an agricultural zone 6 to 10 km from the summit, surveyed with an unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV) quadcopter at monthly intervals. Imagery was processed into overlapping time-lapse structure from motion digital elevation models (DEMs). DEMs were differenced to find volumetric changes as a function of the channel flow path distance (quantified in 500 m sections) to track channel morphology changes over time. The largest measured volume changes were a 490 m3/day loss in the upper section (~6 km from summit) and a 440 m3/day gain in the lower sections (~10 km from summit). We discussed how the natural channel’s constriction and widening of Las Lajas in more distal sections control the behavior and stability of the stream evolution. Above the constriction, the channel is primarily downcutting and meandering within an old flood plain, which had been filled in by pyroclastic materials deposited by the June 2018 paroxysm
